Engine Scope of Work Install Instructions
Objectives:
1) Mounting KMB-36 bracket for the RF Deck behind Passenger’s seat
2) Establish procedure for the 12VDC power connection wiring of the KNG M150R mobile radio RF Deck and Remote-Control Head, defining wiring configuration step-by-step for “Ignition Sense”
3) Installation of Remote-Control Head RCH.
4.) Install BKRA-1-CF 5.) Connect to Intercom KMB-36 Mounting bracket When new build from contractor: A solid flat surface plate to be mounted under and behind the passenger seat for mounting KMB-36 horizontal with the latches facing to the door as shown below. The M150R RF deck is to be installed into a Kenwood KMB-36 bracket. The KMB-36 is to be located to provide easy access to remove the RF Deck. The orientation is so that the Mic port & USB port are accessible for future programming. A minimum of 10” service loop for all cables.
Kenwood KBM-9 installation and orientation When replacing a Kenwood radio with the new KNG M150R, remove the RF deck from the existing KMB-36 mounting bracket, KCH-11 Remote Control Head with face plate, KSA-1, remote cable, and power cable. EXCEPTION: DO NOT discard the KLF-2 Noise Filter, KMB-36 mounting tray, and KES-5 speaker. These items are suitable to be reused with the KNG M150R.
The external speaker: Installer can reuse but the wiring must be connected to the new RCH mounted in the dash. Audio out of the RF Deck doesn’t have volume control – is not used. The existing KMB-36 mounting bracket is to be fitted with the BK KAA0631 side rail adapter kit that was designed to adapt the BK M150 mobile radio. Remove the side rails from the Kenwood mobile radio and use diagram on next page to assemble to new KNG M150 mobile radio. The back side of the Driver’s & Passengers seat are to be protected with a diamond plate.
Back side of Driver’s and Passenger’s seat with diamond plate protection KMB-36 Mounting bracket The KAA0631 Adapter-Slide rail fastens to the slide rail in the side slot of the RF Deck – BK Technologies p/n Bracket, Mounting - Channel, 1400-31014-800 shown below:
Bracket, Mounting - Channel, 1400-31014-800 Above is a picture of the RF Deck and the slide rails that come with it. These slide rails can fall out and might be in the box the radio was shipped in. They need to slide in the RF Deck slot and can be adjusted by the tang that is on the right side of slide on the paper shown above.
As shown on next page, the installation instructions from BK Technologies that come with the KAA0631 adapter kit.
These instructions demonstrate the process of first attaching the adapter bars to the slide rails of RF Deck. Orientation is critical. Please pay attention to detail as the positioning is to be exact or the KMB-36 clasps will not function properly. The orientation of the bars will only work in one way, please look at drawing and install correctly.
Kit, Mobile Mounting Adaptor, KNG to Kenwood Installation Instructions
1. Affix Item 1 to KNG-Mobile with Item 2 and Item 3 as depicted in the illustration with Item 4 being pushed to the front of the radio.
2. Affix console bracket from KMB-36 Kit to Item 1 with KMB-36 hardware.
3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the opposite side of the KNG-Mobile
“Ignition Sense” KNG M150R Ignition Sense wiring is so that the radio will properly shut down and then boot up properly the next time it is turned on. The CPU in the RF Deck is a computer and the radio system requires time to save volatile memory and changes since last boot up. The RF Deck & the RCH are to be wired to same “Always Hot” 12VDC source. If either device is wired differently, the system will drain the vehicle battery in a few days! Don’t take short cuts nor ignore these instructions.
1.) KNG M150R Power wiring instructions “Always Hot” Ignition Sense Standard:
Please refer to the PSC “ENGINE SHEET 1_Rev4_020420” and “ENGINE SHEET 2_Rev2_111819” for detailed diagram of wiring. The KNG M150R has a Quick Connect male coupler that connects to the KAA0630 female coupler with Red & Black leads. The provided KAA0630 cable Red/Black 8 AWG wire is to be installed with a 10” service loop at the RF Deck. Then ran to the “Dog House” near the 12VDC + Positive terminal post. Then run the KAA0638 RCH install kit, cable Red/Black 16 AWG to same location. The two devices will have the + 12VDC source Red cable spliced to the output of the KLF-2 noise filter. The KLF-2 Red +12VDC source is to be wired to a 30 amp fuse inline to the “Always Hot” terminal post that is wired to the “Master” On/Off switch to the left of the Driver’s seat. The Black 8 AWG from the RF Deck is to be wired to the NEGATIVE ground bus inside the “Dog House.” All ground wires are to be a common ground, don’t create a ground loop. Radio is to be turned on/off via Ignition Sense. Connect a yellow 22 AWG Yellow wire jumper with female connector and couple to the Red/White wire male connector to the CCI M150 radio cable at the DB25 end.
Switched +12VDC Ignition Sense Electronics side of Dog House console
Manufacturer needs to install 30-amp fuse. Previous deliveries had a 60-amp fuse which is too much current before it blows.
Power wiring +12VDC Red Common Ground Black 2.) KNG M150R Power wiring instructions “Ignition Sense” Standard Please refer to the PSC “ENGINE SHEET 1_Rev4_020420” and “ENGINE SHEET 2_Rev2_111819” for detailed diagram of wiring.

3.) KNG M150R KAA0660 Remote Control Head - RCH wiring instructions The KAA0636 RCH 17’ control cable goes from the RCH to the RF Deck (Mobile) Cable and RF Deck rear view.
. Connect the RCH Control Cable; the KAA0636 is 17’ long and the DB9 side goes to the RCH & the ITT Canon MDM-9SSB end goes to the RF deck. Either port on the RF deck will work
RCH Control Cable KAA0638 RCH install kit power cable Connect the RCH to a Troy console faceplate custom made for the BME Engine dash, NEW PART # SP-CF-BME-BK150-R. The RCH should protrude about 1/8 of an inch from the faceplate. Use 10-32 1/2” machine screws with #10 x ¾” fender washer – not the plastic knobs in the KAA0638. A star washer is to be put in between the faceplate flange and the RCH as a spacer to prevent bowing the faceplate. Tighten so that RCH doesn’t swivel, rattle, or recede later due to vibration.
Connect the DB 25 connector KAA0647 to the RCH - The radio kit comes with one each for each device but RF Deck KAA0647 will not be used – CCI M150 cable is used instead.
Ignition Sense is not supported through the RCH Volume control is only via the RCH.
DB25 connector KAA0647 on back of RCH External Speaker 1 Radio external speaker MUST be connected to RCH DB25 connector. Use SPKR 1 Blue/Blue White pair of RCH. Cut off quick connect and butt splice if needed.
DB 25 connector KAA0647 made by two different subcontractors
Speaker wire pair have a quick disconnect coupler.
The speaker is to be mounted in the black box on ceiling above and in between the Driver’s and Passenger’s seats. It is to be wired to the SPKR 1 Blue/Blue White pair of RCH in the dash. It is permitted to cut off quick disconnect coupler to splice and extend the speaker wires. Please refer to the PSC “ENGINE SHEET 1_Rev4_020420” and “ENGINE SHEET 2_Rev2_111819” for detailed diagram of wiring.
4.) Install BKRA-1-CF Radio Intercom adapter system Install the BKRA-1-CF in the bottom of the back half of Dog House console as pictured on page
8. Connect CCI M150 cable from RF Deck to the “Radio” port of BKRA-1-CF.
Connect BKRA-1-CF to Intercom system Connect CCI SIG US-45S Intercom cable from BKRA-1-CF INTERCOM port to the Intercom system – a Sigtronics US-45S to be mounted as pictured on page 8.
Do not substitute Intercom system with any other model or manufacturer. The Intercom system is to be wired to the headset jacks as per the:
PSC “ENGINE SHEET 1_Rev4_020420” and “ENGINE SHEET 2_Rev2_111819” for detailed diagram of wiring
The J1 cable harness that comes with the Sigtroniccs US-45S system wires are to be tinned with solder and connected to an insulated terminal strip – specified as:
NTE ELECTRONICS BARRIER STRIP
MODEL 25-E2000-12 European Style 20-12 AWG wire range Two of these terminal strips are required and will be mounted in the console as to not to interfere with cables connecting the BKRA-1-CF or any other device. Picture on page 8 shows wrong type of terminal strip mounted in a bad location.
The Engine has 5 wired jack ports for the SE-8 wired Headset & one wireless SE-9 with a charging cable mounted to the speaker box on the ceiling. The Driver has the wireless SE-9 and a backup SE-8 with a PTT switch mounted to the front section of the Dog House console.
The Sigtroniccs US-45S system comes with a “CAROL C4063A” cable that is to be cut in custom lengths for each headset jack. The wiring is to be mated to the correct pinout detailed in the PSC “ENGINE SHEET 1_Rev4_020420” and “ENGINE SHEET 2_Rev2_111819” for detailed diagram of wiring.
The SWS-4 wireless system comes with a molex plug splitter that goes in between the US-45S P1 and the J1 harness to enable combined audio in between wireless headset and wired headsets. The SWS-4 wireless emitter is to be mounted with Sigtronics US-45S45S as pictured on page 8. The SWS-4 wireless charger is to be mounted in the speaker box on the ceiling and powered from console with an in-line 1 amp fuse provided in SWS-4 wireless box.
The wiring is to be done with attention to detail. Several Engines have had serious wiring problems that have required field modifications to resolve.
Antenna mounts: ¾” NMO mount with 17 feet continuous RG58U solid conductor coax with white Teflon coating. The two NMO mounts are to be 25 inches apart with a minimum of 10” clearance from roof line and any obstruction. They are to be mounted on the roof of Engine cab. Run coax to the KMB-36 mounting bracket and leave unterminated coax coiled up and zip tied to KMB-36. Radio Tech will terminate with N-Type connector and tune antenna to 159 MHz.
Note: Do not program code plug nor attempt to Clone to the RCH KAA0660. Always update via RF Deck. This is not like the Kenwood. BK has published Service Bulletins stating that the connection between the “Control Head” and “Mobile” has switches and relays that can corrupt the data. All CAL FIRE KNG M150R mobile radios are to be upgraded to the new platform of Firmware FW 5.5.0f “All-In-One” and programmed with new Software RES 5.5.3 to include the Mobile Display Disabler application and then perform the “Touchscreen Calibration” on each Control Head. Refer to:
“KNG M150R Firmware Upgrade Procedure for CAL FIRE.”
TEST:
Power on the radio via vehicle ignition switch. Radio should come on and stay on.
Verify volume control by going to a weather channel – Zone 13 ch 1.
Turn off vehicle ignition switch and radio should power off.
Make sure that the radio doesn’t stay on.
Then turn of Battery Disconnect Switch for vehicle storage.
When done, cap RF Deck Mic port with KAA0045 rubber cap shown below

Locations and Routing:
Antennas:
Two additional antennas will be mounted on the roof of the Engine, ideal mounting location has proven to be 14 inches set back from the forward most VHF antenna centerline (Figure. 1). This placement has been determined to be less pressure on the headliner from the bulky antenna cables.
Antenna cables:
The antennas for AVL will be the Sky Wave satellite cable, Cellular antenna cables and one rear VHF coax. These cables will be routed down the passenger C pillar and terminated behind the passenger rear seat, excess cable will be wrapped up (Figure. 2)
Power and Ground:
8-gauge wire will be used for both power and ground on the AVL system, these can be sourced at the center console. A Maxi fuse holder must be installed at the power source, do not place a fuse in the holder.
The power and ground routing will follow the Radio cables to the passenger side and continue its travel under the seat belt retractor trim, then under the sill plate of the right rear door (Figure. 3), and finally being tucked behind the right rear seat belt retractor and corner paneling and become terminated behind the rear seat along with the Antenna cables.
Additionally, both power and ground will need an excess of 2 feet of wire wrapped up behind the seat to provide enough cable to reach our system.
Mobile Data Terminal cable and routing:
Three cables will be loomed together with 5/8 loom. Ensuring the proper ends are together and spaced accordingly. Female serial cable end shall be paired with the 4 pin power cable connector, protruding 5 inches out of the loom. 8 inches beyond the serial and power cable end will be the CAT6 Ethernet cable, totaling 13 inches from the loom. (Figure. 4) Orientation of the power, serial and Ethernet cable is crucial for AVL operation.
The three cables will be routed from the front of the console to behind the rear seat, following existing wire routing behind radio plate and under the passenger rear sill trim. Using the Diamond plate radio cover located behind the passenger front seat as a reference, we can ensure cable lengths will be adequate. 5 feet of the cables should be available from the Radio cover, ensuring the cable ends in Figure. 4 are towards the front of the vehicle. Secure the loose cable as shown in Figure. 5.
Routing of the cables will start from between the center console and the passenger seat, following the cables ran for the radio deck, to the B pillar, then follow the path under the sill plate of the right rear door as shown in Figure. 3 and continue with the power and ground to the rear portion of the second-row seat as shown in Figure. 2.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Sky Wave satellite identification numbers must be recorded prior to installation on the vehicle. Once you open the Sky Wave box you will find two data label stickers and two protective clear stickers. Remove one data sticker and place on the top side of the satellite, in pen or sharpie write down the 5-digit state ID tag number on the sticker you have just placed on the top. Ensure the numbers are correct and cover with a protective clear sticker. Additionally, the 5-digit state ID number should also be written on the box the satellite came in, and the box must remain with the vehicle for a second means of ID records. It is imperative for both numbers to be recorded as stated above to ensure product connectivity to the specific antenna installed. The photos below are in reference to this statement.
