About this file
This document is a Salient Characteristics specification for an 8-liter (2-gallon) churn sample splitter required by the USGS Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) in Tuscaloosa, AL. The equipment will be used at water data collection sites nationwide to combine water and sediment samples from stream flow to create composite representative samples for analysis.
The technical specifications require a polyethylene cylindrical vessel that meets USGS water sampling protocol, with an 8-liter minimum capacity, disc churn with holes and orienting notch for optimal mixing, and a spring-loaded spigot with full open lever stop. The unit must include a lid that allows the handle to pass through, replaceable components (lid, churn, and spigot), and a heavy-duty swing handle capable of supporting the churn when full or empty. Size requirements specify maximum dimensions of 22cm (8-1/2 inches) diameter and height of 28cm (11 inches), extending to 41cm (16-1/8 inches) with the handle upright.
