2.1 - Backfill Material
Backfill material shall be readily compactable excavated material free of frozen or organic material, highly plastic clay or other objectionable material and shall contain no rocks larger than 3 inches in diameter.
2.2 - Water
02224 - 30
Water shall be reasonably clean and free of injurious substances.
2.3 – Borrow Material
Borrow material shall conform to Sections 02224 – Excavation, Embankment and Backfill and 02220 – Excavation, and Backfill for Buildings/Structures. Borrow material will be available from commercial source pits.
3.1 - Excavation
02224 - 27 All suitable excavated materials shall be used in construction of embankments, slopes, and backfill.
No excavated material shall be placed in lakes or live streams.
Rocks too large to be incorporated into embankments shall be broken for incorporation into the embankment or relocated to locations approved by the Engineer for use as barrier rocks.
3.2 - Backfill
02224 - 36
General backfill shall be placed in horizontal layers not exceeding 6 inches (loose measure) and compacted. Each embankment layer shall be leveled and smoothed before compaction and placement of subsequent layers. Compaction shall be as shown in Section 3.6.
Finished surfaces shall be reasonably smooth, compacted, and shall drain without ponding.
Backfilling Adjacent to Concrete Remove all forms and clean the excavated area of all debris. Remove any standing water from excavation. Obtain approval from Engineer prior to placement of backfill. Do not backfill until concrete has been in place for a minimum of 7 days and has attained sufficient strength to withstand imposed loads.
3.3 - Embankment
Embankment shall be placed in horizontal layers not exceeding 6 inches (loose measure) and compacted.
02224 - 31 Bring all embankments to suitable elevations above grade to provide for anticipated settlement, shrinkage, and required compaction.
Embankment material shall not be dropped on any structure.
3.4 - Grading
02224 - 59
02224 - 59 All areas covered by the project including excavation and embankment areas and adjacent transition areas, shall be uniformly graded so that finished surfaces are at elevations indicated and approved by the Engineer. Slope grade away from structures a minimum of ¼-inch per foot unless otherwise indicated to provide drainage away from structures.
All areas covered by the project including excavation and embankment areas shall be final graded so that all ruts and berms are removed.
3.5 - Excess Excavated Material
All suitable excavated materials shall be used as backfill.
02220-33
All excavated materials not required or unsuitable for backfill shall be utilized on the site or removed to waste areas as directed by the Engineer.
3.6 - Compaction
Place suitable material in layers no more than 6 inches thick.
Placing individual rocks or boulders greater than 24 inches in diameter will NOT be permitted. Carefully distribute rocks and fill the voids with finer material to form a dense and compacted mass.
02224 - 3 Where material containing large amounts of rocks is used to construct embankments, make layers of sufficient thickness to accommodate the material involved. Construct a solid embankment with adequate compaction by working smaller rock and fines in with the larger rocks to fill the voids, and by operating hauling and spreading equipment uniformly over the full width of each layer as the embankment is constructed.
Ensure that the material is at moisture content suitable to obtain a mass that will not visibly deflect under the load of the hauling and spreading equipment. Material shall be compacted until visible deformation ceases or as deemed necessary by the Engineer.

02224 - 37
02224 - 61
02224 - 32
There will be no separate measurement of this item.
This work is incidental to other items in the contract and direct and separate payment will not be made.

02232 – AGGREGATE BASE COURSE
PART 1- GENERAL
1.1 – SUMMARY
A. The work of this section consists of furnishing and placing aggregate, and filler if required, on a prepared subgrade.
1.2 - SUBMITTALS
A. As specified in specification 01300 “Submittals”.
B. Two copies of certified weight tickets for each load of aggregate delivered to project site.
C. If materials are obtained from a commercial source, submit certification from the supplier certifying that aggregate base course meets the requirements of this section.
D. Submit all Material and Compaction Test results directly to Contracting Officer (CO) from testing services, with copy to Contractor
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
2.1 – AGGREGATE
A. Clean, hard, durable fragments or particles of crushed stone, crushed slag, or crushed or natural gravel. Materials that break up due to freeze-thaw or wet-dry cycling shall not be used.
B. Coarse Aggregate: ASTM D2487, percentage of wear of not more than 50.
C. Contractor shall furnish porous, free-draining granular material free of excess moisture, muck, frozen lumps, roots, sod, or other deleterious material.
D. Material, inclusive of filler, shall meet following screen analysis requirements by weight:
SIEVE DESIGNATION
PERCENT PASSING
1 ¼” inch
No. 4 No. 8 No. 30 No. 200 38-65 25-60 10-40 3-12
