PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

The surface conditions indicated in the contract drawings and in the specifications are the result of site surveys, probes, borings, laboratory tests. Logs of explorations, laboratory test results, and locations at the site where subsurface investigations were performed can be found at the link provided below. Boring locations are shown on Contract Drawing sheet G-002.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District (USACE-NAE) and its contractors Ocean Survey, Inc. (OSI) and GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) conducted geotechnical investigations of areas of Portsmouth Harbor shown in the contract drawings during 2006 and 2007 (see OSI's "Final Report, Marine Geophysical Investigation, Navigation Channel Improvement Project, Piscataqua River, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, OSI Report No. 06ES102-NH"), and 2016 (see GZA's "Report of Geotechnical Explorations, Portsmouth

Harbor Turning Basin and Piscataqua River Subsurface Investigation, Newington, NH and Eliot, ME, October 4, 2016", performed for USACE-NAE by

GZA). Bathymetry data were collected by USACE-NAE.

An independent geotechnical investigation was conducted by the

Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and its contractor Louis Berger in 2017 (See Louis Berger's "Suitability

Assessment of Piscataqua River Sand Source for Nourishment of Nantasket

Beach"). USACE-NAE was not party to the Louis Berger work and had no input to the scoping, execution, review, or conclusions of the report.

1.5 SOIL AND ROCK CLASSIFICATION

Soil classification was performed in accordance with ASTM D2488 in the field and ASTM D2487 in the laboratory.

The generalized Portsmouth Harbor stratigraphy is presented in Section

5.0, Table 2, and Figures 4 and 5 of the 2016 GZA GeoEnvironmental Report of Geotechnical Explorations.

For dredging purposes the materials listed below are defined as "Ordinary

Material".

From youngest to oldest these materials include: Glaciomarine Clay;

Glaciofluvial/Glaciomarine Outwash; and Glacial Till.

SECTION 00 32 00 Page 4

Glaciomarine Clay is of Pleistocene age and is a lean clay with sand or gravel with low N values indicative of very soft to soft clay. The glaciomarine clay is equivalent to the Presumpscot Formation which is a gray and blue-gray (weathering brown) silt, clay, and sand deposited on the sea floor, and ranges from massive to laminated silt and clay that occurs as a blanket deposit over bedrock and older glacial sediments. The Presumpscot Formation may locally contain boulders, sand, and gravel.

Glaciofluvial/Glaciomarine Outwash is of Pleistocene age and is a stratified sand and gravel deposit consisting of fine to coarse sand with fine gravel and silt ranging from loose to very dense. The glaciofluvial/glaciomarine outwash is equivalent to on-shore units mapped in Maine as Marine Regressive Sand Deposits and is described as massive to stratified and cross-stratified, well-sorted, brown to gray-brown sand.

Glacial Till is of Pleistocene age and consists of dense silty gravel and sand. The material has been describes as a poorly sorted mixture of silt, sand, clay, cobbles and boulders, typically not stratified.

For dredging purposes the rock materials listed below are defined as "Hard

Material".

From youngest to oldest these materials include Basalt and Phyllite of the Eliot Formation.

Basalt consists of isolated, intrusive, dikes and/or sills of altered basalt. Basalt dikes have been mapped nearby on-shore within the Eliot Formation.

Phyllite consists of altered carbonate-sericite-quartz schist. The phyllite was described as gray, hard, fresh to slightly weathered, and fine grained. Discontinuities were closely to very closely spaced, ranging from low to high angle with some vertical joints. Joint surfaces ranged from planar and smooth to stepped and rough. Joint surface weathering ranged from fresh to discolored and apertures ranged from tight to open. The Eliot Formation consists of gray to green phyllite, calcareous quartzite, quartz-mica schist, and well bedded calc-silicate.

1.6 INTERPRETATION

Subsurface investigation data are provided only for information purposes and for the convenience of the Contractor. The data shown on the boring logs are for the specific locations indicated only and no assurance is given that these conditions are representative of conditions between borings or areas adjacent thereto. The responsibility lies with the

Contractor to interpret subsurface conditions that may affect the work.

1.7 LABORATORY SOIL TESTS

Laboratory tests of soils were generally performed in accordance with the following test methods:

SECTION 00 32 00 Page 5

a. Particle-Size Analysis: ASTM D422.

b. Atterberg Limits: ASTM D4318.

c. Classification of Soils for Engineering Purposes (Unified Soil Classification System): ASTM D2487.
