SOLICITATION NUMBER: FA5270‐15‐T‐0020
SEA TURTLE MONITORING SERVICE
No. Page Section Paragraph
1.3.1 What is the purpose of this study?
A: To protect nests, eggs, and hatchings of sea turtles on Torii Beach from inundation and flooding of beach and human impacts including light pollution.
1.3.1 What if the sea turtles are not successfully reproducing?
A: If you are talking about hatching, see the following. If the contractor is expert to relocate sea turtle eggs and if there is no typhoon/heavy raining, hatching success rate should be good, probably around 80%.
1.3.1 What are the results of prior studies?
A: See the following hatching success rate.
2009: 70%
2010: 83%
2011: 84.9
2012: 81%
2013: 34 % All of eggs of one nest were dead. The eggs were laid before starting of monitoring and the nest location was not identified till middle of Jun. The eggs were probably dead due to the inundation of the nest)
2014: 44% Hatching success rate of 2 nests were around 13%, probably due to the inundation of the nests)
1.3.1 What controls have been implemented?
Control to increase reproductive success has not been fully implemented yet.
Beach nourishment is prohibited only at the nest relocation site. It is really hard to prohibit beach nourishment at the main Torii Beach area, since Torii Beach is only the beach located in the central area for military personnel of Okinawa (this is one of the reasons that we relocated nests quickly).
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS RFQ: FA5270‐15‐T‐0020
Try to change lights to sea turtle friendly lights but it has not been fully implemented, due to security issue (and one of the reasons to relocate nests).
