Wood Panels

Western Red Cedar for NPS Park Identity Signs:

WRC for NPS Park Identity signs shall be laminated clear heart, kiln-dried vertical grain with a maximum moisture content not to exceed 12%. Cedar shall be selected per grading rules of the Western Red Cedar Lumber Associa-tion. Components of all panels including end caps shall be fabricated from the same grade.

Panel Size:

Sign panel shall be fabricated based on dimensions and format specified in the Sign Drawing Package. Panel sizes, specifications, dimensions, typography, color, and proportions shall not be altered.

Panel Assembly:

Panels shall be constructed using clear heart, vertical grain, kiln-dried wood through, glued up one board thick using 2" nominal size dimensional lumber (2" x 6", 2" x 8", 2" x 10"). Panels shall be glued using a phenolic resorcinol moisture resistant adhesive with all surface joints covered. Panels shall be clamped and cured for a minimum of 24 hours or per the manufacturers specifica-tions. Panel fabrication shall occur in air temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit during drying, adhesive application, and curing.

After curing the panel vertical edges shall be finished with a 2" x 2" vertical end strip, faced glued and reinforced with 3", No 12 stainless steel Phillips flathead screws placed 8" on center. Screw heads shall be counter-sunk to a depth of 3/8" and filled with glue-in wood plugs.

After end strips have cured the panels shall be machine planed to a finish thickness of 1-1/2". All surfaces shall be finish sanded smooth and face and back edges shall rounded to a radius of 1/8".

Panels shall not be finished with hand planes, hand-held belt, orbital, or vibrating sanders.

Graphic Layout:

Graphic layout of panels shall be as shown on the attached drawings. Graphics to be accurately reproduced from plotted outline template or directly from computer to router based on full size digital vector art. Contractor shall use an accurate grid to ensure layout is aligned vertically and horizontally.

Typography shall be NPS Rawlinson Heavy and Frutiger Bold as shown on attached drawings. Typography shall not be altered, manipulated, or changed. Substitute fonts shall not be used.

NPS Rawlinson Heavy shall be Machine-routed unless otherwise specified with a 90 degree “V" router bit with a 1/8" vertical, flat sidewall inset. Routed letters shall conform to the same size artwork. Routing depth shall be uniform. Corners of type smaller than 3" cap height shall have a radius no greater than 0.0625. Type larger than 3" cap height shall have a corner radius no greater than 0.125".

Frutiger Bold typography shall be Machine-routed unless otherwise specified using a vertical-sided, flat-bottom router bit. Routing depth to be 0.375".

Vertical dados shall be routed to a depth of 0.250".

Vertical dado width shall be based on the cap height of main typography (0.0833 x cap height - .25" for 3", 0.333" for 4", .50 for 6"). Vertical dados shall be painted as specified below.

Panels receiving an NPS Arrowhead shall be Machine-routed to a depth of 0.125" using a vertical-sid-ed, flat-bottom router bit in Overbar section of panel for NPS Standard Panel layouts or Main Sign Panel for NPS Alternate layouts. Arrowhead silhouette routed in the sign panel shall be oversized by 1/8" to accommodate inset NPS Arrowhead.

All routed type, dados, and insets shall be sanded smooth and clean. All edges shall be free of burrs and all edges eased prior to application of primer coats and paint.

Paint/Stain:

Prior to painting or staining, wood shall be Machine drum sanded, not finished with hand planes, hand-held belt, orbital, or vibrating sanders. All sawdust and sanding residue shall be removed. Wood shall be properly cleaned per paint manufacturer’s instructions.

Surfaces shall be wiped clean using a Matthews (or approved equal) Speed Prep Cleaner formulated for use on wood. All panel surfaces shall be completely dry prior to primer application.

1. Main Panel Face, sides, top, bottom, and panel back shall be solid-color stained to match colors specified in drawings. Must use Olympic Advanced Solid Stain and Sealant or approved equal. Panels shall receive a minimum of two coats. Stain shall be applied in strict accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.

2. Panel Typography and Vertical Dado shall be painted white, Satin finish.

3. Edges between type, dados, and flat panel sections shall be clean and sharp. Ragged edges and transitions, drips, and oversprays and not acceptable.
