About this file

This document is a Materials Test Pits report prepared by Kathie Marks in December 2024 for the Ringing Rock Road project, documenting excavation and material assessment for a road realignment segment. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) conducted two test pits using a 305 Mini Excavator to evaluate ground conditions and excavation requirements at different project stations.

Key findings include that all excavation is anticipated to be fractured rock able to be dug with standard heavy equipment. Test pit one at station 20+15 revealed material mostly 4-5 inches in size, with digging progressing about 3 feet in 20 minutes. A quarry manager noted the slight white coloration indicates the rock vein is fractured and unlikely to require blasting. The excavated material is planned to be used as primary fill material between stations 3+50-6+00. Test pit two at station 33+50 showed easier digging conditions with larger scattered rock mixed with fine grain material, with approximately 5 feet excavated in 15-20 minutes. The report includes multiple photographs documenting the excavation process and terrain.

Ringing Rock Road Materials Test pits Prepared by Kathie Marks December 2024

In November 2024 BLM dug two test pits and dug on the road cut slope of the realignment segment to determine materials for constructing the new alignment. BLM was trying to determine the extent of rock and dig effort in the largest areas of cut for project. BLM used a 305 Mini Excavator.

All excavation for the project is anticipated to be fractured and able to be dug with standard heavy equipment that would be necessary for this project.

BLM Excavator:

December 2024 Test pit one approximate station 20+15. Design cut depth approx. 8-10ft Digging was slow but material all was fractured and able to be dug. We were able to dig about 3 ft in 20min. Most material encountered was about 4-5 inch minus. Based on the experience of the Pipestone quarry manager Bart the slight white to the material means that that vein is all fractured and shouldn’t get into anything needing blasting. This excavated material is the primary fill material needed at Sta 3+50-6+00.

December 2024 Cut slope excavation approximate station 28+00 the road alignment stays primirily on the existng prism through this stretch but there are some culvert installs and turnouts. This rock outcrop was able to be easily dug and moved.

December 2024 Test pit two approximate station 33+50 at Control point 113. Design cut depth approx. 8ft This location is the primary cut material for the lower portion of the second switchback around Sta 35+40.

Although there was a fair amount of rock on the surface we were able to dig much easier than test pit one. The scattered rock was larger but mixed with mostly fine grain. Dug approximately 5 ft in 15-20 min.
