About this file
This document contains the salient characteristics for a PHI 420 Precision Bending Machine that is being requested under Solicitation Number FA55824Q0123 issued by the Department of the Air Force United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa. The bending machine is needed to replace an over 20-year-old model currently used by the 100th Maintenance Squadron to support structural maintenance for the 100th Air Refueling Wing's KC-135 fleet as well as support for tenant C-130 and CV-22 units. The PHI 420 is a manually operated "draw" or "rotary die" type bender that can handle tube sizes up to 1.5-inch diameter by 0.065-inch wall thickness, and provides precise and accurate bends without requiring an outside power source. The complete system includes a floor stand, rail and carriage assembly, mandrel rod bracket, and hydraulic mandrel extractor. The solicitation is seeking this bender to streamline the structural maintenance manufacturing capabilities of the 100th Maintenance Group.

100 MXS Production Tube Bender
SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
Item being requested is a PHI 420 Precision Bending Machine with floor stand, rail and carriage assembly, mandrel rod bracket, and hydraulic mandrel extractor. The Aircraft Structural Maintenance shop currently has an over 20-year-old model of this tube bender that is dilapidated and in need of replacement. A new bending machine will streamline structural maintenance local manufacturing capabilities that the 100th Maintenance Group will need to continue to answer the 100th Air Refueling Wings Mission. It serves as a piece of machinery that every Structural Maintenance section, Air Force wide, should be equipped with. With an aging KC-135 and Support Tenant units of the RC's/SOW’s C-130 & CV-22-unit fleet a new bender will be essential to stay ahead of manufacturing demands.
PHI’s Model 420 Precision Manual Bending Machine is a totally flexible and precise manually operated “draw” or “rotary die” type machine. It has a special gear-operated bend arm that will increase leverage 4 to 1 when bending heavier tubes. The bender head is bolted to a machine table which is mounted on a tooling storage cabinet. Since it requires no outside power source, your maintenance team can now make precise and accurate bends anywhere in the field.
The 420 may be set up for either right- or left-hand bending. This machine can be purchased in a bend head only configuration or as a complete system for those jobs requiring multiple bends on different axes – degree of bend (DOB), distance between bend (DBB), and plane of bend (POB). This is the ideal system for forming tube sizes up to 1.5-inch diameter (OD) x 0.065 inch wall thickness (WT).
• Self-contained – needs no outside power source.
• Hydraulic foot operated mandrel extractor.
• Precision bends – equipped for wiper die and ball mandrel capabilities.
• Plane of bend carriage with adjustable chuck.
• 0.5 in and 1.0 in diameter tool post.
• Tool Adapter Kit and Operator’s Manual are included with the machine
• Capacity – OD: 1.5 in (38 mm) OD max.
• Capacity – Bend Radius / CLR: 8 in (200 mm) centerline max.
• Capacity – Torque: 17,280 in-lb torque max.
• Examples:
• Tube: 1.5 in (38 mm) OD x 0.065 in (1.651 mm) WT x 2D CLR.
• Pipe: 1 in IPS [1.315 in (33.401 mm) OD] x SCH 40 [0.133 in (3.378 mm) WT] x 3D CL
