PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
1. Statement of Need and Purpose:
The purpose of this acquisition is procurement of automated, UV and visible light protein crystallization imaging system for inspection and detection of protein crystals in crystallization droplets.
2. Background Information and Objective:
The Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit/ NINDS conducts biophysical and structural studies on microtubules and microtubules regulating proteins with focus on understanding the function of post-translational modifications on the recruitment of cellular effectors. The dual mode visible light and UV-fluorescence microscope will be used to support ongoing crystallization trial of microtubules related proteins. The microscope provides the way for: (1) detection of protein crystals in crystallization droplets in trays and automatic imaging of multiple crystallization conditions (2) discrimination between protein and salt crystals by comparison of visible, UV and fluorescence images, (3) detection of microcrystals hidden at the edges of the droplets or masked by amorphous precipitate, (4) selection of potential crystallization hits leading to diffracting crystals.
3. Generic Name of Product:
Automated, visible light and UV fluorescence microscope for protein crystals detection.
4. Purchase Description:
