Maintain Unimproved Road Shoulders and Grade
SECTION 01 10 00
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
PART 1 - DESCRIPTION OF WORK
1.1
1.2
BACKGROUND: The Park has approximately 38 miles of unpaved fire roads that need to be maintained on a regular basis. Storms and normal wear and tear cause ruts and unraveling of the surface material making it hazardous for bicyclist and hikers. The roads crew is short staffed and does not have enough people to properly maintain the roads and can only address bad spots on an emergency basis.
The goal of this project is to grade the roads and add material where needed to promote positive drainage. This will improve accessibility for visitors and employees and emergency services throughout the park. It will also address deferred maintenance. This contract will consist of grading approximately 3.5 miles of road, Marincello, Haypress, and Fox trail in Mill Valley, and approximately 2,000 Linear Feet (LF) of shoulder repair along Bunker Road in Sausalito. See maps attached.
1.2.1 The contractor will re-establish ditch lines using a motor grader to recontour the ditches, using the material to fill ruts and grade the surface smooth with a motor grader, wet and compact to a hardened surface that allows drainage. The park will provide material from an approved vendor (Mark West Quarry in Santa Rosa) that will be used to fill low areas and place a cap of approximately 2 inches on the roads, that will be watered and compacted to a hard surface. Contractor will use up to 750 tons of Mayacama Red (3/4” Minus) on the roads and up to 50 tons on the shoulders and will be responsible for hauling the material. Work site will be level or smoothed to the extent possible for visitor use, keeping existing slope for drainage. Contractor will be required to make final grade with a motor grader to achieve a uniform smooth finish. Road width will vary and contractor will match existing.
1.2.2 As an option item, the contractor will grade approximately an additional mile of road.
1.3 All work will be performed under a single contract.
