1. SCOPE

1.1. GENERAL SCOPE

This appendix establishes the minimum performance, design, fabrication, installation, and test requirements for a mezzanine, for the 87th Logistics Readiness Squadron (LRS), Building 3101 and 1751, at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey.

The work shall be completed in accordance with this appendix, the Cover Purchase Description (PD), and Air Force (AF) Drawings BMC802-01 and BMC802-03. This appendix covers all equipment, materials, and labor necessary to complete installation of the system.

1.2. DEFINITIONS

Beams - Structural steel supporting member which connect the columns.

Bridging - Steel channels used to provide lateral stability and prevent joists from twisting.

Column - Structural steel that supports beams and joist.

Framing - Consists of beams, joists, and bridging.

Joists - Structural steel member supporting the decking.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The mezzanine shall be located according to AF Drawings BMC802- 01 and BMC802-03. One new mezzanine shall be used to support wide span shelving specified in Appendix E. One existing mezzanine shall be modified and used to support the gravity roller system specified in Appendix B. The mezzanine system shall consist of the following components:

A. Freestanding, structural steel mezzanine with columns, beams, joists, decking, and bridging

B. Two sets of stairs, platforms, handrails, midrails, and kickplates

C. Lighting

D. Fire suppression system

E. 1 set of pivoting safety gates specified in BMC802-01. 5 sets of inward opening gates specified in BMC802-03.

F. Conduit, wiring, mechanical fasteners, and all other items required to install a functional mezzanine system.

3.2. CHARACTERISTICS

3.2.1. PERFORMANCE AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

3.2.1.1. LOAD CAPACITY

All components of the new mezzanine shall be designed to support a minimum capacity of 150 pounds per square foot. The mezzanine in bldg 3101 shall be capable of sustaining the point loads of the fully loaded wide span shelving specified in Appendix E without permanent deflection or deformation. The mezzanine shall be stable and shall not exhibit any excessive sway motion.

The mezzanine in bldg 1757 shall maintain a rating of at least 150 lbs/sqft and shall withstand point loads of the fully loaded ISU 70 & ISU 90 containers being stored on the gravity roller conveyor systems (Appendix B).

3.2.1.2. FREESTANDING STRUCTURE

The mezzanine shall not be attached to the building except for the warehouse floor. Cross bracing between columns is acceptable on the side of the mezzanine closest to the building wall and the two sides of the mezzanine with the stairs. Cross bracing is not acceptable on the side of the mezzanine where the gravity roller system is located.

3.2.1.2.1. PRE-ENGINEERED

All components of the mezzanine shall be pre-engineered so that on-site welding is eliminated.

3.2.1.3. DEFLECTION UNDER LOAD

No component of the mezzanine shall exhibit deflections greater than the length of the component divided by 360 (L/360) under uniformly loaded conditions.

3.2.1.4. DIMENSION AND CLEAR HEIGHT

The new mezzanine in bldg. 3101 shall be a nominal 55 feet long by 31 feet wide. The mezzanine shall have a nominal clear height of 10 feet underneath all components of the mezzanine.

The top of the decking shall be a maximum of 11 feet 6 inches above the warehouse floor.

3.2.1.5. STRUCTURAL AND SEISMIC REQUIREMENTS (REV1)

The system shall be designed and constructed in accordance with applicable seismic design codes, including but not limited to the International Building Code (IBC), United Facilities Criteria (UFC) design documents, and the Cover PD. A Professional Engineer (PE) shall certify all structural and seismic designs. The certification shall be in the form of stamped, signed, sealed, and dated drawings and calculations showing the system meets or exceeds all design requirements.

3.2.1.6. COLUMNS

Columns shall be cold formed, structural steel tubing and shall meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM A500, Grade B, FY-46KSI.

Columns shall be spaced as shown on AF Drawing BMC802-01. The columns shall be pre-punched at the top to provide a secure connection to beams and joists. Columns shall be a minimum of 6 inches by 6 inches by 3/16 inch thick.

3.2.1.6.1. BASE PLATES

Base plates shall be used under each column to distribute the load. The base plates shall be factory welded to the columns and pre-punched to provide a secure connection to the floor.

The base plates shall be anchored in accordance with the manufacturers recommended procedure. The base plates shall meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM A36 and shall be a minimum of 12 inches X 12 inches X 1 inch. Grout shall be used under all base plates.

3.2.1.7. FRAMING

Hot rolled structural steel members shall meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM A570. Cold-formed structural steel members

McGuire AFB, Appendix A - Page 5 shall meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM A500 or ASTM A611.

Framing shall consist of beams, joists, and bridging as defined in 1.2. The framing shall be designed to support the full rated load and the calculated mezzanine dead load.

3.2.1.7.1. BEAMS

All beams shall be structural steel and shall be pre-punched for secure connection to the columns and joists with A325 bolts.

3.2.1.7.2. JOISTS

All joists shall be structural steel and shall be pre-punched for secure connection to the beams with A325 bolts.

3.2.1.7.3. BRIDGING

Structural steel bridging channels shall be minimum 18-gauge steel.

3.2.1.7.4. DECKING

The decking shall consist of a metal roof deck and composite flooring. The decking shall sustain the load specified in 3.2.1.1.

3.2.1.7.4.1. METAL ROOF DECK

The metal roof deck shall be galvanized or painted on both sides and consist of minimum 20-gauge, type-B roof deck meeting the requirements of ASTM A611, Grade C, or minimum 18 gauge, type-B roof deck meeting the requirements of ASTM A446, Grade A. If the roof deck is painted, the bottom of the roof deck shall be painted white and the top shall be painted the manufacturer's standard color. The roof deck shall be securely fastened to the framing with plated, self-tapping, steel screws or equivalent as approved by the Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative

(COTR).

3.2.1.7.4.2. COMPOSITE FLOORING

The composite flooring shall be Resindek 45 or equivalent.

Resindek flooring is a special blend of phenolic resin, wax emulsion, and wood fibers combined under heat and pressure. The flooring shall be minimum 3/4-inch thick. The flooring shall have an exterior sealant. The sealant shall be Acryseal or equivalent. A sealant color chart shall be provided at the post award conference for selection by the COTR. The flooring sheets

McGuire AFB, Appendix A - Page 6 shall be tongue and groove on long sides forming an integral surface. The flooring sheets shall be securely fastened to the framing with Resindek type drill screws or equivalent. All exposed sides of the composite flooring shall be covered.

3.2.1.8. STAIRWAY SYSTEMS

Stairway systems shall be provided as shown on AF Drawings BMC802-01. The stairway systems shall include two stairs, structural steel stringers, railing, and a platform if required by OSHA 1910.24, and all necessary hardware to install the stairway. The stairway shall be minimum 36 inches wide. The stairway shall be designed and constructed in accordance with OSHA 1910.24. The stairway system shall be painted safety yellow.

3.2.1.8.1. STAIR TREADS

Stairs shall be open tread type with bar grating or closed tread with diamond plate.

3.2.1.8.2. STRINGERS

Stringers shall meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM A36.

3.2.1.8.3. RAILING

Railing shall be provided on the open sides of all exposed stairways and platforms. Rails shall be designed and constructed in accordance with OSHA 1910.23 and shall be of either the 2-rail or 3-rail type. The top rail surface shall be between 30-34 inches above the stair tread surface. Railing shall be minimum 1-1/4 inch, schedule 40 steel tubing. Rail sections shall be joined together with either galvanized fittings or a pre-engineered union. Railing for the stairway shall be bolt connected or factory welded to the stringer such that it is capable of withstanding a load of at least 200 pounds applied in any direction at any point on the top rail.

3.2.1.8.4. PLATFORMS

The platform shall be the same width as the stairway and minimum 48 inches in length (measured in the direction of travel).

3.2.1.8.5. BOLLARDS

Bollards shall be located near the mezzanine as detailed on drawing BMC802-01.

3.2.1.9. MEZZANINE RAILING

Railing shall be provided on the open sides of all exposed mezzanine floor. Rails shall be designed and constructed in accordance with OSHA 1910.23 and shall be the 2-rail type. The top rail surface shall be 42-inches (3101) and 48-inches (1757, modified section) above the mezzanine decking. Railing shall be minimum 1-1/2 inch diameter, schedule 40 steel tubing. Rail sections shall be joined together with either galvanized fittings or a pre-engineered union. Railing for the mezzanine shall be bolt-connected to a structural framing beam such that it is capable of withstanding a load of at least 200 pounds applied in any direction at any point on the top rail. Support posts shall be spaced on a maximum of 8-foot centers.

3.2.1.10. INWARD ROTATING GATE (BUILDING 1757)

Five separate 126-inch rail gates shall be located as shown on AF Drawing BMC802-03. The gates shall each consist of two swinging gates, a latch to lock the two gates together, and a rod attached to each of the gates to secure the gates at the bottom. A kick-plate meeting the requirements of paragraph

3.2.1.12 shall be secured to the bottom of each gate. Swinging gates shall open 180 degrees and shall be able to be fastened to the rail when opened 180 degrees, i.e. chain and hook. The gates shall be centered on the GRC.

3.2.1.11. PIVOTING SAFETY GATE (BUILDING 3101)

Pivoting safety gates shall be installed as shown on Drawings BMC802-01. Pivoting safety gate shall be “A-Mezz Industrial Structures, Inc.”, part number Mezz-200 or equivalent. The gate shall allow a pallet load to be safely loaded on the mezzanine while keeping personnel away from the opening.

3.2.1.11.1. PIVOTING SAFETY GATE DIMENSIONS (REV1)

The pivoting safety gates shall provide a nominal six-foot wide openings. Overall height of the gates when open shall not exceed 7 feet. The gate shall allow for a load with the dimensions 50”L x 50”W x 50”H to pass through with no issues.

Side handrails shall be a nominal 36 inches deep and not exceed 42 inches.

3.2.1.11.2. PIVOTING SAFETY GATE CONSTRUCTION

When in the closed position the railing for the pivoting safety gate shall line up with the mezzanine railing. In addition, a 4 inch high kickplate shall be installed on all pivoting safety gate rails. The kickplate shall be minimum 14-gauge steel and shall be securely fastened to the pivoting safety gate railings.

The pivoting safety gate color shall be safety yellow. Handles for ease of opening and closing the pivoting safety gate shall be installed.

3.2.1.12. KICKPLATE

A kickplate shall be provided on all open sides of the mezzanine and platforms. The kickplate shall be minimum 4-inches high with no more than 1/4-inch clearance between the floor and the bottom of the kickplate. The kickplate shall be minimum 14-gauge steel and shall be securely fastened to the mezzanine or railings. At the inward opening gates (1757), in front of GRC rows, the kickplate shall be raised 6 inches in order to clear the GRC sections as they are swung open.

3.2.1.13. FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

Bldg 3101 Bay A & Bldg 1757 mezzanine requirements:

The Contractor shall design and install a wet-pipe fire suppression system under the mezzanine in accordance with UFC 3- 600-01, NFPA 13, and all applicable fire codes at McGuire AFB, New Jersey. The system shall be designed for occupancy classification Ordinary Hazard Group 2. Sprinkler heads and piping shall be located so not to be susceptible to damage or interfere with normal operations under the mezzanine. The clear height specified in 3.2.1.5 shall be maintained. The Contractor shall connect the fire suppression system to the existing system piping at the most economical point permitted by UFC 3-600-01 criteria and approved by the COTR. A flow test on the existing system shall be performed to determine flow and pressure characteristics. Current estimated flow is 434 GPM. The mezzanine fire suppression system design shall be compatible with the existing system. To allow for future water supply degradation, a 5-psi safety margin shall be provided between the mezzanine sprinkler system demand pressure and water supply pressure at the calculated combined roof-level and mezzanine design flow rate. The proposed sprinkler design, equipment cut sheet with supporting hydraulic calculations, shall be approved by the COTR prior to initiation of any work on the fabrication or installation of the sprinkler system. Prior to impairing the existing system for connection of the mezzanine sprinkler system, the Contractor shall notify the Base Fire Department.

The existing fire suppression system shall not be inoperative for any time longer than that required to make the required connections. Connect the mezzanine sprinklers to the existing 4 inch sprinkler headers on the east side, by an estimated 150 foot of piping. The new sprinklers shall include a 4 inch shut-off valve with tamper switch, a pressure gauge, a flow switch, a flow testing assembly connecting to drain, a low point drain, and a high point vent. The shutoff valve shall be equipped with a chain operator. Sprinklers shall be upright, protected by guards, 8.0 k value, sized for 0.2 GPM/FT^2 density IAW UFC 3- 600-01, table 9-3. Reprogram Monaco fire alarm panel and adjust message to central station as required. The fire suppression design and hydraulic calculations shall be sealed by a qualified registered Professional Engineer or a R.M.E. (NICET Level IV) technician.

Modification to Bldg 1757 current mezzanine system requirements:

The contractor shall provide materials, labor, and supervision to properly modify the sprinklers. The existing sprinkler piping under the mezzanine is shown on drawing BMC802-05. One row of mezzanine section shall be removed, per appendix J.

Sprinkler modification will require the following. 1) The contractor shall submit shop drawings and material cut-sheets for review and approval prior to procurement. 2) The contractor shall minimize the shutdown duration and have all tools/ materials on hand before and field work. 3) The contractor shall inform the base Fire Department (FD) in advance of any field work, have the FD representative inform central station in advance, turn off the riser valve, and drain the water from sprinkler system. 4) The contractor shall remove two sprinkler branch pipes, and the six (6) sprinklers at each pipe. 5) The contractor shall relocate one 2-1/2” supply pipe and cut & cap one 2-1/2” pipe. 6) The contractor shall support revised piping IAW NFPA 13 and brace the pipe, if required by NFPA 13. 7) The contractor shall re-fill sprinkler pipes with water, bleed air from piping, hydraulically test sprinkler pipes at working pressure, witnessed by FD, per IAW NFPA 13 requirement. 8) The contractor shall re-open the riser valve and have the FD representative inform central station. 9) The contractor shall dispose of removed piping by IAW, the base, and New Jersey DEP environmental procedures, then turn over the removed sprinklers to the project Contracting Officer’s Representative.

*The contractor shall require a hot work permit for this work, issued by the base FD and is valid for 24 hours (daily requests required). Portable fire extinguishers shall be on hand by the contractor during field work.

3.2.1.13.1. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Provide and install two 10 pound ABC dry chemical fire extinguishers. Fire extinguishers shall be installed on opposite ends of the mezzanine and attached securely to the mezzanine railing.

3.2.2. ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS

3.2.2.1. LIGHTING

The Contractor shall provide LED lighting underneath the mezzanine with a minimum luminance level of 50 foot-candles measured at 30 inches above the floor. Provide as a minimum 15(fifteen) fixtures, out of which 5 (five) shall have emergency battery packs fixtures of the type described below. Lighting shall be supported by the mezzanine. Lighting shall run perpendicular to the gravity roller system. Fixtures shall not be suspended.

Layout light fixtures for optimum light distribution with 2 (two) emergency light fixtures each evenly distributed at the two outer most X-axis rows and the remaining one at the middle.

3.2.2.1.1. FIXTURES

Light fixtures shall be LED type linear complete with low profile acrylic frosted lens type diffusers. They shall be EM units for emergency battery pack equipped fixtures and equal with the following features:

3.2.2.1.2. ON/OFF SWITCHES

Provide two pairs of 3-way light switches shall be located as shown on AF Drawing BMC802-01. The switches shall be of the totally enclosed, tumbler type. The switches shall be located on the columns on opposing ends of the mezzanine at 52 inches +/- 2 inches in height from the floor.

3.2.2.1.3. RECEPTACLES

Five receptacle boxes containing a minimum 2 outlets each shall be located on the center columns, as shown on AF Drawing BMC802-

01. The receptacles shall be located on the columns 52 inches +/- 2 inches in height from the floor.

3.2.2.1.4. WIRING

The contractor shall wire the lighting fixtures divided into two circuits, provide two 1Pole-20A branch circuit breakers in existing spaces in Lighting ‘A’ Panel ‘2A’ East Bay, and provide 2#12,12G in ¾” EMT from Lighting Panel to lighting circuits.

The contractor shall wire the receptacles divided into two circuits, provide two 1Pole-20A branch circuit breakers in existing spaces in Lighting ‘A’ Panel ‘2A’ East Bay, provide 2#12,12G in ¾” EMT from Lighting Panel to receptacle circuits, and conduit routing shall be as follows: Up from the Lighting panel to ceiling and down from ceiling to respective light switch or receptacle.

3.2.3. SAFETY FEATURES

3.2.3.1. CAPACITY MARKINGS (REV1)

Live load capacity metal signs shall be displayed on the front and ends of the mezzanine. The load capacity metal signs shall additionally state “WARNING: No 463L sized pallets or containers over 7,500 lbs. shall be stored on top of this mezzanine.”

3.2.3.2. NO-STEP MARKINGS

Signs shall be posted on the railings indicating that the rails are not steps. Signs shall be posted on a maximum of 20-foot centers.

3.2.3.3. SAFETY FACTOR

All vertical members of the mezzanine shall have a minimum safety factor of 1.92 to 1 and all horizontal members shall have a minimum safety factor of 1.67 to 1.

4. QUALITY CONFORMANCE

The system shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the Cover Purchase Description. These inspections shall be completed as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

4.2. TEST

The following test shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

1. The COTR shall select three joists. At the midpoint of the joists, the distance from the bottom of the joist to the floor will be measured in inches and recorded as M1.

A minimum of three pallets weighing 150 pounds per square foot shall be placed over the joists. After a continuous 4 hours, the distance from the midpoint of the joist to the floor will be measured in inches and recorded as M2.

The deflection shall be calculated by using the following formula:

4.3. CERTIFICATIONS

1. GENERAL SCOPE

This appendix establishes the minimum performance, design, fabrication, installation, and test requirements for pallet rack for the 87th Logistics Readiness Squadron (LRS) in Building 3101, at McGuire Air Force Base (AFB), New Jersey. The work shall be completed in accordance with this appendix, the Cover Purchase Description (PD), and Air Force (AF) Drawing BMC802-01. This appendix covers all equipment, materials, and labor necessary to complete installation of the system.

1.1. DEFINITIONS

Bay - A storage location in the pallet rack which measures from the front shelf beam to the back shelf beam in depth, and from the inside of the upright frame to the inside of the opposite upright frame in width.

Decking - A wire mesh surface spanning the area between two parallel shelf beams for the storage of loose or boxed items.

Pallet rack unit - A unit is an assembly of two upright frames and all shelf beams joining those two upright frames, and the wire mesh decking or tire supports spanning the beams or the rack supports.

Tire support – Angular shaped members attached to front-to-back supports to span the bay from the inside of one upright to the inside of the opposite column. Tire supports are used to facilitate tire storage by cradling them while they rest in a vertical position.

2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

Applicable documents shall be in accordance with Section 2 of the Cover PD as well as RMI/ANSI MH16.1-2012 and RMI/ANSI

MH26.2-2007.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The pallet racks will be used to store palletized loads and collapsible bulk containers in such a manner to permit placement and removal of any individual load without disturbing any other load. Wire decking shall be provided to facilitate storage of loose or boxed items. The pallet rack system shall be capable of supporting uniformly distributed loads as specified in 3.2.3.

Storage and retrieval operations within the pallet rack will be performed with the use of stock pickers specified in the Cover PD and an existing general purpose forklift. The pallet rack shall conform to the requirements of the Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) 2012 Specification for the Design, Testing, and Utilization of Industrial Steel Storage Racks.

3.2. PHYSICAL AND PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS

3.2.1. CONFIGURATION REQUIREMENTS

The pallet rack units shall be located as shown on AF Drawing BMC802-01. The racks shall be capable of being assembled side-by-side, in a row, using common uprights to support the shelf beams. Uprights shall be 12 feet tall and 4 feet deep.

Shelf beams shall be 9 feet long. Shelf beams for pallet rack shall be installed at heights as shown on AF Drawing BMC802-01.

3.2.2. UPRIGHT FRAMES

The upright frames shall be of steel, all welded construction consisting of two columns, diagonal and horizontal braces, and floor bearing plates. Each upright frame shall be capable of supporting fully loaded bays without permanent deformation. The upright frames of like racks shall be interchangeable. Upright frames for the rack shall have a minimum 18,000 pound capacity.

Upright frames shall have a safety factor of 1.92 to 1. Every upright shall be labelled with: Manufacturer, Part #, and Capacity.

3.2.2.1. COLUMNS

The columns shall be a continuous channel, box channel, rectangular, square or other formation approved by the Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative (COTR). Each column shall have openings to readily accommodate beam connectors, end-to-end, at corresponding heights through the height range of the column openings. The openings at the bottom shall allow for the tops of shelf beams to be installed at six inches above the ground and shall continue upward to the top of the column by 2 inch increments. All openings of each column shall be identical to each other and identical to the openings of all other columns. The position of all corresponding openings of the columns shall not vary more than 3/32 inch as measured from the bottom of the bearing plates. The arrangement of the openings and the fastening devices of the beams shall be such that the tops of the beams are flush, within 3/8 inch, with the top of the column.

3.2.2.2. BEARING PLATES

The bottom of each column shall have a load bearing plate securely attached. Each bearing plate shall be sufficiently sized to disperse the maximum load imposed by the column. Each bearing plate shall have a minimum of two punched holes to accept minimum 1/2-inch anchor bolts in accordance with 3.2.5.

3.2.2.3. DIAGONAL/HORIZONTAL BRACING

The columns shall be braced by horizontal and diagonal braces.

Each end of all braces shall be securely welded to the columns.

The braces shall not protrude beyond the sides of the columns or obstruct the attachment of the shelf beams to the columns, at any height on the columns. The centerline of the bottom horizontal brace shall not be located more than 12 inches from the bottom of the upright frame, and the centerline of the top horizontal brace shall be located not farther than 12 inches from the top of the upright frame. Other diagonal and horizontal braces shall be uniformly spaced between the top and bottom horizontal braces.

3.2.2.4. ROW SPACERS

Row spacers shall be capable of joining the backs of two upright frame sections together to form a double row arrangement. The row spacers shall provide a minimum 6 inch flue space when storage locations are back-to-back. Each end shall firmly and securely attach to the column and prevent unintentional disengagement. The row spacer shall be of sufficient size and strength to withstand all forces applied to the connected upright frames during normal loading and unloading operations without deformation or failure. The Contractor shall supply and install a minimum of 3 row spacers for each set of back-to-back frames. The top row spacer shall be installed within 24 inches of the top of the frame. The bottom row spacer shall be installed within 24 inches of the bottom of the frame.

3.2.3. SHELF BEAMS

Shelf beams shall be the box or step type. Any openings in the shelf beam construction shall face inward, they shall not face the aisle. The connector shall not be welded to the column.

Shelf beam-to-column connection shall be of the locking type.

Each pair of shelf beams shall provide a bay width of 108 inches. A uniformly distributed load of 6,000 pounds per bay shall cause no permanent deformations and elastic deformations

FA8604-19-R-8106 Attachment 5, Rev 1 Page 7 of 16 shall not exceed 0.56 percent of the unsupported span, measured with respect to the two ends of the beam. Shelf beams shall be designed with a safety factor of 1.65 to 1. Every shelf beam shall be labelled with: Manufacturer, Part #, and Capacity.

3.2.3.1. CONNECTORS

Each end of the shelf beams shall have a multiple prong slip-fit or slip-joint type shelf beam-to-column connector. Separate shelf beams and connectors are unacceptable. The connectors shall be adjustable, allowing the shelf beams to be moved with no more than the use of a soft hammer. The connector shall be capable of transferring all loads and external forces of the shelf beam to the column without failure of the connection, or damage to the column or connector. The prongs shall be of sufficient number, size, and strength to withstand repeated loading and unloading of the rack, and to continually sustain the rated shelf beam load. The prongs shall engage with the openings of the columns in such a manner to prevent lateral rotation of the beam, with each prong contributing to the support of the beam. The prongs shall engage with the openings of the columns to ensure a snug metal-to-metal fit between the horizontal and vertical load carrying members. The prongs shall be of the same design as the opening.

3.2.3.2. SHELF BEAM-TO-COLUMN SAFETY LOCK

Each shelf beam-to-column connection shall have a safety lock which shall lock the shelf beam to the column. The design and manner of construction of the device shall prevent accidental disengagement of the shelf beam-to-column connection during movement or shifting of the assembled rack unit due to impact to the upright frame or shelf beam from horizontal or vertical directions. The safety locking device shall be an integral, attached part of the shelf beam. The safety lock shall be employed without the use of tools, and no part thereof shall obstruct or restrict the loading or unloading of the racks.

3.2.4. LEVELING SHIMS

Leveling shims shall be provided with the rack units where necessary. The shims shall have holes corresponding to the holes in the bearing plate, and shall anchor or lock with the bearing plate when the rack is erected. Shims shall be equal in width and length to the bearing plate under which it is installed. Shims shall be of varying thickness so no more than five shims are installed at any point. Slotted shims shall be unacceptable.

3.2.5. ANCHORING THE STRUCTURE

The rack system shall be anchored to resist all design shear and uplift forces. The rack units shall be designed to be a rigid freestanding structure and shall not be connected to any existing building structure except the floor. Each bearing plate shall be securely anchored to the floor with minimum one 1/2-inch diameter anchor bolt. The minimum embedment of the anchor shall be in accordance with 3.3.2.3 of the Cover PD.

3.2.6. ASSEMBLY

The assembled pallet rack system shall be rigid, stable, and without deformation or skewing when each bay is loaded to the capacity of the design loads. The pallet rack system shall assemble so that the columns are perpendicular to the beams and parallel to each other. Shelf frames shall be straight and square. All horizontal members shall be level to within 1/8 inch per 10 feet measured over any distance in the rack system.

3.2.7. WIRE MESH DECKING

Wire mesh decking shall be installed in all bays between all parallel shelf beams. The decking shall be heavy duty welded steel wire with integral support channels capable of supporting a uniformly distributed load of 6,000 pounds per bay. The decking shall be designed with a safety factor of 1.65 to 1.

The decking shall not exhibit permanent deformation and elastic deformations shall not exceed 0.56 percent of the unsupported span. Decking shall be R-Mark compliant. The decking shall be plated or galvanized to protect against corrosion. Decking shall be the appropriate type to interface with the type shelf beam being provided. The ends of the wire mesh decking shall bend over the shelf beam to provide a secure load supporting deck and keep the decking from accidentally disengaging from the shelf beams. In some locations, the decking shall be cut to fit around existing building columns.

3.2.8. NETTING

Two inch by 2 inch black nylon netting shall be attached to the outside rows of single pallet racking to prevent material from being push off the back of the wide span. The netting shall span the full width and height of the rows.

Card holders shall be installed on the ends of each pallet rack row as shown on AF Drawing BMC802-01 for row identification.

Two card holders shall be mounted on each end of the center rows and a single card holder for the two outside rows. The card holders shall be large enough for a minimum 8 inch by 8 inch card to be displayed. The card holders shall be mounted between 5 feet and 7 feet from the floor. Row identification cards will be made up by the warehouse personnel according to their established location assignment practices. A blank card will be provided by the Contractor for each card holder.

4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

4.1. INSPECTION

The system shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the Cover PD. These inspections shall be completed as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

4.2. TESTS

The following tests shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

Three pallet bays, picked at random, shall each be loaded with two 3,000-pound pallets (total 6,000 pounds) to ensure the pallet beams are set in place. The loads shall then be removed.

The distance from the top of each designated shelf beam to the top of the shelf beam above it shall be measured and recorded as M1. Two 3,000-pound pallets shall then be put back into the designated pallet bays. The loads shall be left for a minimum of four continuous hours.

The distance from the designated shelf beams to the top of the next shelf beam shall be measured again and recorded as M2. The following formula shall be used to determine the deflection amount:

Deflection = [(M1 - M2) / 108 ] * 100

If the deflection is greater than 0.56 or if permanent deformation exists when the loads are removed, the system shall fail.

2. 3.2.3.2. The shelf-to-column safety lock shall be tested at a minimum of ten random locations.

Personnel shall attempt to separate empty shelf beams from the column without disabling the shelf-to-beam safety lock. If a shelf separates from a column then the system fails the test.

The distance from the top of the deck to the top of the deck above it shall be measured and recorded as M1. The 3,000-pound pallets shall then be put back into the designated decking bays. The loads shall be left for a minimum of four continuous hours.
