About this file

This Request for Information (RFI) focuses on a shot peening machine operation for C-5 aircraft main landing gear (MLG) trunnions. The RFI explores technical details of the peening process, including confirmation that the operation will target the inside diameter of the trunnion using a rotating lance device. Key technical aspects include manual media coverage, variable bore length and travel requirements (ranging from 5 to 9 feet vertically), and process verification with an enclosed setup.

The related federal contract opportunity is a pre-solicitation for the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command at Robins AFB, Georgia. The anticipated solicitation (L5WA6) seeks a shotpeen machine for the 402d Aircraft Maintenance Group, structured as a total small business set-aside. The government plans to award a one-time, firm-fixed price definitive contract, with solicitation expected on or around 30 June 2025. No foreign companies will be permitted to participate, and the contract will cover tools, parts, materials, equipment, labor, transportation, and training for the new shotpeen machine.

Text version

RFI’s The maneuverability seems to imply that the peening operation will take place while the MLG trunnion is still attached to the aircraft. Yes, Correct The process will target a repair to only the inside diameter of the trunnion using a rotating lance device. Yes, Correct The operator will manually drape the area to control the ricochet of the peening media. Not done currently Is the trunnion bore perfectly parallel to the ground when peened (that is, the horizontal motion of the rotating peening lance won’t require tilting of the lance and coordinated motion between the vertical and horizontal axes to follow the angle of the bore)? Not needed Will the operator broom up and dispose of the peening media after the operation? No How long is the bore; what is the estimated length of horizontal travel required? It varies What is the estimated vertical travel required (9’-6’)? It varies, start at 5ft and goes up to 9ft.

How will the fake trunnion be held for process verification? shall include enclosure.
