Questions and Answers Abrasive Blasting Cabinets and Maintenance

Q: The current statement of work has the contractor installing the cabinets in the paint booth and plugging them into an existing explosion proof wall plug. However that plug and circuit does not provide the correct voltage and amperage need for operate the abrasive blasting cabinets. What will be done regarding this issue?

A: The statement of work will be updated to include electrical installation from the mechanical room. The following will be added:

“1.2.3.1. Installation: shall include all electrical connections, Air Connections, and operator/maintenance training,

1.2.3.2. The company will run wire and conduit from the mechanical room on the east side of the building to both locations for the blasting units as needed. All electrical components will be intrinsically safe.

1.2.3.3. The blast cabinets will require 480 volts, 3-phase, 60 Hz power to each one. Each cabinet will be required to have its own electrical circuit and breaker.

1.2.3.4. The electrical will include two runs; one run being approximately 100’ to the east wall of the paint booth and one run of approximately 283’ to the west wall. Electrical shall be 3-wire with ground rated for the proper amperage of the cabinets (16 amps). Contractor shall provide 2- 20 amp, 460/3/60 breakers to be installed in the electrical room sub panel adjacent to the paint booth. All electrical shall meet NEC codes.

1.2.3.5. All electrical conduit will be installed on the outside walls and ceiling of the booth with the only booth penetrations being at the termination points within the booth. All penetrations will be properly sealed per NEC codes.

1.2.3.5 The electrical runs shall terminate at East and West wall into a female explosion proof wall receptacle that will be compatible to the male electrical plug on the blast cabinets.”

Additionally, a new CLIN 0021 will be added to cover the additional cost.
