About this file
This document outlines requirements for surgical booms at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida. The facility requires replacement of end-of-life surgical booms in nine operating rooms, specifying Stryker booms to ensure compatibility with existing Stryker tandem mounts. The solicitation seeks booms with capacitive touch controls, electric braking, vertical articulation, 175-pound shelf capacity, compatibility with multiple gas services, and expandable service capabilities. Bidders must provide warranty coverage and ensure all equipment matches specifications for the facility's restricted ceiling infrastructure. The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 36C24822Q0424 for surgical boom equipment and installation services through the Department of Veterans Affairs and Veterans Health Administration. The deadline to submit pricing is not stated.

STATEMENT OF NEED
Equipment w/Install Surgical Booms
GENERAL: The Operating Room at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, 1601 SW Archer Rd, Gainesville Florida 32608, has a need to replace end-of-life surgical booms located in the OR Suites.
BACKGROUND: The North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System Gainesville VA Operating
Room has 11 OR suites with 9 rooms identified as the highest priority for replacement of Surgical
Booms. The current Stryker Booms are at end of life and are no longer supported by the manufacturer.
Many of these booms have an extensive repair history and no longer support equipment safely.
OR suites B, C, and D each have two Hill-Rom (part# P681-DA) booms that have no acquired date in the
Vista Equipment Profile. Looking up the make and model of these booms, it’s estimated that they are
18-20 years old with extensive repair histories and no longer supported by manufacturer because they were discontinued.
OR suites A, C, F, G, H, and J were reviewed and identified by Biomed, Engineering, and Surgical
Leadership as the rooms that have existing end-of-life Stryker booms that need to be replaced. Many of these booms have an extensive repair history and no longer support equipment safely. Several of the booms “float” and won’t stay in place when moved by staff. They can “float” into the sterile field or obstruct equipment. All these rooms were completed before the end of fourth quarter 2009.
The newly installed booms Must support and work with all preexisting power, data, and video cables.
The booms will have new electrical cables and outlets. There is no way to recycle the existing power cables as the booms come pre-manufactured with these power outlets which is part of the UL listing.
Low voltage cabling (Data and Video) will be recycled. Most importantly, these booms will work with all the rough-in requirements above the ceiling as they were originally built for Stryker.
SCOPE OF WORK: The Contractor shall Provide, and Install Surgical Booms also known as Medical
Booms or Operating Room (OR) booms are designed to ergonomically centralize all surgical support equipment and utility services for OR Staff. Booms are used in facilities where there is a need for access to medical gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, electrical power, and audio-visual data services. By keeping cords out of the way of surgical staff, surgical booms reduce trip hazards. Most surgical booms also provide shelving and accessory equipment side rails to organize and centralize equipment.
Surgical Booms are often designed to be flexible and able to conform to various configurations depending on the space requirements, function, and purpose. Factors such the type of surgical procedures, interaction with equipment, and layout of the room must be considered when designing a surgical boom. A surgical boom often contains multiple electric and gas outlets for electrical power needs and medical gases. Ceiling mount location, the number of mounts, arm length, and column length are all variables that must be selected to ensure proper integration of the surgical boom into the perioperative workspace.
OR suites A, C, F, G, H, and J currently have Stryker Surgical Booms installed in the ceiling using the
Stryker Tandem Mounts. One side of the Stryker Tandem Mount supports the surgical boom that we are requesting to replace. The other side of the tandem mount supports the OR Led adjustable lights and adjustable surgical monitors which are all used to support surgical cases. The OR is only requesting replacement of the surgical booms, not the OR surgical lights and monitors. This is a critical point for our needs, only Stryker can use the existing Stryker tandem mount which is cost effective for the government since we do not need to replace the lighting and monitors. If another Boom vendor comes in, they would have to replace the entire suspension (Stryker surgical boom, Surgical lighting, and surgical monitors) which could double the cost due to surgical lights being more expensive than booms.
Also, with a different vendor, we would need to replace the structure in the ceiling. Stryker is the only vendor that can use the preexisting Stryker Tandem Mounts. Every boom and surgical light vendor have different requirements which will increase costs. By using the existing Stryker tandem mount and replacing only the surgical booms, this will reduce the construction time considerably. This will help prevent delays in providing surgical procedures for our Veterans.
OR suites B, C, and D already have Stryker OR lights installed, so we don’t need to replace them during the surgical boom replacement.
SPECIFIC NEED/ SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS:
• Must have capacitive touch brake control provides an intuitive one-step operation with “grab and go” handles
• Must be full electric brake system eliminates the need to pipe N20/Air specifically for brake control.
• Must have powered and manual vertical articulating arm options
• Must have the ability to combine an all-electric brake system with vertical articulation.
• Must have full 330˚ rotation.
• Must meet NFPA 70 2011, NFPA 99 2012, and UL 60601-1 standards
• Must have a footprint no larger than 12” on each side.
• Must support 175lbs shelf weight capacity.
• Must include one-tool easy access panel for servicing and post-install changes.
• Must be able to support gas services in at least three manufacturers.
• Variety of connection and high-voltage outlet types (color and connection)
• Gas hose assemblies are UL1331 compliant
• Ability to free pull low-voltage Stryker cables for increased throat capacity in the boom
• KEZR and KEXS isolated power
• Triple Redundant ground system
• TC Integrated Mounting Suspension utilizes a single mounting location for multiple booms, light and flat panel combinations, reducing initial construction costs by minimizing need for additional structure
• Arms (vertical & horizontal) are customized for OR design and needs
• In-field replaceable service head
• Expandable gas and data capabilities allows services to be added to installed boom in the field
• Three different shelving options

WARRANTY OF EQUIPMENT: Contractor must provide their best manufacturer(s) warranty on all provided equipment/supplies.
