About this file
This document is a Task Assignment Notification Form and Multi-Year Project Request from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) awarded to the University of Georgia Research Foundation for a research project investigating Avian Vacuolar Myelinopathy (AVM) in Florida. The contract (FWC Contract No. 16074) involves researchers from the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, with primary investigators including Susan B. Wilde and Mike Netherland from the Center for Invasive and Aquatic Plants.
The project focuses on researching the ecological risks associated with Aetokthonos hydrillicola, a cyanobacteria linked to mortality in freshwater vertebrates, particularly its association with the invasive aquatic plant Hydrilla verticillata. The research aims to understand the bacteria's distribution, toxicity, and impact on wildlife, especially snail kites and bald eagles. The contract is structured as a fixed-price agreement with a total task assignment value of $20,000, covering a three-year period from 2018 to 2020. Research objectives include sampling various lakes, evaluating toxin concentrations, creating site-specific and regional risk assessment models, and developing management recommendations for water resource and wildlife managers in Florida.

Research Efforts and Results:
1. Continue hydrilla and other SAV sampling from known Ah positive sites including
Tohopekeliga, East Lake Toho, Hatchineha, Cypress, Kissimmee, Istokpoga, and Ah negative sites including Okeechobee, and Stormwater Treatment Areas to assess water quality, water chemistry, seasonal levels of Hydrilla/Aetokthonos hydrillicola, and AVM toxin
2. Evaluate samples using remote sensing, microscopy, Zebrafish and HPLC
3. Determine locations at highest risk for AVM disease using density of Hydrilla/Ah and concentration of AVM toxin
4. Work with FFWCC, UF, and Audubon personnel to process and submit waterfowl, eagles, and snail kites for AVM histological analysis
5. Create site specific models of AVM risk assessment based on prevalence of hydrilla, water/sediment quality, A. hydrillicola, AVM toxin concentration and bird health.
