3.5 Installation preparation. Prior to lead ingot reinstallation, that Contractor shall do the following:

3.5.1 Containment boxes.

3.5.1.1 Containment box structure. Using material conforming to ASTM A36, the Contractor shall fabricate as many ballast containment boxes as necessary to contain the amount of ballast ingots between the existing longitudinal and transverse structures. Use 10 Gauge ASTM A36 steel to fabricate the

21 (Rev-0) containment boxes. Weld all box side and bottom seams. The top edge of the each box side shall end a right angle, forming at least one inch of material to support box lid and gasket material.

NOTE

10 gauge A1011 (sheet steel), SS-36, Type 2, is an acceptable substitute for ASTM A36 steel.

3.5.1.2 Containment box preservation. The Contractor shall prepare and coat all internal and external surfaces of each containment box, using the system specified for “Bilges, Cofferdams, and Forepeaks, Steel” in SFLC Std Spec 6310, Appendix B (Cutter and Boat Interior Painting Systems). Select finish/top coat color to match existing adjacent surfaces.

3.5.1.3 Containment box lining. After containment box preservation, line all containment boxes with one layer of 1/8-inch thick rubber conforming to MIL-PRF-1149. Secure the rubber lining to sides and bottom of box using adhesive conforming to MIL-A-24456. After satisfactory inspection by Coast Guard Inspector and completion of placing lead ingots within the box, place one layer of 1/8-inch thick rubber conforming to MIL-PRF-1149 over the top of the lead ingots before box closure.

3.5.1.4 Containment box closure. The Contractor shall install at least two hasp closures (one on each end of the box). The Contractor shall align and mount hasp closures to the box structure when no gasket is present between the lid and the right angle supports in order to facilitate a tight seal of the box upon closure. After satisfactory inspection by Coast Guard Inspector and completion of placing lead ingots within the box, close the box using new gasket material conforming to ASTM D1330 (Grade II) between the lid and right angle supports. Secure hasp closures with tightly fitting cotter pin.

NOTES

1. The containment boxes shall be independent from hull structure in their entirety.

2. The final height of containment boxes shall not exceed the transverse or longitudinal framing height, whichever is less, nor impede the reinstallation of deck plates.

3. The containment box lid shall not be welded on.

22 (Rev-0)

WARNING!

Under no circumstances shall there be any welding to the shell plating or adjacent hull structure.

3.5.2 Rubber lining. Prior to placing the containment boxes between vessel structure, line all adjacent bulkheads, structural members and hull plating in contact with the containment boxes with one layer of 1/8-inch thick rubber conforming to MIL-PRF-1149. Secure the rubber lining using adhesive conforming to MIL-A-24456.

3.5.3 Cleaning. Clean the ingots free of adhering foreign matter before placing them in the containment boxes. Clean all limber/drain holes in the transverse and longitudinal structure in way of the ballast containment box installation to insure that water does not collect around the ballast containment boxes.

3.6 Ballast reinstallation. That Contractor shall place and evenly distribute the containment boxes between the longitudinal and transverse structure in the areas designated. The Contractor shall evenly distribute the ballast in each containment box. Install and tightly place the lead ingots in the containment boxes with the long axis of the ingots laid fore and aft in order to obtain maximum density and impair shifting while the ship rolls and pitches.

NOTES

1. Ballast ingots shall be cut as necessary to enable placement.

2. The final stack height of the ingots shall not impede closure of the containment boxes.

3. Due to the added weight of the containment boxes, slightly fewer lead ingots may need to be reinstalled to achieve the estimated full load of the vessel with the ballast installed (see paragraph 4.1 (Approximate final full load condition of cutter)).

4. The Contractor shall not place the ballast containment boxes in way of any limber/drain holes or anyplace that would create interference or impairment to the inspection and maintenance of shipboard systems.

3.7 Deck plate reinstallation. After completion of the ballast containment box installation, the Contractor shall reinstall the retained deck plating over each containment box, using NAVSEA Drawing 804- 1340709 as guidance.
