QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
VoIP Capable Telephone System
Humboldt National Wildlife Refuge
1. Does the HBNWR have iPhone/iPad (iOS) users that bring their devices to the office (BYOD, or “bring your own device”) that would simply like to dock their smartphone into a docking station just like they do for their laptops on the network? Once docked in the cradle, the employee’s iOS smartphone is auto connected to the phone system just like any other VoIP telephone set. This iOS docking station would also charge the iPhone/iPad device as well as allow the employee to use an integrated dial pad, speakerphone and handset just as they would a traditional phone set. And, when the employee is on a phone call and needs to hit the road, he/she simple picks up the iPhone/Pad out of the cradle to continue the conversation.
• This is not a requirement of the telephone system at this time.
2. Please identify specifically what type of circuits connection you wish the proposed telephone system to be equipped with (i.e. circuit type you intend to order from the LEC):
• Central Office (C.O.) analog POTS lines
3. Will the extension subscribers require DID (direct inward dialing) phone numbers? A DID number will allow someone outside to call an employee’s telephone set directly (i.e.
bypassing an attendant or auto attendant).
• No
4. Please identify the type (e.g. Cat 3, Cat 5, Cat 5e, etc.) of existing cabling. Since the HBNWR desires to equip the system with VoIP telephone sets, the wiring will need to be a minimum of Cat 5e.
• Refuge currently uses CAT 5 cable. However, the bandwidth at the refuge is not currently capable of supporting the requested VOIP system. Phone system shall be capable of operating over the current telephone connection and be VOIP capable when bandwidth in the area improves.
5. Regarding the statement: “one (1) analog station expandable to two (2) ports to integrate cordless phones and fax machine,”; Please clarify/confirm that the HBNWR is requesting the phone system to be equipped with two (2) quantity analog station ports.
• We have a fax line that goes directly to the machine. It can stay as is or be upgraded
6. Regarding the statement: “2.30. Two incoming lines with ring and/or appear option,”:
Please confirm/clarify that 2-line telephone sets (i.e. that provide for 2 outside line appearances) will be acceptable (i.e. including all other capabilities listed from 2.14 – 2.40).
• We would like two “attendant” type phones that have all extensions and show whether they are free or busy.
7. Please identify whether the phone system controller will be rack or wall mounted.
• Wall mount would probably be more feasible.
8. If the phone system controller will be rack mounted, please confirm that the vendor will need to provide the equipment rack.
• See above.
9. Please identify whether or not a Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) will be required to support the phone system and if so, how many backup hours will be required.
• Should a UPS be necessary, refuge will purchase separately.
10. Please identify how many of the telephone sets need to be wall mounted.
• None.
11. Please identify if there are any existing paging speakers (e.g. ceiling speakers) that the phone system will need to interface with
• None.
12. Will the HBNWR require a “central answering position”, attendant type phone set, i.e.
equipped with additional keys that support busy lamp field (BLF) and DSS (Direct Station Selection)?
• Yes.
13. Will the HBNWR require any soft phones and if so how many? Softphones allow a mobile user to launch an application on their laptop that they use with a headset to make/receive phone calls from anywhere they have access to the internet. Unlike just call forwarding to a cell phone, this functionality provides total integration with the phone system so the user can leverage features like caller ID, transfer, conferencing, etc.
• No.
14. Will the HBNWR require iPhone or Android connectivity? This app to support BYOD (bring your own device), will allow a mobile user that has the app loaded on their smartphone to be connected to the office phone system with all of the same capabilities as their office telephone set. Unlike just call forwarding to a cell phone, this functionality provides total integration with the phone system so the user can leverage features like caller ID, transfer, conferencing, etc.
• No.
