About this file
This document is a Timber Sale Prescription from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for the North Riley Red Pine Alley 4 Timber Sale. The sale covers approximately 413.4 acres across multiple stands located in Alger County, Michigan. The contract work can begin immediately and must be completed by 9/01/2024. The prescription details the treatment objectives, which include crown thinning of planted red pine stands and a clearcut of one stand. Boundary lines must be established and GPS'd, and all stands must be marked. Cruising will be completed by DNR staff. Specific marking instructions are provided, including prioritizing removal of large red pine, suppressed/damaged trees, and other undesirable species. Paint color requirements and GPS deliverables are also specified.
The contract opportunity is for the paint line and area calculations, as well as the tree marking work described in the prescription. Pricing terms, set-asides, and funding sources are not provided. The DNR will supply the paint, and the contractor's work schedule must coincide with the DNR's availability for paint delivery.

PRESCRIPTION
Establish all boundary lines and GPS all Stands and Units. Mark all Stands. Cruising will be completed by DNR staff.
When marking, prioritize selection of trees to be cut in the following order:
1. Target basal area of 120 sq. ft. Focus on even spacing of residual trees.
2. Remove red pine 17 inches or greater at DBH.
3. Remove suppressed trees, damaged trees, and deformed trees.
4. Create a ½ chain buffer, marking all trees within this buffer, in areas that exhibit red pine pocket mortality. A GPS location must be submitted for all areas containing red pine pocket mortality.
5. Remove jack pine and aspen, where present.
6. Marking should be adjusted in areas that exhibit tight rows and operability is a concern. Reach out to the Local
Contact for details.
Reserved Species:
• Do not mark hemlock and oak, if present.
• Do not mark within 100’ of any raptor nest trees. Report these to the Local Contact as soon as possible and directions will be given at that time.

Additional information:
Old yellow and red paint are present since the sale was harvested less than 10 years ago. An effort should be made to locate the sale boundary and unit boundaries on existing trees containing old paint. If not possible, or if the line needs to change locations, an above average amount of yellow paint should be used to differentiate the new yellow line from the old yellow line.
Standards for marking lines against private land:
Establish 500 feet of exterior line against private as illustrated on the attached map. The corners have been set. The paint line must be within 10 feet of the actual property line.
