About this file

This is a herbicide standards document related to Forest Stand Improvement Services at the Atlanta Conservation Area in Macon County, Missouri, administered by the Missouri Department of Conservation. The document establishes chemical application requirements and standards for contractors performing vegetation management on approximately 95 acres across four timber stands. Any contractor utilizing chemical treatments on Department property must possess a valid Missouri commercial pesticide applicator's license prior to commencing work. The Department requires contractors to provide documentation demonstrating compliance with licensing requirements upon request.

The herbicide standards document serves as a technical specification guide ensuring that all chemical applications meet state regulatory requirements and environmental protection standards. Contractors must adhere to these standards when selecting herbicides, application methods, and safety protocols for the forest management project. The standards ensure consistency with Missouri Department of Conservation policies and state pesticide application regulations, protecting both the forest ecosystem and surrounding areas from improper chemical use.

HERBICIDE STANDARDS

The contractor must abide by rules and regulations set forth in the Missouri Pesticide Use Act. The Contractor must show proof of being a Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicator in the state of Missouri.

All herbicide application methods including solution ingredients and measurements must be consistent with the label for the chosen herbicide. All herbicide applications requiring cutting must be made in 15 minutes of cutting the stem. Application of herbicides to non-target species or areas is prohibited.

A noticeable dye must be mixed into the herbicide solution to allow for spot checking by the Missouri Department of Conservation. A department representative will periodically inspect work performed to ensure that all treatments have been conducted according to the standards set forth in this contract.

Use of herbicides is required on the following selected tree species: all cut trees except eastern red cedar.

The following application methods and standards are to be used under this contract (check all that apply):

Cut Stump Treatment – for tree stumps of any size, apply with a spray nozzle or squirt bottle directly to the cambium layer of the exposed stem. It is not necessary to apply to the center or heartwood of the stump. Year round application is suitable except during periods of sap flow for the target species.

Acceptable Herbicides: triclopyr ester, triclopyr amine, imazapyr, imazapyr & glyphosate solution, picloram & 2,4-D solution, glyphosate

Cut Stump with Basal Bark Treatment – for tree stumps of any size, apply with a low pressure sprayer using a solid cone or flat fan nozzle. Apply to the root collar area, sides of the stump, and the outer portion of the cut surface including the cambium. Cover all areas until completely wet but without causing runoff. The use of a flow rate regulator is required to ensure adequate and consistent coverage.

Your round application is suitable except for when snow or water prevents application on the bottom of the stem.

Acceptable Herbicides: triclopyr ester, imazapyr & glyphosate solution

Girdle (Frill) Treatment – for stems of any size, use chainsaw or similar cutting tool to make cuts into the stem of the tree at a convenient height completely encircling the trunk. The cutting depth should expose the cambium portion of the stem so that the herbicide will be readily absorbed. Apply the herbicide to the cut girdle. See chose herbicide label for directions on amount of herbicide to apply to girdle as they can vary by product. Application is year round except during periods of sap flow for the target species.

Acceptable Herbicides: triclopyr amine, imazapyr, picloram & 2,4-D solution, 2,4-D ester, glyphosate

Hack n’ Squirt Treatment – for stems of any size, use hatchet or similar cutting tool to make cuts into the stem of the tree at a convenient height around the trunk. The cutting depth should expose the cambium portion of the stem so that the herbicide will be readily absorbed. Apply the herbicide to the cuts. The use of a metered or calibrated applicator is recommended to ensure proper application rate.

See chosen herbicide label for directions on number of cuts and proper spacing as they can vary by product. Application is year round except during periods of sap flow for the target species.

Acceptable Herbicides: triclopyr amine, imazapyr, dicamba, diglycolamine salt of dicamba
