Backsloping of trench walls will be allowed only upon prior written approval of the Engineer.

Remove all shoring and sheeting when construction is completed. Withdraw shoring in such a manner as to prevent trench wall from caving in while backfilling.

3.5 - Excavated Material

Pile excavated material at the side of the trench where it will provide the best protection for the work. Leave adequate space between the toe of the spoil pile and edge of trench, to prevent material from falling into the trench.

3.6 - Backfill

Before compacting backfill other than rock or sand, prepare material to a water content that will permit proper compaction by either aerating the material if it is too wet, or spraying the material with water if it is too dry. Thoroughly mix each lift before compaction to assure uniform distribution of water content. Do not compact material above pipe until there is 6 inches of cover over the pipe. There shall be no machine compaction within 6" of an electric cable or conduit. Compact each lift to the required density.

(a) Bedding and Shading Place in lifts 6 inches or less and compact with a minimum of 3 passes over the entire lift surface. Compact around pipe barrel and bells by hand tamping.

(b) Select Excavated Material and Conduit Backfill Distribute large rocks so they are individually surrounded by fine materials. Place 12-inch lifts or less and compact to at least 90% of the maximum dry density as determined by AASHTO T-99.

(d) Surface Restoration In Areas Other Than Roads All surfaces shall be restored to the required grade (usually original ground line), mounded over or smoothed off as directed, and left in a uniform and neat condition, to the satisfaction of the Contracting Officer. Surface drainage shall be diverted so that it will not follow along a trench. In areas where natural re-vegetation is designated (no planting to be done), the Contractor shall scarify all disturbed or compacted areas and right-of-ways such that the surface of the ground is loose to a depth of at least one inch.

EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL FOR UTILITIES – 02223 – 20

02665-24

3.1 - Pipe Installation

Handle and install pipe in accordance with manufacturer's Installation Guide and the following:

02665-2

Pipe Placement Place pipe so the full length (except for couplings) bears uniformly on the bedding material. Do not lay pipeline in water.

02665-25

Separation of Water and Sewer Mains A water line shall not infringe upon an area six feet on either side of a sewer line and shall not be below, at the same level as, or less than two feet above the top of the sewer line, unless extra protection is provided. Extra protection shall consist of constructing the sewer line with mechanical joint ductile iron pipe or with slip-joint ductile iron pipe if joint restraint is provided or shall consist of encasing both the water and sewer lines in at least six inches of concrete. Under no circumstances shall water line infringe upon an area within two feet of either side of or two feet below the sewer line.

PIPE FITTINGS AND SPECIALTIES – 02610 – 27

Pipe Protection Keep interior of pipeline and joining surfaces clean. Plug exposed ends of pipe at end of work shifts.

02665-68

Cutting Pipe Make all cuts square and ream. Do not use damaged pipe.

02665-79 Lubricated Joints Use only non-toxic and water-soluble lubricant.

02665-79 Pipe Alignment and Grade Where necessary to avoid existing obstacles, pipelines may be realigned slightly. Slope all lines to drain or as shown.

3.7 Foundation Drain/Subsurface Drain

Construct foundation drain as SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS

3.8 - Hydrostatic Testing

PIPE FITTINGS AND SPECIALTIES – 02610 – 28

02665-41 Perform hydrostatic test on all waterlines. Furnish all equipment necessary for tests.

Test as follows:

02665-62 Preparation Do not backfill couplings and fittings before testing. Brace couplings and fittings to prevent movement during testing. Backfill other portions of waterline prior to test so no movement can occur when the line is under pressure.

02665-26 Allow all thrust blocks in test section to cure for 48 hours (minimum) prior to testing.

Flush all pipelines.

02610-26

Furnish and install all temporary supports, blocking and

02665-plugs necessary to run the test. Remove after testing.

All air should be expelled from the pipeline during filling and again before making the pressure test.

Testing Perform test in the presence of the COR as follows:

Test each section at 150 psi (minimum) at the lowest elevation point in the section, for a period of 4 hours.

Maximum allowable overall leakage for a test section is:

02665-27 L = NDP , where

02665- 02665-33

L = Allowable leakage, gph

02665- 02665-75 N = Number of joints in test section D = Nominal diameter of pipe, inches

PIPE FITTINGS AND SPECIALTIES – 02610 – 29

P = Square root of the average test pressure, psig

02665-33

02665-29 Repair any visible leakage at joints and repeat the test.

02665- 02665-29 If overall leakage is above maximum allowable, repair the pipeline and repeat the test.

Continue this procedure until leakage is within the allowable specified.

02665- 02665-29

02665- 02665-46

3.7 - Disinfection of New Waterline

PIPE FITTINGS AND SPECIALTIES – 02610 – 29

Disinfect all newly laid pipelines after hydrostatic testing is completed in the following manner:

Disinfecting Agent Chlorine as a calcium hypochlorite, or sodium hypochlorite solution of known strength.

Disinfecting Solution Strength and Measurement Mix the chemical with the water entering the pipeline to obtain a minimum of 50 mg/l chlorine concentration. The following table can be used to calculate required chlorine based on strength product used:

02665-36

To achieve 50 mg/l (ppm) Per 1000 gallons volume to be disinfected use

02665-4 02665-70

5% chlorine bleach - 1 gal

02665- 02665-27 25% powder - 1 lb.-11 oz.

70% powder - 9.6 oz.

02610-27

Open valves as necessary to allow solution to fill and circulate throughout the entire system. Test all outlets and ends of pipeworks to ensure that the chlorine solution has reached the entire system.

Disinfection Period Retain chlorine solution in the system for a minimum of 24 hours. Test for chlorine residual at a representative number of outlets. If free chlorine residual is below 10 mg/l, repeat disinfection cycle. During the disinfection period, operate all valves and hydrants in the treated segment of pipeline to disinfect the appurtenances.

Final Flushing and Test Following disinfection, flush pipelines with potable water until the chlorine residual is no higher than the existing water supply system or one mg/l. The Engineer will collect four samples; two each at least 24 hours apart: one at the source and one near the end of the new line. An independent laboratory will conduct bacteriological tests on all samples.

02665-28

02665-76 If the initial disinfection fails to achieve potable bacteriological quality, repeat the disinfection procedure until satisfactory results are obtained.

PIPE FITTINGS AND SPECIALTIES – 02610 – 30

02665- 02665-34

PART 4 – MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

4.1 – Method of Measurement

Measurement will be made for the actual length of pipe installed, including all fittings, accessories, appurtenances, and connections to existing lines, measured along the centerline of the pipe.

Measurements will not be made until installations are complete, disinfected, pressure tested, and accepted.
