SECTION 02579

SEALCOAT

PART 1- GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

This item shall consist of seal coating existing asphalt surface after crack sealing is complete. This work shall be performed and paid for in accordance with this specification. The intent of this work item is to seal the existing asphalt surface with a commercially available product containing asphalt emulsion and mineral filler.

Product information shall be submitted for approval to the COR 5 days prior to application.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2 .1 SEAL MATERIAL

Emulsion shall be a quick set emulsion with polymer additive such as CQS-1 h or Resurfacer II. Mineral filler shall meet the requirements of AASHTO M 17 and be dispersed in the emulsified asphalt solution at a minimum of 2 pounds per gallon. Product shall be for temperatures between 100˚ and 30˚.

2.2 MATERIAL DILUTION

Material may be diluted up to a maximum of 20% by volume with potable water. There will be no additional added mineral allowed. If conditions warrant (high surface temperatures), misting of the road surface will be allowed. Standing water will not be allowed. If water puddles on surface application will be halted until standing water has evaporated. COR has the right to sample diluted material from Contractor’s equipment to verify dilution ratios. This will be accomplished by a residue test. If material is found to be over allowable dilution, Contractor will be required to apply an additional coat of properly diluted material.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3. 1 EQUIPMENT

Application shall be by a self-propelled purpose built seal coating equipment equipped with rubber squeegees or pressurized spray application equipment. Pressurized spray equipment shall be capable of spraying pavement sealer with sand added. Small hand brooms may be used for detail work in small, tight areas.

Equipment shall have continuous agitation or mixing capabilities to maintain homogeneous consistency of pavement sealer mixture throughout the application process.

3. 2 SITE PREPARATION

The Contractor shall clean the surface of the asphalt not more than 24 hours prior to applying sealer. Contractor may use backpack blowers, walk-behind blowers, compressors, wire brooms or any method that will completely remove any dust, dirt, vegetation, or deleterious material. Contractor shall treat oil spots with oil primer specifically designed for this purpose. It is Contractor’s responsibility to remove debris from site and dispose of said debris at Contractor’s expense. No additional payment will be made for this item.

3 .3 APPLICATION RATE

Two coats of properly diluted material. Application rate 4.5 gallons/100square foot. The second coat is not to be applied until the first coat has completely dried.

3.4 WORKMANSHIP

Material will be applied uniformly over the entire surface in such a manner that there are no ridges or uncoated areas. Material will be applied in such a manner that no material will be splashed or run onto concrete wheel stops, concrete drain pans/valley gutters, or other site features. Cutoff lines at the ends of the streets and intersections will be straight lines. Over spray or staining of any concrete surface shall be cleaned off at the expense of the Contractor.

3.5 WEATHER LIMITATION

Material will not be applied when temperatures are expected to fall below 50°F at any time in a 24 hour period, and/or rain is forecast. If sealcoat receives rain before it has cured, Contractor will re-apply material at his/her own expense with no reimbursement.
