ALL CHANGES ARE MADE IN BOLD UNDERLINE

Statement of Work Salt River Take-out Ramp Improvements Tonto National Forest Tonto Basin Ranger District

Objective & Purpose:

The proposed modification of the boat ramp at the Highway 288 Salt River rafter’s take-out will make the ramp safer and more convenient for forest users derigging and packing up their gear following their whitewater rafting trip. The dirt portions of the boat ramp will be converted to a concrete slab with recessed d-rings available for boat ties.

Location:

The project is located on the Tonto Basin Ranger District of the Tonto National Forest, T3N, R14E, Section 9, and is shown on the location map. This is immediately east and just downstream of the Highway 288 Bridge. Driving to the site from Globe, take Highway 188 north 14.7 miles to the Highway 288 exit. Take Highway 288 4.4 miles, turn left onto the boat ramp road and drive 0.1 miles down to the ramp itself.

Background:

The Salt River, through the Salt River Canyon Wilderness, is a popular, nationally known Wilderness River Trip. From March 1 to May 15, the Globe Ranger District issues four randomly drawn permits a day for groups to raft through the Salt River Canyon Wilderness. This means that up to 300 river trips a year use the boat ramp just below the Highway 288 Bridge to disassemble, pack and load their gear before returning home. As most people choose to end their river trip in the morning, the ramp frequently hosts two or three trips, each with up to fifteen boats, and all of their associated gear at the same time.

Existing Conditions:

Currently, the boat ramp consists of concrete slab well above the raftable high water line with a dirt ramp down to the waterline and along the western edge of the slab. Typically the concrete slab is occupied by the first group to arrive with later groups occupying dirt portions of the ramp. During rain events, and as the spring high water drops, the dirt portions of the ramp frequently turn to mud, forcing people to carry heavy rafts and coolers through, and disassemble their gear, in slippery mud. There is currently nothing to tie a boat to at the ramp, and, because the boats are still in the current, and are untied, they do not provide a stable platform to do the work of derigging.

Required Work Items:

This project will require the contractor to widen the existing boat ramp to 30 feet as well as extend the ramp closer to water’s edge. Refer to the drawings for the exact size of the existing ramp and the expansion of the ramp. The slabs will be doweled with epoxy to the existing slab, and have turndowns on all edges. Construction will include stainless steel boat tie-off d-rings as shown in the plans.

Time Frame:

Construction is anticipated to occur the 1st of June, 2013. The water levels are naturally low this time of year. Dewatering, at the contractors expense, may be necessary if unforeseen weather events cause water levels to rise. All work shall be completed within 30 calendar days of the Notice to Proceed.

Measurement & Payment:

The accepted quantities will be paid for at the contract unit price for each item listed in the SCHEDULE OF ITEMS.
