NSWC IHD Performance Work Statement
Purchase of a CamSizer Particle Size & Particle Shape Analyzer
This contract will detail the procurement of a CamSizer X2 XJET System for use with and in support of multiple Office of Naval Research (ONR) funded naval prototypes and congressional programs related to reactive materials. The particle size and shape analyzer will be purchased by NSWC IHD via contract.
The instrument purchased in this contract is a CamSizer X2 XJET System (110-120V, 60Hz) which includes LED light sources, dual-CCD camera (310 images/second with 4.2 Megapixels per camera), dust and vibration control housing and vacuum, a calibration reticle with calibration certificate, PC operating system and all related software, universal XDRY module, and sample prep splitter. The CamSizer XJET configuration will include a universal dry module with vibrational feeder (110-120V), feed hopper, and hopper holder (D30, SS, 0.5L), as well as an air pressure dispersion mode with adjustable high pressure cartridge (5kPa to 460 kPa), standard SS dispersion nozzle (14mm x 4mm), feed chute and chute holder, and a vacuum with all required accessories. In addition to the physical instrument, this contract will include the basic installation and training service.
This service needs to be performed in-person by a trained CamSizer service engineer.
This purchase will be used for a number of reactive material programs, as it provides shape and size of particles that contribute to combustion reactions of interest. Particle shape and size are significant to the understanding of reactive material combustion regimes, which feeds directly into NSWC IHD high-fidelity modeling programs. Full understanding of material properties directly impacts performance and is imperative for future material applications. The specific CamSizer model described in this contract mimics the system used by our collaborators, The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). The intense workloads of NPS employees combined with the demanding sample sizes provided by NSWC IHD has made it difficult to coordinate analysis of reactive materials. Purchasing a CamSizer for use in-house at
NSWC IHD will ensure timely data analysis and remove the need to ship sensitive samples off site. The
NPS method of reactive material particle analysis is preferred by both the Navy and the sponsor, ONR.
No other entities have been able to provide a full particle size spectrum of collected unreacted fragments with such rigor. This will also aid in other materials-related research investigating particle size and shapes. Specifically, failure analysis investigations could benefit greatly from this instrument.
This contract includes both supplies and service purchases. Procuring this equipment in FY21 is crucial to ensure the progress of this large collaborative effort funded through ONR.
