Parkwide orientation

To orient visitors to the entire extent of the park, highlighting its most important features, facilities, and destinations; to place the visitor's present location in the context of the park's vast ecosystem.

Purpose

View

A relatively new porcelain panel, "Along the Tamiami Trail," presently occupies the proposed exhibit site. As a temporary fix, this proposal recommends immediately swapping the "Welcome to Everglades" panel (from the parking island) with the "Tamiami" panel. Bus passengers would benefit more from the parkwide information.

When the new parkwide wayside exhibit map is produced for all parkwide orientation panels, then the "Welcome to Everglades " porcelain panel should be replaced.

The new parkwide orientation exhibit will be duplicated, except for the "You Are Here" locator, for Exhibit 116,146, 163, 196, 215, 234, and 235.

Taylor Slough: Managed Water

To identify Taylor Slough and to interpret its role in the visible sawgrass ecosystem and as a source of fresh water for the Florida Bay estuary; to reveal the "managed" nature of this water source and to interpret the implications of the Everglades' manipulated life-support system.

Purpose

North toward pumping station.

View

Site development and landscaping for two wayside exhibits should be incorporated into the present site planning and construction to ensure an optimal view area and interpretive opportunity, and to segregate parking away from the exhibits. For many visitors entering the park, this may be their first encounter with Everglades' wayside exhibits, particularly if they bypass the Coe Visitor Center. It is therefore essential that site design and exhibit design set a highly positive precedent.

Content of this and other roadside waysides will make reference to visible, significant features that visitors might view at other locations during their drive across the Everglades landscape. The exhibits' intent will be to instill in the visitors an "active eye" - an appreciation for the sometimes subtle but no less significant features in the changing scene.

The Everglades

To interpret this wide-open vista of sawgrass river as a prime example of "Everglades" - a freshwater wetlands that comprises a third of park habitat and gives the park its name; to interpret the pattern of sawgrass, sloughs, and tree islands, and to refer to the not-always-visible swarm of life that relates to the 'Glades' ecological significance.

Purpose

North toward sawgrass slough View

Landscaping should incorporate Exhibits 15 and 16, which should be clustered adjacent to each other.

For many visitors, this will be their first opportunity to view a broad expanse of sawgrass/everglades habitat.

The contrast with the agricultural scene just outside park boundaries should prove to be striking.

Gumbo Limbo Trail

To provide essential trail information such as distance, configuration, and level of difficulty; to introduce the trail experience and significance by identifying and interpreting this tropical hardwood hammock, with emphasis on the vegetation; to communicate key resource protection messages with international symbols.

Purpose

Beginning of trail, East entrance View

As an immediate, interim measure, replace hurricane exhibit with existing trailhead panel to better define the trail entrance. Relocate the hurricane exhibit to the West end of the trail, approximately 18 feet in from trail terminus.

Design of the resource-protection component of this exhibit will be standard on all proposed trailheads, to communicate these important messages clearly and consistently.

History of Paradise Key

To place this hammock in historical context, using a historic quotation to suggest the awe generated by this remote island of bromeliads, orchids, and tropical vegetation; to relate the 1870s experience to the preservation and establishment of the park.

Purpose

Hammock vegetation View

The existing exhibit shelter is intrusive and outmoded and should be removed, except for the concrete pad and benches. The new series of trail exhibits is intended to focus visitors on trail environment and the resource, not intrude with outsized structural elements. It is also important not to slow people down with too much information near the very beginning of their experience.

Anhinga Trail

To provide essential trail information such as distance, configuration, and degree of difficulty; to introduce the trail as an excellent place to view Everglades wildlife up close because this area of deep, open water approximates the conditions of a gator hole (during dry season); to communicate key resource protection messages with international symbols.

Purpose

Pond View

Although trailhead exhibits are typically vertical uprights, the Anhinga Trail begins in a very open, exposed area where a vertical format exhibit would intrude on the view of wildlife. Optimum location for the trailhead exhibit deserves further analysis, to define the start of the trail and to communicate with the greatest number of visitors who wander toward the trail.

"How Much Water for Wildlife?"

To interpret how water use in south Florida affects wildlife in specific ways in Taylor Slough and, by extension, throughout the Everglades; to discuss the seasonal dynamic of water and wildlife in this slough (with reference to the water gauge).

Purpose

Pond and water gauge View

This exhibit will be a redo of the existing porcelain panel, which is text-heavy and is not designed according to the new parkwide format.

Note: Safety sign - "illegal to feed or harass alligators" -is blindingly shiny anodized aluminum and should be upgraded and replaced. ( See Exhibits 33 and 34).

"Exotic Fish Species"

To identify introduced species and to interpret their impact on the native wildlife community.

Purpose

The existing porcelain panel was developed as part of the "Critical Resource Issues" series. Though the content is good, it should be redesigned to reflect the new parkwide format.

Exhibit location is somewhat problematic. The first section of trail could become overloaded with intrusive signage.

Wildlife of Taylor Slough

To identify the diverse wildlife of Taylor Slough and to provide a graphic depiction of the rich biotic community here.

Purpose

Shelter View

Discard or replace existing exhibit with slough mural from the back pond shelter. Species identity would be more useful at this point, and the back pond would be freed for a more site-specific interpretive approach.

This is not a new exhibit but a repositioning of the existing mural. The mural's quality and interpretive content remain excellent, but in the long term the exhibit may be converted to the new parkwide design standard.

Anhinga habitat

To identify the visible features that make this ideal habitat for anhingas: the deep, open water where the birds can swim underwater to catch fish; the nesting and roosting sites; to interpret the connection between species, habitat, and water issues.

Purpose

Pond and nearby pond apple trees (roosting/nesting sites for anhingas).

View

Large three-panel exhibit should be relocated from this shelter to the first shelter. The new exhibit should be mounted beneath the shelter, in the center of the deck away from the viewing rail.

Because many visitors will first encounter the exhibit from the back, it should have a low angle, possibly less than 30 degrees. Determine optimal angle by experimenting with mockups.
