1.1.2 – Cutting Methods—Manual Cut
a) Live Non-Sawtimber cut tree diameter is from 5.0 inches DBH to 7.9 inches DBH for Ponderosa Pine, Limber pine, Douglas-fir, Aspen, Engelmann and Blue spruce DBH. Biomass cut tree diameter is 1’ feet to 4.9” inches DBH for all species.
b) Stump height of cut trees shall be no higher than 6 inches above ground level.
c) Trees shall be completely severed from the stump at a 90 degree angle.
d) No cut tree shall be left suspended in or leaning against a leave tree or tree outside the unit boundary.
1.2 – Task: Slash Treatment Unless specified different on Unit Data Sheet, slash treatment refers to debris created from work under this contract including all designated cut trees and their tops, trunks, and branches.
Slash Treatment type by unit is specified in the Table 5.1.2 and the “Treatment of non-sawtimber, down woody debris, standing dead and biomass material” section.
-Criteria listed below will be followed for the appropriate treatment.
a) No thinning and/or logging slash shall be allowed outside the contract boundary, unless otherwise approved by the Contracting Officer.
b) Contractor shall remove all thinning and/or logging slash near the following:
1) Roads – Forest Service roads 330 and 334 shall be kept free of slash.
2) Land Survey Monuments –all slash will be piled or lopped and scattered at least 25 feet from land survey monuments.
3) Roads, Trails and Ditches- pullback 25 feet from edge of roads, trails and ditches.
c) Hand Piling – Slash created will be piled to the following:
-All piles will be constructed as compactly as possible, with heavier material placed on top.
-The maximum pile size shall be 10 feet in diameter by 8 feet in height, and minimum pile size shall be 7 feet in diameter by 5 feet in height.
-The minimum distance between a pile and residual conifer tree is 10 feet.
-Piles will be constructed no greater than 100 feet from w`here the slash was taken.
-Cut off any piece that extends 4’ feet or more from pile and return to pile.
-Piles will not be constructed within the channel of any stream, or on top of downed logs, stumps, rocks or snags. Mitigate soils from being present in the pile to the extent possible.
1) Unit 9, DWD variance of 3 feet to 12 feet in length; 3 inches diameter on the small end and 10 inches diameter on the large end will be hand piled.
2) Unit 9, standing dead with a minimum 4.5’ feet in height and no maximum; minimum 3” DBH to maximum 7.9” DBH will be felled and hand piled.
d) Lop and Scattering – Slash created will be lopped and scattered to the following:
- Thinned trees will be felled parallel to the contours of the land or perpendicular to slope position.
-The boles of thinned trees will be left whole (not bucked).
-Boles will be limbed and topped so that a minimum of 75% of the bole will be in direct contact with the soil.
-Slash will be evenly lopped and scattered across the unit.
-Slash height will be less than 18” in height on the ground.
