Rehabilitation of Machine Shop Crane
Glen Canyon Dam, Page, Arizona
1.0 Purpose
The Bureau of Reclamation, Glen Canyon Field Division Power Plant, located in Page, Arizona requires rehabilitation of one Savigliano 75 Ton Bridge Crane located in the Power Plant Machine Shop.
2.0 SCOPE Restore functionality of the crane maintaining the original rate capacity of the crane
• Convert to radio control
• Replace all four sets of brakes with new thruster brakes (disks brakes preferred)
• Perform a mechanical inspection of all components of the crane
• Perform load tests of both hooks and make any adjustments necessary to accomplish smooth, safe operation.
• Provide four hours training to plant mechanics and electricians
• Perform work in accordance with Crane Manufacturer’s Association of America
(CMAA), OSHA 1910.179, ASME B30.2, and Reclamation Safety and Health Standards (RSHS).
• Provide parts of OEM quality or better. Parts are considered equal if they meet the same performance quality and reliability standards as OEM parts that would be used in a new crane installation.
3.0 Background
3.01 The Savigliano 75 Ton Bridge Crane was installed during initial construction of the machine shop in the early 1960s. In this configuration it was equipped with DC motors and drives. In the mid-1990s the crane was modernized. Motors and drives were switched to AC.
It has the following configuration:
Location HP RPM Speeds Brake Diameter Brake Width
Number of Brakes
Trolley Drive 3 1140 0 – 30 ft/min 4 ½” 2 ¾” 1 Bridge Drive 10 1160 0 – 85 ft/min 5 ½” 3 ¼” 1 15 Ton Hook 60 1160 0 – 33 ft/min 500mm 165mm 2 75 Ton Hook 60 1160 0 – 6.6 ft/min 500mm 165mm 2
Electrical power is 480VAC 3phase 60hz.
Motor drives are Baldor 18H AC Vector Drives.
This upgraded configuration has developed numerous small problems with the result that the crane is not used at present. In addition, access to the operator’s cab is difficult and the cage around the cab limits visibility of objects on the floor.
