In order to be considered an “equal” solution, any alternative solution proposed must be able to perform in strict accordance with the salient operational and technical features described below.
Part 2 – Supplies or services and Prices/Costs
The Food & Drug Administration, Denver Laboratory performs microbiological assays whereby the potency or concentration of a chemical substance may be determined by its effect on the growth of a microorganism. That effect may be to promote the growth of the microorganism by substances such as certain vitamins and amino acids, or to inhibit growth in the case of antibiotics. Evidence of the importance of microbiological assays in the quality control of antibiotics is borne out by the existence today of 40 or more international reference preparations for antibiotics. The specific work that Denver Laboratory performs is focused on two major practical techniques. The agar diffusion assay and the tube assay. In the turbidimetric tube assay the extent of growth of an organism in a liquid nutrient medium is dependent on the quantity of active substance that is added to and mixed uniformly with the liquid medium. Growth of the organism is measured in terms of turbidity with a spectrophotometer. Total growth of the organism is reduced to an extent dependent on the concentration of the growth-inhibiting substance. A comparison between the reductions in growth in a standard and sample series of tubes is the basis of the estimation of potency. The option year warranties will begin after the one year manufacture warranty has expired.
