About this file
This document is a Single Source Justification (Simplified Acquisition) for the procurement of RuOx thermometers from Lake Shore Cryotronics. The thermometers are essential for the government's requirements, as they provide the lowest available temperature calibration of 10 mK and a wide calibration range up to 40 K, which is critical for the accuracy of the customer's quantum device measurements. Market research determined that the Lake Shore RuOx thermometers have superior specifications that cannot be matched by competing products from other vendors. Given that Lake Shore does not have a network of authorized resellers, the government has determined that Lake Shore is the only source that can meet this requirement. The related federal contract opportunity is for Cryotronics Hardware, awarded to Lake Shore Cryotronics, Inc. on June 10, 2024 for $15,786.00 by the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Research Laboratory.

The products to be acquired are essential to the Government's requirements and other companies' products do not meet, or cannot be modified to meet the Government's needs.
RuOx thermometers are commonly used within DRs to learn more about the instantaneous temperature of quantum devices. These temperature sensors consist of highly sensitive resistors, where the resistance depends on temperature. Some RuOx thermometers come with pre-defined calibrations, so that temperatures can be directly measured by researchers without having to measure resistance then perform calculations. These sensors are typically quite small, so that they can be mounted directly to quantum samples. This product has a temperature calibration

The calibration range of this sensor is also impressive, extending all the way up to 40 K ensuring the sensor will remain accurate, even if drive pulses heat the quantum samples up considerably. Additionally, Lake Shore's RuOx also has superior specifications in terms of error, repeatability, and time scale of its thermal response.
Market research concluded that the ultra-low temperature series of RuOx thermometers from Lakeshore Cryotronics are the best available products that will meet RITQ needs. No competing products from Scientific Instruments, Oxford Instruments, and Entropy Cryogenics can match the superior specifications of Lakeshore Cryotronics' RX-102B- RS-0.01B. Lake Shore Cyrotronics does not support a network of authorized resellers of Lake Shore products. If these items are not procured it will delay transduction experiments that are currently funded by AFOSR grants and may cause the team to miss program progress targets. Given this information, the Government has determined that no other source can meet this requirement.
