1.0 INTRODUCTION
Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is a 3,057 acre National Park Service (US Dept of The Interior) managed and operated National Monument, located in Western Nebraska. The site is twenty miles south of Harrison, Nebraska, and located on the Niobrara River. The site contains some of the oldest mammal fossils ever discovered, dating to the Miocene, approximately 20 to 16 million years ago. As well, there is a rich cultural heritage spanning both Native histories and historic pioneering ranch properties. The National Monument provides services for park visitors, educational groups and local population recreational interests, with a visitor center/education center as the primary location of visitor concentration. This facility provides year-round services. As well, the park provides housing to staff members on a year round basis, and there is a maintenance shop/yard located on the property to provide repair and preventative services.
