Site Description
General
These stands are located on easterly slopes at an elevation of 1500-1800ft, and are characterized by areas of steep and/or rocky groqnd. Access to timber is from an existing landing to the north on FR 200. Aside from a few areas, the terrain is easily operated. Some evidence of harvest history is found in the northern portions of stand 2-16, believed to be part of the Hickey Brook timber sale in 1992. Harvest history of stand 3-31 is unknown.
Special Features- An old bulldozer twitch road forms the eastern boundary of stand 2-16. A plastic water line runs the length of the property line/stand boundary (2-16) to the south, leading to a camp on the Kennebec Lot inholding.
CurrenfStand Condition
Type - Stand 3-31 is typed according to CSE protocol as a Mixedwood forest type. Species present include sugar maple, yellow birch, american beech, and red spruce. Stand 2-16 is typed according to CSE protocol as a
Northern Hardwood forest type. Sugar maple, american beech, and yellow birch are all present to some degree.
Lesser amounts of red maple, paper birch, and balsam fir are found in both stands. Quality ranges from mostly
'\, moderate quality hardwoods to exceptional yellow birch and sugar maple.
Size - Pole and small sawtimber dominate with numerous large stems.
Density - The stands are currently adequately stocked, with stand reconnaissance basal areas averaging 100 sq.ft or better.
Age - Records indicate the year of origin as the mid 1900's.
Species Composition Overstory -The dominant and codominant overstories consists of primarily deciduous species represented by sugar maple, yellow birch, and american beech with lesser amounts of red maple, paper birch, red spruce, and balsam fir. Occasional eastern hemlock trees are also found to exist in both stands.
Understory -Heavy to moderate amounts of american beech, hobblebush, and striped maple dominate the understory followed by moderate to scattered amounts of sugar maple and inclusions of spruce/fir.

Harvest Rx: 210. The focus of this entry is on potential crop trees of good form. Basal area )2009 should be reduced to 70 sq.ft., removing poor form andlor quality and some saw log-sized trees to increase economic feasibility. Spacing is very important to encourage site utilization. Season of
(est.) operation is winter for stand 3-31 and fall/winter for stand 2-16.
Site Preparation for Natural Regeneration (SPNR): Natural regeneration is not the intent of this harvest entry. Increased light will enhance sugar maple understory development.

Site Description General Stands 3-36 and 2-19 are located on south easterly slopes ranging in eLevation from 1500 to 1 800ft and are characterized by areas of scattered rocklboulders. Terrain is operable with limitations due to rocky or poorly drained ground. Access is from an existing landing to the north at the end of FR 200. Harvest history is unknown.
Special Features- An old bulldozer twitch road forms the western boundary of stand 2-19. A plastic water line runs the length of the property line/stand boundary (2-19) to the south, leading to a camp on the Kennebec Lot inholding. A bird survey transect passes through the southern area of the stand 3-36 and is identified by blue & yellow ribbons and paint.
Current Stand Condition Type - These st~ds have been typed accordingly as a sugar maple - beech - yellow birch forest type. The majority of the stems are hardwood sugar maple, yellow birch and beech, with lesser amounts of red maple, paper birch and occasional and red spruce. Stand 2-19 contains pockets of spruce-fir growth on the eastern side of the stand. Quality ranges from mostly moderate quality hardwoods to exceptional sugar maple.
) Size- Large poletimber-sized trees (8-14"dia) predominate in both stands.
Density - Stands are adequately stocked at 90+ sq.ft.
Age - Database year of origin is 1905 for stand 3-36, and 1890 for stand 2-19.
Species Composition Overstory -The dominant and codominant overstory of the stand consists of primarily northern hard wood tree species. Species composition is sugar maple, yellow birch, and american beech. Red maple, balsam fir, and red spruce are present in lesser amounts.
Understory - These stands are characterized by light to moderate amounts of sugar maple and moderate amounts of american beech, ranging from 1 to 10-15' in height. Striped maple seedlings and saplings and hobblebush are present throughout less dense areas.

Year I TreatmentlMarkina Guides Harvest Rx: 153. Desired condition is to manage using an uneven-aged approach at a 20+ year harvest interval. Consider the following trees/areas for harvest: release of highest quality potential crop trees, dead and/or dying trees, relatively pure mature or overmature trees, areas prone' to
! windthrow, sparse areas where stocking is low; low quality or lesser desirable species (beech, red 2009 maple, balsam fir) of overs tory trees, and areas adjacent to potential seed trees (yellow birch).
Retain' an average residual basal area of 70 sq.ft. of potential sawlog quality trees with
(est.) representation across all size classes. Group size should be 114 to 2 acre in size; Equipment access throughout the unit should be taken into consideration, to include marking of skid trails if necessary.
Total area in groups should not exceed 17% of total stand area (12ac), stand conditions permitting, Season ofoperation is winter, Site Preparation for Natural Regeneration (SPNR): Natural regeneration is the intent of this harvest entry, Increased light will enhance establishment of northern hardwood.
