Performance-Based Work Statement for
MHU-196/204
Pneumatic System Upgrade
Heavy Munitions Lift Trailers IPT
FD2060-15-70104
1.0 Description of Services
1.1 Objective(s): This Performance-based Work Statement (PWS) describes the services required to upgrade the pneumatic system on the Wyle prototype trailers, MHU-204A and MHU- 196A. These services are hardware changes to the configuration baseline.
1.2 Benefit to United States Air Force (USAF): This acquisition will benefit the USAF by completing the upgrades required on the trailers to produce a safe, suitable and effective trailer.
The resulting prototypes will serve as production samples for the follow on depot to be performed on the trailer fleet.
1.3 Background: The MHU-196/204 munitions handling trailers are support equipment used to load nuclear and conventional munitions on B-1s, B-2s and B-52 aircraft. These trailers are between 20 and 30 years old and were identified in the Air Force Comprehensive Assessment of Nuclear Sustainment (AFCANS) report as requiring modernization.
The pneumatic system requires updating to resolve compressor obsolescence and system moisture issues. The primary function of the pneumatic system is to release the four brake chambers on the trailer while the trailer is in the self-propelled mode. The pneumatic system also uses air from the tow vehicle to actuate several valves to facilitate towing. The on board compressor is obsolete and is currently supported through a commercial rebuild process.
