2.9. Warranty. The equipment manufacturer shall provide a 1-year warranty ensuring that the manufacturer’s products are free from defects in material and workmanship during the warranty period. All shipping, parts, and labor for repair, and/or replacement if needed, shall be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty during the warranty period.

3. Interactive Simulators, Overall Characteristics. To support the interactivity of the STEM

Learning Node and the Space Shuttle Exhibit, the NMUSAF has a requirement for one to three interactive space shuttle flight simulators. Minimum requirements are detailed below.

3.1. Representation. The simulator shall be representative of a space shuttle commander’s station (cockpit left seat, or left and right seats) with realism at least on the level of a durable, high-traffic arcade-style installation, and may include three-dimensional representations of gauges, dials, switches and other instrumentation or equipment consistent with a space shuttle cockpit. The simulator’s outer shell shall suggest the outside of a space shuttle with appropriate window shapes and an overall black-and-white color scheme suggestive of a space shuttle.

3.2. Accommodation. The simulator shall be compliant with standards expressed in the

Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 to allow persons in wheelchairs to “land” the shuttle, while also providing height-adjustable seating for non-handicapped visitors to use while operating the simulator. The simulator may accommodate one or two persons at a time.

3.3. Operation. The simulator shall run a 3-5 minute software-based computerized interactive simulation of a space shuttle landing. Separate monitors in the simulator shall represent views of flight instruments and a front window view as the operator controls the

“landing” via a joystick. If a two-place simulator is proposed, each place shall operate independently. “Landing” simulator software shall first instruct the visitor in how to operate the controls and land the craft, then perform the simulation, and finally provide brief feedback to the

“pilot” assessing their performance. The simulator shall provide appropriate cockpit sounds throughout the simulation.

3.4. Durability, maintenance, movement, and updates. The simulator shall be durable enough to withstand daily use by 150 visitors, as in a high-traffic public museum environment, with fluorescent or LED backlighting behind panels drawing 200 W or less and rated to operate at least 10,000 hours before replacement. The simulator as a package shall include provisions for periodic or as-needed repair, maintenance and/or replacement of components, as well as software updates as needed or desired. The simulator shall be movable in the sense that it is a permanent installation that can be relocated by Museum staff if necessary, and it shall include appropriate technical manuals and instructions for Museum staff to accomplish a move.

3.5. Computer, monitor, joystick, and audio characteristics. The simulator shall incorporate a personal computer using a Windows operating system, with Windows XP or

Windows 7 Professional (32-bit) as a minimum requirement. The computer’s operating system shall be updatable to allow for better operating systems and new software. Simulation display on two monitors shall be accomplished by a single computer with video outputs to two monitors.

3.5.1. Monitors. The simulator shall incorporate two monitors for each operator.

One 19” diagonal LCD or LED monitor shall present the front window view between the

Space Shuttle glareshield and Overhead Console. A second widescreen LCD or LED 19" to 24" diagonal monitor mounted in the console shall display flight instruments.

Touchscreens are not required, nor is wide-angle viewing capacity. Monitor contrast ratio shall be minimum 1000:1. Monitor resolution shall be 1400 x 900 or higher.

3.5.2. Processor. The minimum requirement shall be a dual core Intel i5 processor operating at 3 GHz, though a more powerful processor is desirable.

3.5.3. Random Access Memory. The minimum RAM shall be 4GB incorporated in a hard drive of minimum 200GB capacity.

3.5.4. Video card. The video card running the simulation shall be capable of running smooth video on a 30”+ monitor, and equivalent to an upper-range commercial gaming card such as the Nvidia GeForce GTX 570, AMD Radeon HD 7970, Nvidia

GeForce GTX 580, or similar devices, which are usually priced in the $400-$600 range.

The power draw determined by the card shall be 500 W or less.

3.5.5. Joystick. The joystick shall be a two-axis sturdy arcade-style device with

100 Kohm potentiometers. A trigger switch may also be used in the simulation. An adapter for joystick-to-USB shall also be required if a joystick with a game port connector is used.

3.5.6. Audio system. Each simulator station shall be equipped with a speaker system of 30W or more total capacity, with a separate subwoofer.

3.6. Warranty. The simulator manufacturer shall provide a 1-year warranty ensuring that the manufacturer’s products (i.e., the simulator structures) are free from defects in material and workmanship during the warranty period. Equipment incorporated from other manufacturers shall be subject to those manufacturers’ warranties covering shipping, parts, and labor for repair, and/or replacement if needed, during the warranty period.

3.7. Manuals and consultation. The simulator manufacturer shall provide equipment and structural manuals or diagrams such that Museum personnel may service or repair/replace components when required. The simulator manufacturer shall be available via telephone, surface mail, or electronic mail as needed for consultation regarding the overall device’s structure and equipment.
