DIVISION 1 SHORT FORM GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

PART 1 – GENERAL

ITEM 1 - DESCRIPTION OF WORK

1.1 Background: The Stephens Balustrade is the central visual piece at the original formal entrance to the park. It is a classic Italianate shell fountain with flanking staircases at the sides, constructed in the late 1800s. It resides at a prominent central location between the Maurice Bathhouse on the North, and the Fordyce Bathhouse (Park visitor center) on the South. Guarded at by two massive cut stone pylons topped by Federal Eagles at the south entrance.

The balustrade is a double staircase, including cut stone handrails, balusters and newel posts. As the central object of interest in the middle of the historic formal entrance, aesthetic quality must be maintained, as well as attention to maintaining a safe walking and stair climbing environment. Failure to maintain the structure will lead to loosening of the handrails, deterioration of the structural integrity of the marble stairs in their setting beds, failure of balusters and newels and potential for loss of historic fabric, not to mention the creation of a safety hazard to visitors using the stair to gain access to the Grand Promenade above.

The concrete walkway area West and South of the Balustrade is in poor condition creating unsafe conditions to pedestrian traffic. Replacing all concrete surfaces of the walkway area will eliminate the unsafe conditions and improve the visual aspect.

ASTM D 3963/D 3963M.

4.6 JOINTS

A. General: Form construction, isolation, and contraction joints and tool edges true to line, with faces perpendicular to surface plane of concrete. Construct transverse joints at right angles to centerline unless otherwise indicated.

1. When joining existing paving, place transverse joints to align with previously placed joints unless otherwise indicated.

B. Construction Joints: Set construction joints at side and end terminations of paving and at locations where paving operations are stopped for more than one-half hour unless paving terminates at isolation joints.

1. Continue steel reinforcement across construction joints unless otherwise indicated. Do not continue reinforcement through sides of paving strips unless otherwise indicated.

2. Provide tie bars at sides of paving strips where indicated.

3. Keyed Joints: Provide preformed keyway-section forms or bulkhead forms with keys unless otherwise indicated. Embed keys at least 1-1/2 inches into concrete.

4. Doweled Joints: Install dowel bars and support assemblies at joints where indicated.

Lubricate or coat with asphalt one-half of dowel length to prevent concrete bonding to one side of joint.

C. Isolation Joints: Form isolation joints of preformed joint-filler strips abutting concrete curbs, catch basins, manholes, inlets, structures, other fixed objects, and where indicated.

1. Extend joint fillers full width and depth of joint.
