About this file
This document is Attachment E to RFB 0510492, which establishes technical specifications for CCA treated S4S wood sign posts. The document appears to be part of a state procurement solicitation, though the specific state agency is not explicitly identified in this attachment.
The specifications require Southern Yellow Pine or Norway/Jack Pine lumber in grades No. 1 and No. 2, treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) Type C solution and processed as S4S (sanded and planed on all four sides). Posts must be partially air-dried with kiln sticks, delivered in properly banded and stackable bundles with specific spacing requirements, and include 25-year warranties against rot, decay, and termites. Key dimensional tolerances include actual dimensions within ½ inch of nominal specifications and lengths within 2 inches of ordered specifications, with straightness requirements of no more than ¼ inch bow per foot. Each 4x6 bundle must contain exactly 32 posts of uniform size, with proper stickers and spacers for air circulation and forklift handling. The Department explicitly prohibits ACQ (Ammoniacal Copper Quat) solution as an acceptable preservative system, requiring compliance with American Wood-Preservers Association Standards.

Attachment E – RFB 0510492: Specifications for CCA Treated S4S Wood Sign Posts
SPECIFICATIONS FOR CCA TREATED S4S WOOD SIGN POSTS
All posts shall be well manufactured of sound stock, to the dimensions ordered and shall comply with all quality and treating requirements as listed in the American Wood-Preservers Association Standards (http://www.awpa.com/standards/index.asp).
Species and Grade
• Southern Yellow Pine, No. 1 and No. 2
• Norway (Red) or Jack Pine, No. 1 and No. 2
• Material shall be treated with chromated copper arsenate solution (CCA), Type C as specified in
AWPA P23
Material shall be put on kiln sticks (minimum thickness of ¾”) and partially air-dried (PAD).
The bundles shall have spacers or lath, a minimum of 1/8” thickness between each layer to facilitate further drying after delivery. Bundles shall consist of one band for each four feet of bundle length, with a maximum spacing of four feet between bands.
Material must be S4S; sanded and planed on all four sides. Nominal dimensions shall be as ordered.
Actual dimensions of posts, when delivered, shall be within ½” of specified nominal dimensions on all faces. Actual length shall be within two inches (2”) of that ordered.
Posts shall be straight. No more than ¼ inch bow/foot from the center of the post to the end.
Posts must carry a 25-year warranty against rot, decay, and termites.
All bundles shall be banded and stackable. Bundles shall have 4 x 4’s on the bottom so each bundle can be picked up with a forklift. If the bundles are stacked for shipment, 4” spacers, top, bottom and sides shall separate the bundles. The spacers shall be located the same place as the stickers for top and bottom support. Stickers are wood boards that separate the layers of posts for increased air circulation.
Bundles delivered without stickers and 4” spacers will be rejected.
Posts shall be with one size (dimension and length) post per bundle. The number of posts in each 4 x 6 bundle shall be 32.
Shipments not bundled according to the above specifications may be rejected.
