DESIRED SPECIFICATIONS

Illumination system must include ultraviolet (UV) & visible (Vis) light sources for visualizing crystal samples. Light Sources may be lamps, lasers, or LEDs (but the possibility of light source power and exposure time leading to degradation of crystals will be taken into consideration (see below)). It is preferred that light is delivered to microscope stage in facile manner such as with fiber optics. Optical system should have narrow-bandpass filter around 280 nm for tryptophan excitation and broad bandpass filters at 350 nm and above for tryptophan emission.

Magnification of microscope should be a minimum of 5X, with the option for higher magnification(s) preferred.

Camera port for taking electronic images for publication should be part of the microscope system.

System should be benchtop (no more than 3 feet in width, depth, & height).

Any software necessary for running the Fluorescent Microscope System should be included. Software which controls light source parameters (such as exposure time) will be viewed more favorably.
