About this file
This memorandum provides questions and answers regarding Solicitation Number FA9101-20-Q-2019 for traveling wave tube amplifiers. The solicitation seeks X-band amplifiers with waveguide outputs and Ku-band amplifiers with waveguide outputs from vendors. Questions were due by September 18, 2020 and offers must be submitted by September 23, 2020 to be reviewed. The procurement must be awarded by September 30, 2020 to meet fiscal year end timelines. Specifications in the solicitation relate to pulse widths, pulse delays, pulse recovery times, and input signal jitter requirements. Prime power is specified as 208VAC three phase 60Hz and the neutral conductor will be provided.

MEMORANDUM FOR WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
SUBJECT: FA9101-20-Q-2019, Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers, Questions and Answers
1. Spec S-007, Pulse width range (ns) 50 – 50,000: Can the RF pulse be “nested” within the
TWT beam modulation (gating) pulse signal so that the beam is switched on a prescribed time before the RF pulse and off after the RF pulse ends to ensure pulse quality at the minimum pulse width?
Correct
2. Spec S-013, RF In to Out Max Pulse Delay (ns) 500: Can you confirm that this is the maximum transition time of an RF input pulse through the amplifier when the amplifier is switched on and the TWT beam is enabled?
This specification is the max time between TX bracket (otherwise known as
“gating pulse signal”) being applied to the TWT and the TWT being capable of amplifying a RF pulse without pulse shape deformation.
3. Spec S-016, RF Pulse to Pulse Recovery Time (ns) 150: Can you confirm that this is the minimum time between RF pulses when the amplifier is switched on and the TWT beam is enabled?
Correct.
4. Spec S-021, Tx Bkt Max Pulse to Pulse Jitter (ns) +/-5: Can you confirm that this is the input signal jitter and therefore not an amplifier requirement?
Correct.
5. Spec S-022, Tx Bkt Max Pulse Width Jitter (ns) +/-5: Can you confirm that this is the input signal jitter and therefore not an amplifier requirement?
Correct.
6. Spec S-032, Prime Power: 208 VAC, 3 Ph, 60 Hz: Can you confirm that 208VAC is the line to line voltage and the neutral conductor will also be available?
Correct.
7. Spec S-027, X and Ku Band, RF High Power Output Connector SC – F: This connector is not recommended for X and Ku-bands due to the high losses at these frequencies; is a waveguide output acceptable?
X should have a waveguide connector (WR-90) as the RF output port.
Ku should have a waveguide connector (WR-62) as the RF output port.
The RF inputs should be precision N Female connectors.
The requirements have been updated to reflect all changes, as required.
