Explanation Following the recent release of the annual local report card, it's clear that additional work must be done to improve math proficiency across the state. The Department has identified work to better support teachers in instruction and supports that help students into and succeed in Algebra 2 equivalent courses aligned to career interests as an opportunity to leverage expiring federal COVID relief funds.
The work included in this contract includes raising awareness of Algebra 2 equivalent courses, identifying middle school and high school barriers to successful implementation and participation in those courses, develop courses and materials for regional facilitators, and establish a network of professionals to lead this effort as the workforce demands and degree program demands change over time.
The Educational Service Center of Central Ohio (ESCCO) will work with other ESCs and subcontractors to facilitate the following in order to develop and facilitate this work. provide guidance and support to best prepare schools and districts post ESSER.
Communication Strategy - Ensure schools and districts are aware of the equivalency courses.
Community of Practice- To develop shared expertise between educators and school leaders. One community of practice will work with middle school educators and the other three will be aligned to each specific Algebra 2 equivalent course.
Landscape Analysis - Data will be utilized to inform recruitment for the regional workshops and major convening which will also be included in a landscape analysis to be delivered to the Department in FY 2025. This landscape will help identify the barriers at the middle school and high school level to supporting students in Algebra 2 equivalent courses.
Course Development - Previously developed materials will be compiled to finalize courses along with facilitator guides to direct trainings.
This one time expense will allow for Ohio schools and districts to sustain services to students initiated with ESSER funds well beyond the expiration of the funding source.
Please Note: A second request will be submitted for Controlling Board approval in spring 2025 for work that will occur from 7/1/25-12/31/25. The Department is seeking late liquidation from the U.S.
Department of Education to fund this work. The amount of the contract in FY2026 will total $206,640.00.
