About this file
This document outlines specifications for snowmachines to be procured by the Bureau of Land Management for patrol of the Iditarod National Historic Trail. The snowmachines must have a minimum 95 horsepower four-stroke engine with electric fuel injection, liquid cooling, and a fuel capacity of at least 11 gallons. The track must be between 154-200 inches long with paddles at least 1.5 inches. Front and rear suspension travel minimums are specified. The rear suspension must be articulating with a locking mechanism. Additional required features include an ultra-high windshield, hitch/towing receiver or mount, removable heated rear seat, manufacturer OEM ice scratchers, and tan/desert color matching BLM uniforms. BLM – Iditarod NHT Patrol Snowmachine Specifications
Crossover Trail/Utility Snowmachines must include the following specifications to meet safety and reliability requirements for work type, specific justification for each item is listed in italic:
1. Fuel type: regular unleaded, 87 octane (high octane fuel is unavailable in most rural Alaska areas)
2. Fuel capacity: minimum 11 gallons (fuel capacity is required for extended patrols between fuel sources)
3. Engine: minimum 95 horse power (for pulling heavy loads), and electric fuel injection (EFI) four stroke (to increase fuel efficiency), liquid cooled (to assist with cooling on hard snow pack)
4. Track: to be no wider than 20” no shorter than 154” and paddles no shorter than 1.5”
5. Suspension: Front: minimum travel 8.7 inches Rear: minimum travel 9.4 inches (the
Iditarod trail is known for extreme conditions to include trail degradation; the machines must be able to handle extreme surfaces under heavy loads)
6. Suspension: Rear to be articulating with locking mechanism (no tool required) to allow more maneuverability and towing capabilities. (conditions along the trail necessitate the ability to back, turn, and haul heavy loads, the articulating rear suspension with locking mechanism provides a solution to all of the conditions and maneuverability that may be required.)
7. Wind shield: Ultra-high (to provide safety and protection from sub zero temperatures)
8. Bumper: to have hitch receiver or mount for towing.
9. Rear Seat: Machines should be easily adjusted to the mission set to include a removable rear seat with heated grips.
10. EXTRAS:
a. Machines are to be outfitted with manufacturer OEM ice scratchers (to assist with track lubrication and cooling)
b. Color should closely match BLM uniform colors: tan or desert color if available
(machines will be used in a law enforcement and permit compliance capacity, machines should be identifiable as BLM through markings and color)
c. Keys: each machine is to come with three (3) ignition keys
