The USDA National Centers for Animal Health, 1920 Dayton Ave, Ames, IA, 50010 is in need of a new sand containment solution. This project will provide a 24’ x 20’ sand storage containment structure located near building 125 to support animal husbandry operations that occur within this building.

B. Scope:

This project will provide a sand containment facility composed of eco-blocks and a hoop-style roof. The requirements are listed below. The contractors shall verify the final design and provide the labor and materials to install the 24’ by 20’ structure. A site visit is highly encouraged.

a. Siting: The sand storage containment shall be sited in the location noted in the attached drawings, to the west of building 125. The exterior side of the north wall shall be a minimum of 6’ feet from the manhole to the north of the structure. Shelter shall be placed as far west as possible on the available concrete pad.

The contractor is responsible for reviewing the topography and identifying a precise location that facilitates the placement of the block placement and subsequent attachment of the roof per manufacturer requirements. Drainage of the sand containment structure’s site shall be evaluated, and the final configuration and siting must reduce pooling within the structure. Final location must be approved by the COR prior to any construction activities.

Blocks shall be placed in a running bond pattern in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations to maintain an acceptable aesthetic. Blocks shall not be damaged during placement. The final wall shall be 6’ height. Block layout shall be reviewed and approved by the COR.

d. Roof: A hoop roof shall have an affixed fabric backing and shall be placed in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. The hoop size shall be 24’ by 20’.

e. Site Activities: The contractor shall provide all equipment required to perform all activities. Any ground that is disturbed during placement activities shall be repaired to existing or better. The contractor shall maintain a clean and safe work area.
