AFRL Cavity Measurements
1.0 Background
Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport (NUWCDIVNPT), Code 85 is being funded by the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) to execute a 6.1 basic research project investigating the physics of high-speed water entry. One sub-task of this effort involves measurement of the cavity physics of canonical body water entry. The prospective Contractor must possess unique subject matter expertise (SME) and facilities to perform such cavity physics experimental measurements. Subject matter expertise must be demonstrated through a historical record of peer-reviewed journal articles on the topics of water entry and cavitation.
1.1 Places of Performance
The experimental apparatus will be designed and fabricated at the Contractor’s Facility and
NUWC Division Newport, Newport, RI. The Government estimates one trip to Newport, RI will be required for testing.
1.2 Authorized Users
Code 85
1.3 Sponsors
Air Force Research Lab.
1.4 Types of Funding
Research Development Test and Evaluation (RDT&E)
2.0 Scope
The Contractor will design, fabricate, and deliver a custom apparatus for performing cavity pressure measurements in the wake of a spherical body entering the water in atmospheric and reduced ambient pressure conditions. The Contractor will use said apparatus to perform measurements under a range of input parameters.
3.0 RESERVED
4.0 Technical Requirements
4.1 Experimental apparatus design & fabrication
The contractor shall:
4.1.1 Propose an experimental apparatus design schematic to perform cavity pressure measurements in the wake of a spherical body entering the water. The design shall include an instrumentation parts list. The experimental apparatus will be delivered to
Newport, RI 02841 upon completion.
Deliverable: CDRL A001 – Presentation Material - Experimental Design Review.
4.1.2 Fabricate and/or assemble the experimental apparatus and demonstrate functionality with preliminary water entry testing under conditions to be chosen by the contractor. The water entry test conditions shall have a sphere impact speed of at least U = 20 m/s.
Deliverable: CDRL A002 – Test Report - Preliminary Data and Technical Brief.
4.2 Generation of experimental data set
The contractor shall:
4.2.1 Propose an experimental test matrix with variations in sphere radius and impact speed.
Matrix shall include any raw high speed video, hydrophone and pressure sensor data. The test matrix is subject to approval by NUWC prior to execution of testing.
Deliverable: CDRL A003 – Technical Report – Raw Data.
4.2.2 Perform experiments in accordance with the conditions in the approved test matrix.
Experimental data to be collected shall include pressure measurements in the cavity formed in the wake of spheres entering the water, and high speed imaging of the same.
Deliverable: CDRL A004 – Test Report
5.0 Progress Reports
The Contractor shall communicate progress to the Government in the form of phone conversations, e-mails, and test reports.
5.1 Bi-weekly progress update
The Contractor and NUWC shall discuss progress on a bi-weekly basis.
