9.0 Identity Sign Fabrication Details

MIMA-2022-1392-ID

02-23-2023

Minute Man National Historical Park

Type of Stone and Color: Igneous granite (medium gray with minerals), basalt (dark gray), and metamorphic gneiss (greenish-gray). Because of the presence of granite, basalt, gneiss, the overall color of the park’s walls is a dark gray with a hint of green. The green hue is enhanced by the presence of green and gray lichen. Stone with high iron content (rust/orange color), while present in the park’s bedrock, is not desired for the gateway sign’s field stone. Stone shall match historic walls and structures.

Any reclaimed field stone shall be cleaned prior to erection. Do not use wire brushes or imple-ments that mark or damage exposed surfaces. Split stone at site to produce clean faces. Size stone units to fit opening dimensions and perimeter conditions. Arrange stone pattern to provide color uniformity and minimize visual variations and provide a uniform blend of stone unit sizes.

Size (and weight) of stones: Field stone walls include a consistency in overall composition, but some variability in stone size. Generally, the larger stones are set into the ground as part of the footer. Large stones, known as flat stones, may also be used in the upper course as capstones. The top of the wall should be a consistent height. With an assumed weight of 165/lbs a cubic foot, individual stones would range from 100 to 600 lbs in appearance, with most stones in the 100 to 300 lb range in appearance.

Contact between Stones: Stones should have surface contact without air pockets.

Mortar: Mortar is not used in the park’s historic stone walls. Mortar for the gateway sign structure must be concealed and dry stacked. Mortar should be pigmented dark gray so that it is not visible, and joints raked clean or mortar fully concealed within the wall. See example from the Buttrick Estate. Remove excess mortar as work progresses and upon completion of work.

The park’s broad farm field walls are two sided with small stone filling the middle. The sign structure can be poured concrete or CMU block with field stone on the outer layer as long as the outward appearance resembles the park’s historic stone walls.

Horizontal orientation of stones: Fieldstones should be set horizontally with staggered joints as opposed to vertical or diagonal placement of stone. The remnant well-built field stone walls in the park demonstrate a consistent orientation of the stone with weight distributed horizontally.

Stones should not be set upright or at a diagonal, particularly on the pillar.

Split acceptable but not drill marks: Stones may be split, as pictured at Old Manse and Sargent Field walls, but drill marks from splitting should not be visible. Perfectly split stone, such as recycled granite curbing is unacceptable.

Minimize use of wedge stones: Small wedge stones should be minimized as these were not typical of the agricultural walls throughout the park. Wedge stones are typically less than 50 lbs and used to fill gaps between larger stones. Use of more than 10 percent wedge stones in the wall will alter the character of the field stone wall.

Field Stone Pillar: A rectangular or square field stone pillar is challenging to construct with large stones and construct four clean edges. The pillar may be slightly larger to facilitate using large stones on four corners. Splitting stones is acceptable, but placing the grain of the stone vertically is unacceptable. The Old Manse and Sargent Field stone walls provide examples of the type of stone that would work well for the pillar. The Old Manse, Major John Buttrick, and North Bridge Visitor Center images show field stone corners.

Clean soiled surfaces with cleaning solution. Use non-metallic tools in cleaning operations.

The following pictures illustrate the characteristics of Minute Man NHP stone walls to be incorporated into the park’s new main identity sign.

Old Manse: note use of flat stones for top of wall, igneous granite, minimal use of wedges, lots of contact between stones.

Barrett House: note large stone, horizontally laid, minimal use of wedges, stones are igneous granite and metamorphic gneiss—dark gray.

Sargent Field: note large angular stones (split) for even top course.

Monument Street: Note color of stones, larger stone at base, but overall stone size is too small for gateway sign.

Smith House, Battle Road Trail: Note range of sizes, but more surface contact needed.

Major John Buttrick: Example of corner without mortar visible.

Buttrick Estate: Example of rounded pillar with dark gray pigmented concealed mortar.

North Bridge Visitor Center: Example of corner, but with too much mortar.

Visible mortar is not acceptable.

Material Overview and Fabrication Written Specifications for HDU Panel and Frame

High Density Foam (HDU) for NPS Park Identity Signs:

Panel Material:

Sign panels are to be constructed of high density urethane closed cell rigid foam with a minimum density of 20 lbs per cubic foot. The contractor must select a type of HDU foam that is widely used in the outdoor sign industry and follow all manufacturers specifications for painting, routing, and hardware attachment.

Panel Size:

Sign panel shall be fabricated based on dimensions and format specified in the Sign Drawing Package. Panel sizes, specifica-tions, dimensions, typography, color, and proportions shall not be altered.

Panel Assembly:

Each panel shall be constructed from a single piece of HDU foam, sealed and finished on all sides. If Panel must be spliced together to achieve full panel sign than the sample submitted must include a seam and bonding agent for approval before fabrication. Seam must not be noticeable.

Panel thickness prior to painting shall be 1-1/2". All surfaces shall be finish sanded smooth and face and back edges shall rounded to a radius of 1/8".

Graphic Layout:

Graphic layout of panels shall be as shown on the attached drawings. Graphics to be accurately reproduced from plotted outline template or directly from computer to router based on full size digital vector art. Contractor shall use an accurate grid to ensure layout is aligned vertically and horizontally.

Typography shall be NPS Rawlinson Heavy and Frutiger Bold as shown on attached drawings. Typography shall not be altered, manipulated, or changed. Substitute fonts shall not be used.

NPS Rawlinson Heavy shall be Machine-routed unless other-wise specified with a 90 degree “V" router bit with a 1/8" vertical, flat sidewall inset. Routed letters shall conform to the same size artwork. Routing depth shall be uniform. Corners of type smaller than 3" cap height shall have a radius no greater than 0.0625. Type larger than 3" cap height shall have a corner radius no greater than 0.125".

Frutiger Bold typography shall be Machine-routed unless otherwise specified using a vertical-sided, flat-bottom router bit. Routing depth to be 0.375".

A 0.250" deep dado shall be routed in the panel between the main panel and the overbar. Dado height shall be as indicated in the attached drawings. If unspecified in drawings, dado height shall be determined based on cap height of main typography (0.0833 x cap height - .25" for 3", 0.333" for 4", .50 for 6"). Dado shall be routed in to the main panel field with the overbar being full height. Routed dado shall be painted same color as the overbar.

NPS Alternate Panel layouts receive a vertical dado in addition to the horizontal dado. Vertical dados shall be routed to a depth of 0.250". Vertical dado width shall be based on the cap height of main typography (0.0833 x cap height - .25" for 3", 0.333" for 4", .50 for 6"). Vertical dados shall be painted as specified below.

Panels shall be Machine-routed to receive an NPS arrowhead to a depth of 0.5" using a vertical-sided, flat-bottom router bit in Overbar section of panel for NPS Standard Panel layouts or Main Sign Panel for NPS Alternate layouts. Arrowhead shiloutte routed in the sign panel shall be oversized by 1/8" to accommodate inset NPS Arrowhead.

All routed type, dados, and insets shall be sanded smooth and clean. All edges shall be free of burrs and all edges eased prior to application of primer coats and paint.

Paint:

Prior to painting panels shall be finish sanded smooth. Panels shall not be finished with hand planes, hand-held belt, orbital, or vibrating sanders. All dust and sanding residue shall be removed from the sign. Panel shall be properly cleaned per paint manufacturer’s instructions.

Panels shall be sprayed using a VOC compliant, Mathews White Epoxy Primer (or approved equal) on all surfaces. Primer coats shall be applied in strict accordance with the paint and HDU foam manufacturers’ specifications.

Final top coat colors shall be a Matthews Satin VOC, Semi Gloss finish applied per the graphic layouts.

1. Panel Overbar and dado between main panel face and overbar shall be NPS River Rock (Matthews Paint MP63852, PMS 449), Satin VOC Semi Gloss (or approved equal). The Overbar color shall wrap to panel sides;

2. Main Panel Face, sides, and panel back shall be Northwood Brown (Matthews MP63853, PMS 7531) Satin VOC Semi Gloss (or approved equal);

3. Panel Typography and Vertical Dado on NPS Alternate Panel layouts shall be Matthews MP63854, PMS Warm Gray 1, Satin VOC Semi Gloss (or approved equal).

Edges between type, dados, and flat panel sections shall be clean and sharp. Ragged edges and transitions, drips, and oversprays and not acceptable.

Steel Steel Sign Structure:

Sign assemblies shall be fabricated with tubular steel upright posts, 4" x 4" x 1/4" wall. Panels shall attach to a steel mounting structure designed and engineered by the fabricator to meet visual criteria shown in the drawings. Hardware cannot pass through sign face.

Steel posts shall be mounted per the specified drawings and can include direct embedment of posts or baseplate mounting. Steel post length shall be cut per specified drawings. Posts shall be cut to allow flush alignment of post and sign panel.

Steel mounting plate shall be fabricated with A-36, A-500B, or A-847, x 1/4" steel plate. Internal weld edges shall be welded clean and ground smooth.

Paint:

Prior to painting, all steel components shall be sanded, sand blasted, or bead blasted to remove all oils, burrs, and rust. Rust shall be completely removed from all surfaces, edges, and corners. Exposed welds shall be ground clean and smooth.

Cleaning of steel surfaces shall be in strict accordance with paint manufacturer’s specifications. All surfaces shall be completely dry prior to primer application.

After cleaning, all steel components shall be sprayed using a VOC compliant, Mathews White Epoxy Primer (or approved equal) on all surfaces. Primer coat(s) shall be applied in strict accordance with the paint manufacturer’s specifications.

Final top coat colors shall be a Matthews Satin VOC, Semi Gloss finish (or approved equal). Post and steel mounting plate assemblies shall receive a minimum of two top coat finishes.

Paint shall be applied smooth and clean with no oversprays, drips, paint runs, or bubbles. Paint shall be applied so that weep holes are clear and not plugged.

Sign posts, all mounting components, and steel mounting plates shall be Northwood Brown (Matthews MP63853, PMS 7531) Satin VOC Semi Gloss (or approved equal).
