The hydraulic pump and all attached lines shall be shielded or mounted within barriers for added protection. The hydraulic pump and motor shall provide optimum flow at the engine rpm corresponding to 540 rpm for the rear PTO mower. (Pump and motor charts, GPM vs. RPM, shall be supplied with the bid.) The mower hydraulic system shall be equipped with a dash mounted oil temperature gauge.
The mower hydraulic system shall be equipped with a fluid reservoir. The reservoir shall have flange type inlets and outlets. Pipe couplings or nipples welded to the outside of the reservoir will not be acceptable except on the low-pressure side at the tank. The reservoir shall be equipped with an oil level gauge mounted where it is easily visible. A convenient access point for draining the reservoir shall be provided. The mower hydraulic system shall utilize a 10-micron replaceable element filter(s). Flow capacity shall exceed that of the hydraulic pump. The filter shall be positioned, or isolated, so as to not lose fluid while changing the filter. All hydraulic hoses shall be the SAE crimp type, high pressure hoses with corresponding SAE fittings meeting SAE 100 R17.
Hydraulic hose and fitting sizes shall meet or exceed the size required by the hydraulic pump manufacturer's standard literature. Mounting or placement of any hydraulic valves or valve banks in the rear wheel wells is not acceptable.
A fan-forced oil to air cooler with an integral electric fan capable of maintaining the hydraulic system temperature below 180 degrees F when operating the mower at full capacity at an ambient temperature of 110 degrees F shall be supplied. Calculations supporting this capability shall be submitted with the bid, and warranty shall cover necessary modifications should the system prove inadequate. The cooler shall be mounted in a location that will minimize the amount of chaff that will mat in the cooler. The cooler fans shall be equipped with a reversing switch in the cab that will allow the operator to periodically blow chaff out of the cooler or an automatic reversing fan. The bidder shall supply information or calculations showing how their system will meet this requirement, prior to acceptance of any units.
33. BOOM MOUNTED MOWER CONTROLS: Controls, which influence the movement of the mower assemblies, shall be mounted on a joystick supplied by the mower manufacturer conveniently located within the operator's compartment (individual switches for the functions are not acceptable). These controls shall be permanently labeled appropriately to identify their functions with a simple and readable lettering style or equivalent universal symbols. The control switch used to engage the flail rotor shall be equipped with a safety device that will prevent the engine from starting with the rotor engaged. The mower cutterhead shall have an emergency shutdown switch located conveniently inside operator cab. Controls to tilt the mowing head shall be equipped with a float position. Tractor controls shall not be used to operate or position the mower.
34. OPERATOR STOW ASSIST SYSTEM: The operator stow assist system shall provide automated or semi-automated additional control to operator when returning the boom mower to the stow position. The contractor shall demonstrate system function/use in training. The system shall be the boom mower manufacturers standard product.
35. BOOM MOUNTED MOWER ACCESS DOORS/SHIELDS: Access doors, guards, and shields which must be opened for normal servicing, shall be easily opened and closed without tools. All shields shall remain functional under the forces that would be applied by a 250 lb. individual leaning on, falling against, or stepping on them.
36. MECHANICAL REAR FLAIL MOWER: The PTO driven mower shall attach to and be raised by the tractor three-point hitch and provide a minimum cut width of 96 inches. The rear mower shall be capable of hydraulically shifting to the right side to provide a cut overlap with the side mower cut path. If the side mower is the boom mounted type, the overlap shall occur when the boom mower is mowing as close as possible to the right side of the tractor. When hydraulically shifted to the left the mower shall tuck in behind the mowing tractor. At no time shall the side shifting affect the operation of the mower. The mower shall be equipped with replaceable, full length skid shoes on each side and a full width, rear mounted, gage roller. The mower shall be equipped with general purpose, coarse type cutting knives mounted in pairs and capable of cutting roadside brush and vegetation up to 2.0 inches thick. The knives shall weigh a minimum of 12.5 ounces per pair, and shall be forged, not stamped, steel. The knives shall be mounted to a minimum 6” diameter cutting shaft. The shaft ends shall be fitted with an “anti-wrap” mechanism to reduce the occurrences of debris wrapping around the cutter shaft. One (1) additional set of cutting knifes shall be supplied with each mower.
The mower housing and gage roller assembly shall be so constructed as to permanently or semi-permanently restrict the mowing cut height from being lowered below 4 inches above ground level. The restrictive cut height solution shall not void boom mower factory warranty. The solution shall be discussed at post award meeting.
The mower structure (housing, deflectors, and attachments) shall be designed, fabricated, and assembled in such a manner that, under normal operating conditions or the destructive conditions encountered during sudden impacts of rocks or metallic objects, none of the component parts of the mower shall fracture, brake, loosen, or deform in a manner that will make the mower hazardous to the operator or bystanders. The flail mower shall conform to the requirements as established in SAE Standard J1001.
Permanent safety signs which indicate DANGER DISCHARGE OPENING, either through words or easily understood symbols, easily viewable from a standing position, shall be placed at or near each discharge opening. Permanent instructions shall be placed on the mower, near the opening, stating that the mower shall not be used with the deflector or the attachment removed.
The rotor drive mechanism shall provide complete shielding of all driven members to prevent inadvertent contact during normal operating procedures of the mower. The rear deflector shall incorporate a hard rubber deflector flap that is firmly attached to the rear of the mower housing to limit the path of the ejected material to a downward direction. The rubber deflector shall also span the entire width of the mower and extend to ground level.
The rear flail mower shall come with mechanical safety stands capable of holding the weight of the mower deck while attached to tractor for the purpose of mower servicing, and inspection operations. The stands shall be capable of being securely stowed on the mower and not interfere with active mowing operations.
37. MECHANICAL REAR FLAIL MOWER ACCESS DOORS/SHIELDS: Access doors, guards, and shields which must be opened for normal servicing, shall be easily opened and closed without tools. All shields shall remain functional under the forces that would be applied by a 250 lb. individual leaning on, falling against, or stepping on them.
