About this file
This document is an Application Packet (Attachment B) for Request for Grant Application (RFGA) No. BPM000338, submitted by Arizona State University. The document details a budget information proposal involving Hyunglae Lee, Ph.D., from the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, and a to-be-determined graduate student.
The proposal outlines a three-year project budget totaling $225,000, divided into equal annual periods of $75,000 from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2022. The budget covers senior personnel costs for Dr. Lee (totaling $29,548), a graduate student's salary ($64,291), and various other direct costs including materials and supplies, consulting costs, human subject payments, a subaward to Midwestern, and tuition remission. The project appears to focus on developing a patient-adaptive robotic balance training program, involving human experiments, data analysis, and research presentation. Personnel costs include estimated escalations consistent with ASU policy, with effort calculations based on academic/employment contract periods.

Senior Personnel * The principal investigator, Hyunglae Lee, Ph.D., holds a 9 month academic year appointment in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy at Arizona State University. Funds are budgeted to provide Dr. Lee 1 month/0.89 month/0.7 months of salary support for each year of the proposed project at an hourly rate of $64.13, totaling $29,548 over 3 years. Dr. Lee will be responsible for overall planning of the project and will be involved in mentoring one graduate student. He will also spend a substantial fraction of his research effort to develop a patient-adaptive robotic balance training program and to perform data analysis.
Other Personnel * One TBD Graduate Student will be hired full time over 9 academic months at 20 hours per week (FTE 4.5 months) and will work half time over the 3 month summer term at 20 hours per week (FTE 1.5 months). The hourly rate of the student is $20/hour, totaling $64,291 over 3 years. This student will help development of the proposed robotic approach, run human experiments, and perform data analysis. The student will also help with the presentation of the research outcomes at scientific meetings and in scientific manuscripts relating to the project.
Note: 20 hours per week is considered 100% effort for graduate students during the academic year
* Note: An estimated cost escalation has been included on personnel costs in the out years, consistent with ASU policy. Estimates of hours and/or hourly rates are furnished solely for the purpose of this proposal.
Arizona State University employees commit a percent of their effort to a sponsored project. The percent of effort is based on appointment/employment contract period (numbers of hours per academic/fiscal year) and thus labor rates are calculated as such and are rounded to two decimal places. Rates are subject to annual adjustments reflecting changes in salary and/or Federally-negotiated fringe benefit or indirect cost rates.
