Questions and Answers
Q: It is my understanding that there are nearly 150,000 miles of rail for which we would code in tonnage and other attributes. Do you have an idea of the scale at which this data is typically provided? For instance, If there were different data attributes for every mile, we would need to code in 150,000 segments individually. As class 1 trains obviously travel more than 1 mile in between stops, I am not expecting this to be the case. However, I'd like to get an idea if we would be coding in chunks of 10 miles, 20 miles, 30 miles, etc. I just want to get a sense of the data effort for our hours / fees estimates.
A: The raw is based on the railroads division and subdivisions. Changes of the information usually occur at interchange locations. The “chucks” could be on 5 miles or to 100 miles. No other attributes will be coding into the network, only the million gross tons.
