SECTION 2 – INVASIVE PLANT CONTROL/REMOVAL

The area to be treated is undeveloped land owned by the Flour Bluff Independent School District (FBISD)

2.1 PROJECT SITE: Fiy-one (51) acres – Undeveloped land owned by FBISD

A. General Descripon of Area: The area is 51 acres in size, including a 10-acre saltwater pond, 1-acre freshwater pond, and 40 acres of upland. The site contains approximately 30 acres of Brazilian peppertree and other invasive plant species (described in SECTION 1).

Along with all mature trees and stands, smaller tree/shrubs and saplings must also be treated. Invasive grasses, such as guinea grass, should be treated, as well. The property is located at the intersecon of Laguna Shores Road and Hustlin Hornet Drive (Appendix A).

B. Removal/Treatment Methods: Below are the methods approved for this property:

1. Cut Stump: Woody species can be controlled by cung the trunk as low to the ground as possible. Sawdust and other debris must be removed from the fresh cut stump. Within 5 minutes, an herbicide containing triclopyr should be applied to the thin layer of living ssue (cambium) which is just inside the bark of the stump.

A paraffin-based petroleum oil surfactant with nonionic emulsifiers, such as Agri- Dex, should be mixed with the herbicide to increase effecveness.

a. Chemical: 25% Garlon 4 Ultra, 75% Agri-Dex (or equivalent with approval).

b. Spray Indicator Dye

c. Disposal: Trees/limbs will be mulched and le on-site.

2. Foliar Applicaon for Small Trees/Saplings: Herbicide should be applied directly to the foliage and will be translocated throughout the plant. A parrafin-based petroleum oil surfactant with nonionic emulsifiers, such as Agri-Dex, should be mixed with the herbicide to increase effectiveness. Coverage is essenal and this method is only suitable for control of small trees/saplings less than 2 feet in height.

a. Chemical: 4% Garlon 4 Ultra, 4% Agri-Dex, 92% Water (or equivalent with approval).

b. Spray Indicator Dye

c. Herbicide applicaon cannot be completed when winds are over 10 mph as gusng winds allow for overspray, increasing the likelihood of nave plant impacts; high winds increase evaporaon rates of herbicide, reducing treatment success.

3. Foliar Applicaon for Grasses: Herbicide should be applied directly to the foliage and will be translocated throughout the plant. Coverage is essenal to maximize the effecveness of this treatment.

a. Chemical: 3% Glyphosate, 0.5% Agri-Dex, 96.5% Water (or equivalent with approval).

b. Spray Indicator Dye

c. Herbicide applicaon cannot be completed when winds are over 10 mph as gusng winds allow for overspray, increasing the likelihood of nave plant impacts; high winds increase evaporaon rates of herbicide, reducing treatment success.

4. Addional Informaon

a. All herbicide applicaons must include a spray indicator dye (e.g., Hi- Light Blue Spray Indicator) and be mixed per product specimen label instrucons for chosen applicaon.

C. TREES/GRASSES – All idenfied invasive trees, saplings, and grasses located within the 51-acre boundary must be treated. The contractor is responsible for selecng the most appropriate treatment described above for the specific areas treated.

D. WOODY DEBRIS – Woody debris will be mulched and le on-site.

2.4 DESIRABLE SPECIES

A. NATIVE SPECIES - Numerous desirable trees exist within the boundary area (e.g. honey mesquite, live oak, yaupon holly, retama, etc.) and care should be taken to avoid damage to these trees during inial clearing and to avoid herbicide dri to non-target nave plants during treatment. Nave grasses, herbs, and shrubs should be avoided, as well.

2.5 SITE ACCESS

A. Vehicles and equipment are allowed along paved roads and pathways. Care should be taken to minimize impacts to habitats off these paved areas. Ruts and soil disturbance caused by Contractor vehicle usage shall be migated by the Contractor.

B. Wetland habitat is extremely delicate and vulnerable. Care must be taken so that minimal disturbance is achieved.

C. All vehicle access is restricted from being on or accessing any poron of the wetland areas. All isolated trees/grasses requiring treatment and traversing sand/mud flats or wetlands shall be accessed by foot only.
