About this file

This document includes guidelines for boundary marking, leave tree marking, and optional cut tree marking for a timber sale on the National Grasslands in Texas. The solicitation seeks quotes for marking approximately 18 miles of unit boundaries in Compartment 14 with 3 diagonal slashes and stump marks on trees spaced between 20-150 feet apart. Leave tree marking will involve full wrap breast marks and stump marks on selected pine trees in 10 units totaling 236 acres in Compartments 14 and 19. Units in Compartment 14 will be thinned to a basal area of 60-70 square feet per acre, while units in Compartment 19 will be thinned to 80-100 square feet per acre. Optional cut tree marking includes sample tree cruising and marking of 271 acres in Compartment 14, selecting trees to achieve a target basal area of 60 square feet per acre. The solicitation was issued by the USDA Forest Service and quotes are due by the date specified in solicitation number 12363N24Q4028.

Beaver Creek C14 (Deer Hunter/ Hickory Creek) Boundary Marking Guidelines

Boundary Marks will be three diagonal slash marks, 4 inches wide. Slash marks should face into the cutting unit and cover 2/3 of the tree. The middle slash mark should be at breast height or higher. Two stump marks on sawtimber size trees (11”+) and one stump mark on pulpwood size trees (5.0”-10.9”). Stump marks should be placed so that sufficient paint gets into bark crevices and extends into the ground –line ensuring that paint will remain on the stump over time. On sloping ground, the stump mark should be placed on the downhill side.

A combination of Pine and Hardwood can be utilized for boundary trees.

General Boundary tree Guidelines: The healthy large sawtimber size trees are preferred;

however, pulpwood size trees can be marked if that’s all that’s available. Otherwise, no priority will be given to tree selection. Spread out boundary marks as much as possible but close enough that marks from adjacent trees can be seen (min. 20’- max 150”).

Beaver Creek C14 (Deer Hunter/Hickory Creek) Leave Tree Marking Guidelines

Leave tree marks will be full wrap breast marks, 4 inches wide. Two stump marks on sawtimber, 11”+, and one stump mark on pulpwood 5.0-10.9”. Stump marks should be placed so that sufficient paint gets into bark crevices and extends into the ground –line ensuring that paint will remain on the stump over time. On sloping ground the stump mark should be placed on the downhill side.

Mark Pine only. No hardwood will be marked.

All units in Compartment 14 will be thinned to a target BA of 60-70 ft2/acre.

All units in Compartment 19 will be thinned to a target BA of 80-100 ft2/acre.

General Leave tree Guidelines: Leave trees will be the best quality pines according to criteria listed below, and they will be uniformly distributed as much as possible, although spacing between leave trees is secondary to tree quality. Priority will be given in the order listed below.

In some stands, it will be common to have more good quality trees available than what is needed to make the leave basal area. In that case, preference will be given to spacing, i.e. leaving trees that are more uniformly spaced.

Leave trees should be:

• Shortleaf over Loblolly when Shortleaf is well formed. Longleaf is not likely to be present. However, if found it should be retained.

• Dominant or codominant crown classes. However, leave tall, well-formed, intermediate pine over limby or diseased pines, even if the more desired pine is much larger.

• Free of Fusiform rust cankers on the main stem of the tree.

• Having a full crown, not broken by wind, ice or snow.

• Single-stemmed trees are preferred, but a forked tree may be retained if it is the best tree available.

• Straight, well-pruned trees are preferred if available. For example, a straight, well-pruned pine that is 14” dbh and codominant would be preferred over an 18” dbh dominant tree with many residual branch stubs of a fading / weak crown.

• No leave trees will be marked if they are within 3 feet of a cut tree.

Beaver Creek C14 (Deer Hunter/Hickory Creek) Cut Tree Marking Guidelines

Cut tree marks will be a particular mark for each marker on one side of the tree at about breast height.

Only Pine will be marked.

Pine will be thinned to a target BA of 60 ft2/acre.

• No trees will be retained if they are within 3 feet of a cut tree.
