SECTION 11 24 12 – RIGID-RAIL FALL PROTECTION SYSTEMS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and other Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes the following:
1. Rigid-rail fall protection systems.
B. Related Sections:
1. Division 05 Section "Metal fabrications for Fall Protection Systems”.
1.3 RIGID-RAIL FALL PROTECTION SYSTEMS
A. In accordance with OSHA (proposed 29 CFR 1910.128(c)(10) and 1926.502(D)(15)), "anchorages to which personal fall arrest equipment are attached … shall be designed, installed, and used as part of a complete personal fall arrest system which maintains a safety factor of at least two, under the supervision of a qualified person.”
1.4 REFERENCES
A. OSHA (29 CFR 1910.66 App C, Section I, (c)(9), proposed 29 CFR 1910.128(c)(9) and 29 CFR 1926.502(d)(8)).
B. ANSI/ASSE Z359 - Fall Protection Code, 2007.
1.5 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Delegated Design: The rigid-rail systems shall be designed under the supervision of a professional engineer qualified in the design of rigid-rail systems. The professional engineer shall be designated as an OSHA qualified person in fall protection.
B. Verify all existing site dimensions prior to commencing design. Report unsatisfactory site conditions to the Architect in writing. Indicate measurements on shop drawings.
C. Design the rigid-rail systems to comply with the following criteria:

1. Rails and their supporting connections shall be designed in accordance with ANSI/ASSE Z359.6.
2. Users to attach to the system using ANSI/ASSE Z359.14 self-retracting lanyards that limits the average arresting force on the user to 900 lbs.
1.6 SUBMITTALS
A. Statement of the fall protection Sub-Contractor’s designation as an OSHA qualified person in fall protection. The qualified person shall be a professional engineer licensed to practice within the State of Oklahoma.
B. Shop drawings:
1. Provide shop drawings showing complete layout and configuration of the rigid-rail systems, including all components and accessories.
2. Clearly indicate design and fabrication, hardware and installation details.
3. Include design calculations for the systems and components.
C. Mill certificates: Signed by manufacturers of carbon steel and stainless-steel products certifying that products furnished comply with requirements.
D. Welding certificates.
E. Independent testing agencies: Qualifications of firm(s) to be subcontracted to perform testing required by the drawings and specifications.
F. Test reports: As defined in Section 3.3 “Testing”.
G. Equipment manual, inspection log and warranty paperwork: Submit at closeout, documentation to include:
1. As-built drawings of the installed systems.
2. Manufacturer’s initial inspection and certification for use logs.
3. System use procedures.
4. Pre-use inspection procedural requirements.
5. Manufacturer’s periodic inspection and maintenance requirements.
6. Warranty paperwork.
H. As-built drawings: Update shop drawings to include:
1. Manufacturer, part name, part number and serial number of all fall protection equipment installed. Clearly indicated on the drawings the location where each part has been installed.
I. All submittals shall be signed and sealed by the professional engineer responsible for the supervision of their preparation.

1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Professional engineer: A professional engineer who is experienced in providing engineering services of the kind indicated. Engineering services are defined as those performed for installations of systems that are similar to those indicated for this Project in material, design and extent.
B. Qualified person: OSHA defines a qualified person as one with a recognized degree or professional certificate and extensive knowledge and experience in the subject field who is capable of design, analysis, evaluation and specifications in the subject work, project or product.
C. Manufacturer: Work shall be performed by a manufacturer and installer specializing in the design, fabrication and installation of rigid-rail fall protection systems.
D. Installers: Installers shall be manufacturer certified.
E. Source limitations: Obtain each component of the system through one source from a single manufacturer.
F. Welding: Perform welding using AWS certified welders.
1. AWS D1.1, “Structural Welding Code - Steel.”
2. AWS D1.6, “Structural Welding Code - Stainless Steel.”
1.8 WARRANTY
A. Provide a minimum one-year material and labor warranty.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Available manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the work include, but are not limited to, the following:

B. Comparable Product and Substitution Requests: Submit three copies of each request for consideration. Identify product or fabrication or installation method to be replaced.
1. Documentation: Show compliance with requirements for substitutions and the following, as applicable:
a. Detailed comparison of significant qualities of proposed substitution with those of the work specified. Significant qualities may include attributes such as performance, weight, size, durability, visual effect, and specific features and requirements indicated.
b. Product Data, including drawings and descriptions of products and fabrication and installation procedures.
c. List of similar installations for completed projects with project names and addresses and names and addresses of architects and owners.
d. Material test reports from a qualified testing agency indicating and interpreting test results for compliance with requirements indicated.
e. Research/evaluation reports evidencing compliance with building code in effect for project, from a model code organization acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.
f. Contractor's certification that proposed substitution complies with requirements in the contract documents and is appropriate for applications indicated.
g. Contractor's waiver of rights to additional payment or time that may subsequently become necessary because of failure of proposed substitution to produce indicated results.
h. Provide additional information or documentation for evaluation as requested by the Architect.
2.2 MATERIALS
A. Unless stated otherwise, all components shall be manufactured from carbon (with a corrosion resistant finish) and/or stainless steel and shall conform to ANSI/ASSE Z359.6.
2.3 COMPONENTS
A. Rigid-rails
1. Rails shall have sufficient strength to span between supports without need for intermediate vertical or lateral support and without yielding of the rail section.
2. The underside of the rail shall consist of an enclosed track along which the trolleys shall move.
3. Rails shall be detailed to enable adjacent sections to be butt-jointed together without interfering with the movement of the trolley.
4. Unless stated otherwise rails shall not impose horizontal reactions at their supports.
5. Curved rail sections shall be provide at changes in direction of the system.
6. Unless shown on the drawings, the enclosed tracks shall be at the same elevation.
7. Track intersections shall not hinder the movement of the trolley over the intersection.
8. End-stops shall be provided at the ends of each rail system to prevent trolleys from disengaging from the rail.

B. Trolleys
1. Trolleys shall enable the user’s sub-lanyard system to connect to the rail.
2. Trolleys shall be designed to enable the user to move safely and without restriction along the length of the rail between end stops.
3. Trolleys shall be compatible with snaphooks and carabiners that comply with
ANSI/ASSE Z359.12
4. Refer to the drawings for the number of users and number of trolleys required per each rail system between end stops.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Installation shall not commence until shop drawings have been received, reviewed and returned by the Architect.
B. Verify all existing conditions prior to commencing installation.
C. Install the rigid-rail system components in accordance with reviewed shop drawings and manufacturer’s requirements.
D. Provide isolation membrane between rigid-rail system components and support structure where potential for dissimilar metal corrosion exists.
E. Immediately notify the Architect in writing of any installation deviations from the shop drawings.
F. Coordinate installation with work of other trades.
3.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Install all work true, level, tightly fitted and flush with adjacent surfaces as required and in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements.
B. Correct deficiencies in work that test reports and inspections indicate do not comply with the Contract Documents.
3.3 TESTING
A. The Contractor shall perform and document all testing and inspection required by the rigid-rail system manufacturer.
B. All testing specified within this section, including the cost of engaging independent testing agencies, shall be the responsibility of the contractor.
C. The Contractor shall produce a written record of test results section to be delivered to the Architect upon completion of installation.

3.4 ADJUSTING
A. Adjust components in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements. Leave all systems in proper working order.
B. Contractor shall verify the free passage of the carrier device along the rail.
3.5 EQUIPMENT MANUAL AND INSPECTION LOG
A. Complete and submit the manufacturer’s equipment manual and inspection log book.
B. Complete and submit warranty paperwork.
