SECTION 07500

RECLAIMED IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This work shall consist of furnishing and installing manual and automatic irrigation systems as shown on the plans and in conformance with these specifications and the Statement of Work. Irrigation system shall include all appurtenances, incidentals and accessories.

1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE

1.2.1 Recycled wastewater shall meet requirements specified in "Wastewater Reclamation

Criteria": Title 22, Division 4, Chapter 3, Section 60301 through 60355 of the California Code of Regulations and regulations and guidelines of the regulatory agencies.

1.2.2 Recycled wastewater use shall be compatible with State Department of Health Services and Regional Water Quality Control Board requirements.

1.2.3 Plans and specifications for recycled wastewater distribution, use and operational practices shall be submitted for review and approval to the County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services prior to implementation.

1.3 QUALITY CONTROL

1.3.1 Prior to commencing construction the Contractor shall contact the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services to arrange for inspection of all on-site recycled and potable water work. No excavation or open trench may be backfilled without first securing Health Department approval. If any piping, recycled or potable is installed prior to plan check approval and/or inspection, all or any portion of the system may be required to be exposed and corrected as necessary. Reclaimed water pipes shall not be run or laid in the same trench as potable water pipes

1.3.2 All reclaimed water pipe and fittings shall be purple. All such piping shall be purple with black or white stenciling. The stenciling shall appear on both sides of the pipe with the marking “CAUTION – RECYCLED WATER” in 5/8-inch letters repeated every 12 inches.

1.3.3 All valves, except fixture supply control valves, shall be equipped with a locking feature.

All mechanical equipment which is appurtenant to the reclaimed water system shall be painted purple in color (PANATONE 512) to match the purple pipe.

1.3.4 In order to minimize construction accidents resulting in pipeline breaks, infiltration of wastewater from leaking wastewater lines into domestic water lines, or accidental cross-connections between recycled wastewater and potable water systems, maximum

07500-2 Irrigation Specification 2009-09-01 attainable separation of recycled wastewater lines and potable water lines shall be practiced.

• Parallel construction: there shall be at least a ten foot (10') separation, all distances measured from pipeline outside diameter.

• Cross-Over construction: As perpendicular as possible; one foot (1') separation, with potable above recycled; full pipe length centered over crossing.

• Alternate Cross-Over construction (distance not maintained): Either the potable or recycled water lines may be sleeved with the same class piping for one full pipe length (minimum ten feet) centered over the cross-over.

• The recycled wastewater system shall be constructed in conformance with potable water system construction standards and in accordance with all other governing codes, rules and regulations.

• Unused or abandoned potable water lines are to be severed as close to water mains as practical, capped and a ten-foot section of abandoned line removed and cemented under Health Department supervision.

• System additions or modifications of existing on-site piping of recycled wastewater and potable water lines shall have at least a ten foot (10') separation, all distances measured from pipeline outside diameter.

1.3.5 Before the irrigation system can be used, the Contractor shall perform the initial cross-connection test in the presence of the administrative authority and other authorities having jurisdiction, and the test shall be ruled successful by the administrative authority before final approval is granted.

1.4 MAINTAIN EXISTING WATER SUPPLY

1.4.1. The Contractor shall notify the Government least four (4) days prior to shutting off the water supply to any portion of an existing irrigation system. The Government shall also be notified when the water supply is returned to that portion of the irrigation system.

1.4.2. Water supply for maintaining existing plantings shall be maintained as specified herein until the permanent water supply or a temporary water supply system, approved by the Government has been provided.

1.4.3. If the work causes a continuous interruption of water supply for more than three (3) consecutive days, the Contractor shall water at the Contractor’s expense all existing plantings, including those being maintained by the Government landscape maintenance staff. Irrigate from that water supply as often as necessary to maintain healthy plant growth. At the option of the Contractor, temporary connections to the existing irrigation system may be provided until the water service has been restored to the irrigation system.

1.5 DEFINITIONS

Accessible -- Accessible when used in reference to an approved backflow prevention assembly shall mean an installation that provides adequate clearance for testing and maintenance.

Agronomic Rate -- The rate of application reclaimed water and association nutrients to plants that is necessary to satisfy the plant’s nutritional and watering requirements while strictly minimizing the amount of nutrients that run-off to surface waters or which pass below the root zone of the plants.

Backflow -- The flow of water or other liquids, fluids, mixtures, gases, or any other substance into the Utilities water supply other than its intended source.

Backflow Prevention Assembly -- An assembly designed to prevent backflow.

Backpressure -- Pressure from an external source and characterized by any pressure at the point of consideration which exceeds supply pressure and would cause, or tend to cause, a reversal of the normal direction of flow.

Backsiphonage -- A reduction in system pressure or supply and characterized by sub-atomspheric pressure resulting in a reversal in the direction of flow.

Contaminant -- Any physical, chemical, biological, or radiological substance or matter in water.

Cross Connection -- Any physical arrangement whereby the Utilities potable water supply system is connected directly or indirectly, with any other water supply system, sewer, drain, conduit, tank, plumbing fixture, or other assembly which contain or may contain contaminated water, sewage, or other waste, liquid or gas of unknown or unsafe quality, which may be capable of imparting contamination to the Utilities water supply system.

Irrigation Main Line -- The portion of the non-potable system which transmits non-potable water from the non-potable service line to the irrigation lateral line.

Irrigation Lateral Line -- The portion of the no-potable system which transmits non-potable water from the irrigation main line to the irrigation heads.

Overspray -- The spray of recycled water outside of the approved irrigation area.

Reclaimed Water -- Wastewater that has received secondary treatment by a domestic wastewater treatment plant and such additional treatment enables the wastewater to meet the standards for approved uses.

Standard Pipe Length -- A section of pipe 18 to 20 feet in length that has no joints.

Unauthorized Discharge -- Any release of recycled water that violates the rules and regulations of the Water Utility, the Local Authority, the Program or all applicable Federal, State or local statues, regulations, ordinances, contracts or other requirements.

Violation -- Noncompliance with any condition of the Recycled Water Use Permit by any person, action or occurrence, intentional or unintentional.

Water Retailer -- The local purveyor of recycled water for the specified service area (public or private). The Water Retailer and the Local Authority may be one and the same (public municipal water supply).

PART 2 - MATERIALS

Materials shall be commercial quality unless otherwise specified. Materials containing asbestos fibers shall not be used. Manufacturer’s warranties, guarantees, instruction sheets and parts lists furnished with articles or material incorporated in the work, shall be delivered to the Government.

2.1 PIPE MATERIAL/PIPE IDENTIFICATION

2.1.1 Plastic pipe supply line shall be purple polyvinyl chloride (PVC) of the types and classifications shown on the plans or specified in the Statement of Work. Plastic pipe supply line shall be approved by the National Sanitation Foundation, and shall conform to the requirements in either ASTM Designation: D 2241 or D 2672, except that plastic pipe supply line with a bell socket formed as an integral part of the pipe for use with rubber ring gaskets shall conform to the requirements in ASTM Designation: D 2241. The belled portion of the pipe for use with rubber ring gaskets shall conform to the requirements in ASTM Designation: D 3139, except for the dimensional ratio, shall be formed to maintain uniformity in alignment and roundness and shall be free of irregularities and defects.

2.1.2 The wall thickness of the bell shall be not less than the specified minimum wall thickness of the pipe or not less than the minimum thickness that will provide a joint assembly with a Hydrostatic Design Basis Category not lower than that of the Hydrostatic Design Basis Category of the pipe.

2.1.3 The wall thickness of the bell end of the pipe may exceed maximum allowable wall thickness of the pipe for a length not to exceed 24 inches from the end of the pipe.

2.1.4 Bell end pipe conforming to the requirements in ASTM Designation: D 2672 may be marked with either ASTM Designation: D 2672 or D 2241. The gasket bell end pipe shall be marked in conformance with the requirements in ASTM Designation: D 2241.

2.1.5 Schedule 40 plastic pipe supply lines shall conform to the requirements in ASTM Designation D1785.

2.1.6 Threaded fittings and fittings to be solvent cemented to plastic pipe supply line shall be injection molded PVC, Schedule 40, conforming to the requirements in ASTM Designation: D 2466.

2.1.7 Solvent cement and primer for PVC plastic pipe and fittings for supply line shall be of commercial quality specifically manufactured for use with rigid PVC plastic pipe and fittings and shall be applied separately. Solvent cement shall conform to the requirements of the local Air Quality Management District. The solvent cement and primer used shall be made by the same manufacturer. The color of the primer shall contrast with the color of the pipe and fittings.

2.1.8 Plastic pipe on the supply side, size 1-1/2” or smaller, of the irrigation control valve shall be Schedule 40, PVC Class 200 solvent weld pipe.

2.1.9 Plastic pipe on the supply side two to three inches (2-3”) shall be Class 315 solvent weld pipe.

2.1.10 Plastic pipe on the supply side four inches (4”) and larger shall be Class 200, PVC Gasket Joint.

2.1.11 Plastic pipe on the discharge side of the irrigation control valve shall be Schedule 40, PVC Class 200 Solvent weld pipe.

2.1.12 Unless otherwise shown on the plans, risers and threaded nipples for irrigation facilities shall be Schedule 80, PVC 1120 or PVC 1220, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe conforming to the requirements in ASTM Designation: D 1785.

2.1.13 Plastic pipe for irrigation systems shall be purple polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic pipe extruded from one hundred percent (100%) virgin material and shall conform to ASTM Designation D2241.

2.1.14 Pipe may also be installed with marking stripe, Pantone 522 embossed or integrally stamped/marked “CAUTION RECLAIMED WATER DO NOT DRINK”.

2.1.15 Pipe may also be installed with a purple identification tape, or a purple polyethylene vinyl wrap, color to be Pantone 512.

2.2 SLEEVING

• Provide separate sleeve beneath hardscape for wiring bundle.

• Sleeve all mainline and sub-mainline piping when it is to be installed above existing potable waterlines. Sleeve for 10-feet each side of potable waterline.

• Provide SDR 11, HDPE pipe or SDR-21 CL200 PVC for wire sleeving.

• Sleeve sizing: twice the diameter of the pipe or wiring bundle.

Sizes: 4-inch and larger

Use rigid, un-plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) 1120, 1220 National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) approved pipe, extruded from material meeting the requirements of Cell Classification 12454-A or 12454-B, ASTM Standard D1784, with an integral belled end.

2.3 TRACER WIRE AND TEST STATIONS

2.3.1 Tracer wire shall be provided for all distribution reclaimed water lines and service laterals and shall be placed on top of pipe and attached with duct tape at 6 feet maximum intervals. At 500 feet intervals, tracer wire shall be extended into separate test stations consisting of risers and valve boxes.

2.3.2 Test lead wire shall be long enough to extend four (4) feet above ground level and shall terminate in test station box. Tracer wire shall be attached to service laterals with duct tape at 3 feet maximum intervals, and shall be long enough to extend four (4) feet above ground and shall terminate in meter box. Wire shall be #12 AWG, insulated, stranded copper, THHN 600V. Prior to acceptance of the reclaimed waterline(s) by the Government, the contractor shall perform a continuity test after backfilling the trench to the satisfaction of the Government Inspector and/or Engineer.

2.4 THRUST BLOCKS

Use thrust blocks on all gasketed mainline pipe and fittings and at dead ends, ells, tees, or changes of direction. Thrust blocks shall be constructed at all direction changes and/or termination points, or at any point of the system that will result in an unbalanced thrust.

Thrust blocks shall be poured against undisturbed earth and in accordance with the drawings and details. Do not obstruct the outlets of fittings that are intended for future.

2.5 JOINT RESTRAINT HARNESS

A harness type assembly for effectively and economically restraining ductile iron pipe connections above or below ground.

2.6 HOSE BIBS

Hose bibs shall not be installed on reclaimed water systems.

2.7 ISOLATION GATE VALVE ASSEMBLY

New and existing isolation valves must be installed in a marked valve box with a recycled water identification tag on the valve operator or, if the valve operator is too deep to reach, at the top of the valve box extension.

2.8 AIR VACUUM RELIEF VALVE ASSEMBLY

As presented in the installation details. Provide a continuous acting combination air vacuum relief valve with an operating pressure rating of 150 PSI.

2.9 FLOW SENSOR ASSEMBLY

As presented in the installation details. Acceptable manufacturer is Data Industrial.

2.10 STEEL PIPE

Steel pipe and couplings and wrought iron couplings shall conform to the requirements in ASTM Designation: A 53, standard weight, galvanized, except that the zinc coating shall

07500-8 Irrigation Specification 2009-09-01 be not less than 90 percent of the amount specified in that ASTM Designation. Fittings, except couplings, shall be galvanized malleable iron, banded and threaded, conforming to the requirements in ANSI Standard: B16.3, Class 150.

2.11 CONDUITS

Conduits shall be sized in accordance with the National Electrical Code with a minimum size of 1½" in diameter. Larger size conduits may be required at the City’s discretion.

2.12 IRRIGATION HEADS

2.12.1 Irrigation heads shall be the type and make specified and shall be installed to curb grade unless otherwise specified. Irrigation heads shall be installed a maximum of four (4) inches and a minimum of two (2) inches from curbs, walls, driveways, building walls, etc. Heads shall be installed in the vertical positions, hand backfilled, and compacted to near original density.

2.12.2 Irrigation head spacing shall not exceed the spacing shown on the drawings and shall be in the approximate locations and configuration as shown on the drawings.

2.12.3 Contractor shall verify area dimensions while staking irrigation head locations. Irrigation heads shall be spaced so that they are equal distance from one another for the given lengths and widths of the area to achieve uniform coverage, unless otherwise state on the irrigation plan.

2.13 SPRINKLER RISER ASSEMBLIES

Risers and elbows shall be Schedule 80 PVC. Adapters shall be Class 1 or 2, PVC Schedule 80. The horizontal nipple shall be Schedule 80. Sprinkler Riser Assemblies shall be constructed as indicated on the drawings.

2.14 SWING JOINT ASSEMBLIES

Swing joint assemblies shall be constructed of Schedule 80 PVC. All joints of swing joint assemblies shall be tightened one (1) turn beyond hand tight.

2.15 FLUSH VALVES

Flush Valves shall conform to the requirement in the Statement of Work and as shown on the plans.

2.16 DETECTABLE UNDERGROUND WARNING TAPE

Detectable Underground Warning Tape shall be buried over irrigation pipe to prevent damage from digging. The tape shall be buried twelve (12) inches above irrigation lines.

All tape shall be printed with black ink on American Public Works Association approved colors to meet or exceed industry standards, and include the words “CAUTION BURIED” at start of legend. Tape shall be 5 mil wide with aluminum backing.

2.17 QUICK COUPLING VALVE

2.17.1 New quick coupling valves shall be three-quarter inch (3/4”) in size and of brass construction with a maximum working pressure of 150 psi. The covers on all new quick coupling valves must be permanently attached and made of purple rubber or vinyl with the words “RECYCLED WATER” imprinted on the locking cover. To prevent unauthorized use, the valve must only be operated by a special coupler key for opening and closing the valve.

2.17.2 New quick coupling valves shall be installed a maximum of twelve inches (12”) from inside concrete walks, curbs, header boards or paved areas. Quick coupling valves used in the recycled water system must be installed in a valve box and a recycled water identification tag must be permanently attached to the quick coupling valve or the inside of the box so that it is clearly visible when the box lid is removed. The quick coupling valve shall be stabilized using a 3/8” diameter twenty-four inches long piece of rebar to prevent unthreading when the quick coupler key is turned on and off.

2.17.3 Any wands, sprinkler heads, fittings, or other attachments used in conjunction with the quick coupling valves must be labeled with the words, “RECYCLED WATER—DO NOT DRINK.” Attachments used in a recycled water system must not be used in a potable water system.

2.17.4 New quick coupling valves shall be housed in new nine (9) inch round purple valve boxes with purple lids.

2.18 QUICK COUPLER KEYS

Quick coupler keys shall be red brass and stainless steel construction. All quick coupler keys shall come with a hose swivel attachment. See Exhibit A.

2.19 REMOTE CONTROL VALVES

2.19.1 All remote control valves for onsite recycled water systems must be installed below grade in a valve box. Only purple valve boxes and lids are acceptable. Valve boxes must have an advisory label or “nameplate” permanently molded into or affixed onto the lid with rivets, bolts, etc. Labels must be constructed of a purple weatherproof material with the wording “RECYCLED WATER—DO NOT DRINK— permanently stamped or molded into the label.

2.19.2 Control valves shall be electric remote control or the manual type, straight or angle pattern globe valves, and shall be of glass filled nylon, brass, bronze, or cast iron construction as shown on the plans or specified in the special provisions. All metal parts of glass filled nylon valves shall be stainless steel or brass. Cast iron bodied valves shall have replaceable, nonferrous, metallic seats. Compression disks or diaphragms in valves shall be replaceable. Valves shall be of the same size as the pipeline which the valves serve, unless otherwise shown on the plans. Control valves shall be capable of withstanding a cold water working pressure of 150 psi. Valve handles shall be brass, bronze or steel.

2.19.3 Electric remote control valves shall conform to the following:

• Valves shall be normally closed type.

• Valves shall be completely serviceable from the top without removing the valve body from the system.

• Valves shall be equipped with a device that will regulate and adjust the flow of water and shall be provided with a manual shutoff. The manual shutoff for valves larger than 3/4 inch shall be operated by a cross handle.

• Valves for each irrigation controller shall be the same model series and shall be compatible with the model series of the irrigation controller.

• Valve solenoids shall operate on the low voltage AC current supplied from the irrigation controller.

• Valves shall be provided with manual bleeding devices.

• Valves shall be equipped with internal diaphragms installed in the valve body casting.

• Valve inlets and outlets shall have threaded fittings.

2.20 VALVE BOXES

2.20.1 All remote control valves, isolation valves, pressure reducing valves, and strainers for onsite recycled water systems shall be installed below grade in a valve box. Only purple valve boxes and lids are acceptable.

2.20.2 Valve boxes must have an advisory label or “nameplate” permanently molded into or affixed onto the lid with rivets, bolts, etc. Labels must be constructed of a purple weatherproof material with the wording “RECYCLED WATER—DO NOT DRINK—”

07500-11 Irrigation Specification 2009-09-01 permanently stamped or molded into the label. Valve boxes and valve box covers shall be precast Portland cement concrete, fiberglass or reinforced plastic and shall conform to the Statement of Work.

2.20.3 Valve boxes shall not have side openings.

2.21 BACKFLOW PREVENTERS

If applicable, these devices must be tagged with a recycled water identification tag.

2.22 CONCRETE

Concrete for irrigation facilities, unless otherwise specified, shall be produced from commercial quality aggregates and cement and shall contain not less than 463 pounds of cement per cubic yard. Hand mixing of the concrete will be permitted.

2.23 GATE VALVES

Gate valves shall be either flanged, threaded or ring type, iron or bronze body, bronze trimmed valves with rising (internally threaded) or non-rising stem, and shall withstand a cold water working pressure of 150 psi. Gate valves shall be of the same size as the pipeline which the valves serve, unless otherwise shown on the plans.

2.24 UNIONS

Unions shall be brass or malleable iron. Unions shall withstand the working pressure range provisions for the pipes with which the unions are used.

2.25 WYE STRAINERS

a. Wye strainers shall have a cast iron or all-bronze body with a removable stainless steel or monel strainer. Wye strainers shall be capable of withstanding a cold water working pressure of 150 psi. Wye strainers at backflow preventer assemblies shall be equipped with a gate valve at the outlet. All other wye strainers shall be equipped with a garden valve at the outlet.

b. The strainer screen for the wye strainer in a backflow preventer assembly shall have an open area equal to at least 3 times the cross-sectional area of the pipe based on an iron pipe size and shall be 20-mesh woven wire mesh or perforated sheet with 0.045-inch diameter holes.

c. All other wye strainers shall be equipped with 40-mesh strainer screens.

2.26 IRRIGATION CONTROLLERS

2.26.1 Irrigation controllers shall conform to the provisions specified herein and the Statement of Work.

2.26.2 Irrigation controllers shall operate on 120-V, 60 Hz AC, and shall supply 24-V to 30-V, 60 Hz AC for operating electric remote control valves.

2.26.3 Irrigation controllers shall be housed in pedestal or wall-mounted enclosures as designated in the Engineer's Estimate, or as specified in the special provisions or as shown on the plans.

2.26.4 Irrigation controllers not installed in irrigation controller enclosure cabinets shall be weatherproof, shall be constructed of fiberglass or metal and shall have a door lock for which 2 keys shall be provided.

2.27 TRENCHES

2.27.1 Trenches shall be straight with vertical sides and smooth bottoms, with a consistent and even laying grade and depth that follows the contour of the surface.

2.27.2 Provide a minimum twenty-four inches (24") of soil cover for all pressure lines three inches (3") in diameter and larger. Mulches are not considered soil cover.

2.27.3 Provide a minimum of eighteen-inches (18") of soil cover for all pressure supply lines less than three-inches (3") in diameter and all non-pressure lines. Mulches are not considered soil cover.

2.27.4 Provide a minimum twenty-four inches (24”) will ring cover for all control wiring. If in the same trench as a water line, attach to the water main at fifteen-foot intervals (see details of these Standard Specifications).

2.27.5 Provide a minimum twenty-four inches (24”) of cover for all sleeves crossing pavement and drives, and extend a minimum of twelve-inches (12”) past edge of concrete, asphalt or other finish surface ways into the planting area.

2.27.6 All trenches shall be wide enough to permit easy access for installing pipe, wire, etc. and allow enough width for snaking of PVC pipe, to allow for expansion and contraction.

Trench width shall be a minimum of 2-1/2 times the size of the pipe.

2.27.7 Daily trench excavation shall be limited by the amount of pipe laying that can be completed that day or as is permitted by the City Engineer. Excavated material shall be stored in a manner that will not endanger pedestrians, the work and will avoid obstructing the traveled right-of-way, sidewalks and driveways. Open trenches and mounds of dirt and debris will be so marked and lighted as to provide safety to pedestrians and vehicles.

2.27.8 Any open excavations along a sidewalk or other type of public travel way shall be plated or covered and barricaded as necessary to prevent access to the area.

2.27.9 Trenches shall be of sufficient width to permit snaking in of all plastic piping in bottom of trench not connected by ring or gasket joint pipe. Pipe connected with ring or gasket joint pipe need not be snaked.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.0.1 Plastic pipe, including fittings, shall be installed according to the Manufacturer’s directions and as directed by the Engineer.

3.0.2 Concrete thrust blocking shall be Portland Cement Concrete and shall conform to the concrete specification.

3.0.3 Installation of irrigation and non-potable pipe shall be as shown on the plans and in accordance with these specifications.

3.0.4 Installation shall be in the location indicated on the plans and shall conform to the drawings in the Standard Details of these Specifications, unless shown and approved otherwise on the plans.

3.0.5 The quantity of concrete used shall be sufficient to provide adequate monolithic bracing against undisturbed soil.

3.0.6 Plastic irrigation pipe shall be placed in trenches on level, undisturbed or well compacted earth and shall be snaked from side to side in the trench at intervals of approximately fifty feet (50’). Pipe shall be held down between joints with minimal mounds of earth to adequately prevent movement.

3.0.7 Foreign material shall be prevented from entering the irrigation system during installation. Immediately prior to assembling all pipes, valves and fittings, all valves shall be plugged or capped pending the attachment of additional pipe or fittings. All lines shall be thoroughly flushed out prior to attachment of terminal fittings.

3.0.8 Pipe shall be cut with a fine tooth hacksaw and all burrs removed. The outside surface of the pipe and the inside surface of the fittings shall be wiped with a clean cloth to remove all dirt and moisture before the cement solution is applied. The cement solutions shall be applied to the pipe and fitting socket with a brush having a width approximately three-quarters (3/4) of the depth of the socket. The cement solution shall be applied freely with a light wiping acting to spread the cement uniformly over the surface. The pipe surfaces or fitting socket shall not be rubbed with the brush any more than is necessary to spread the cement. If the cement thickens before parts are connected, the coated fittings shall be discarded. Solvent weld connections on the supply side of valves shall first be cleaned with Weld-on Solvent No. 660, or equal. Cement solution shall be Weldon Solvent No.

715, or approved equal.

3.0.9 Immediately after the cement has been applied to the surface to be joined, the pipe shall be inserted into the fitting with a twisting motion to the full depth on the fitting socket.

Immediately after joining is completed, any excess cement shall be thoroughly wiped from the pipe and fitting. The jointed members shall be allowed to cure for at least five

(5) minutes before they are handled. An additional fitting or pipe section may be added to

07500-14 Irrigation Specification 2009-09-01 the completed joint within three (3) minutes if care is exercised in handling so that strain is not placed on the previous joint.

3.0.10 The male pipe threads of all threaded connections on PVC plastic pipe shall be coated with a joint compound suitable for use with plastic pipe.

3.1 TESTING OF NON - IRRIGATION SYSTEM

3.1.1 After laying and before backfill and compaction, irrigation mains and laterals shall be tested for leakage and for sprinkler coverage.

3.1.2 Authorized Department of Health Services personnel shall monitor and record all pressure testing.

• Leakage Test for Irrigation Main: Mains shall be tested and proven watertight under hydrostatic pressure at 150 lbs per square inch. Sustain pressure in lines for at least two (2) hours without pressure drop. If pressure drop occurs within two

(2) hours, identify and replace deficient area and repeat test until such time as no pressure drop occurs. The Contractor shall provide the necessary pump and other testing equipment required for this test. The test gauge shall be a sealed oil filled gauge.

• Leakage Test for Irrigation Laterals: Laterals shall be tested as specified above, except that the test period shall be a minimum of one (1) hour. The pipe shall be plugged or capped where sprinklers are to be installed while making this test.

• Sprinkler Coverage Test: The risers for sprinklers on slopes shall be set approximately perpendicular to the slope. Each series of sprinklers shall be installed and test operated. Nozzles of all sprinklers and bubblers shall be adjusted for proper rate of flow and coverage. Sprinklers or bubblers shall be relocated as required to produce uniform coverage.

3.2 BACKFILL OF IRRIGATION PIPELINES

3.2.1 All lumber, rubbish, and rocks shall be removed from trenches and backfill material.

Ensure that the pipe will have a firm, uniform bearing for the entire length of each pipeline, to prevent uneven settlement.

3.2.2 In rocky areas, the pipe shall be laid on a minimum of four inches (4") of sand and covered with four inches (4") of sand to prevent rock damage to pipe. The pipe shall then be covered fourteen (14) inches of soil to obtain the minimum soil coverage of eighteen

(18) inches of soil.

3.2.3 Trenches shall not be backfilled until all required tests are performed, then carefully backfilled after pipe and wire have been installed. Excavated materials approved for backfilling, consist of earth, loam, sandy clay, and sand, free from large clods or stones.

All backfill shall be compacted by mechanical compaction method to the same relative compaction as the surrounding soil. Backfill shall be mechanically compacted in landscaped areas to a dry density equal to adjacent undisturbed soil in planting areas.

Backfill shall conform to adjacent grades without dips, sunken areas, humps, or other surface irregularities.

3.2.4 A fine granular material backfill shall be initially placed on all lines. No foreign matter larger than one-half inch (1/2") in size shall be permitted in the initial backfill.

3.2.5 If settlement occurs and subsequent adjustments in pipe, valves, sprinkler heads, planting, or other construction are necessary, the Contractor shall make all required adjustments without cost to the Government.

3.2.6 The top six inches (6") of backfill in planting areas and shall consist of select excavated material, free of rocks, debris, vegetative material, and other unsuitable material.

3.2.7 Backfill in street sections shall be per Government Standards. Special backfill requirements may be set forth and noted on the plans as approved by the Government Engineer.

3.3 RE-PAVING

Re-paving over trenches shall be as specified in these Standard Specifications, unless otherwise shown and approved on the plans.

3.4 GUARANTEE

The sprinkler system shall be guaranteed for a period of one (1) year from date of final acceptance by the Government. Should any trouble develop within the time specified above due to faulty workmanship or materials, the problem shall be corrected by the Contractor, without expense to the Government.

Any settling of backfilled trenches during the one (1) year period after acceptance shall be repaired by the Contractor, at no expense to the Government, including the restoration of all damaged property.

3.5 RECORD DRAWINGS

The Contractor shall furnish the Engineer with “As-Built” Record drawings showing any changed or differing site conditions, locations and depths of pipes and valves, etc. The irrigation system will not be accepted until “As-Built” Record drawings are furnished and accepted by the Government.

3.6 FINAL CLEAN UP

Before final inspection of the work, the Contractor shall clean the material sites and all ground occupied by the Contractor in connection with the work of all rubbish, excess materials, false work, temporary structures and equipment. All parts of the work shall be left in a neat and presentable condition. Full compensation for final cleaning up will be considered as included in the prices paid for the various contract items of work and no separate payment will be made therefore.
