BOUNDARIES – All boundaries are marked with black and orange striped flagging and white tags. No cut exclusions, flagged with black and orange striped ribbon occur within units.
All stem densities vary from dense thickets to small openings less than one acre in size. The quoter is advised to visit the work sites to determine average cut trees per acre prior to submitting a quote. The quoter is responsible for determining the amount of work.

Species abbreviations are as follows: DF = Douglas-fir, ES = Englemann Spruce, LP = Lodgepole Pine, PP = Ponderosa Pine, AF = Sub- Alpine Fir, GF = Grand Fir, RC = Western Red Cedar, WH = Western Hemlock, WL = Western Larch, WP = Western White Pine, BC= Black Cottonwood, QA= Quaking Aspen and PB = Birch species
/ Leave trees by preference are as follows: PP, WL, DF, RC, ES, LP, AF, WH and GF. {Ignore the species WP, BC, QA and PB when spacing between leave species.}
/ Space all healthy, undamaged trees under 7.0 inches DBH (6.0 inches DBH for lodgepole pine), to designated spacing. Do not select any trees with signs of dwarf mistletoe, root rot, bark beetles or mechanical damage. Spacing can vary up to 50% of the desired distance to leave the most desirable tree and shall not materially increase or decrease the number of leave trees per acre.
/ Stump heights not to exceed 6 inches and no live branches will be attached to stump.
/ Minimum required tree height for cutting is 1 Foot.
/ Leave no cut trees hung up.
/ Lop and scatter required when slash accumulations exceed 2 feet in depth. Slash will be cut in to lengths of 5 feet or less. Slash shall be pulled back 2 feet from unit boundaries, streams, trails and 6 feet from fences.
/ No Hardwoods or brush species shall be cut.
/ Clear trees less than 7.0 inches in DBH (6.0 inches for lodgepole pine) for a 16 foot radius from all leave trees 7” to 15.9” inches DBH and for a 20 foot radius from leave trees greater than 16.0 inches DBH.
/ Within 50 feet of the centerline of a stream channel, marsh or lake, shift species preference to RC, WH, ES, AF, PP, WL, DF, LP, and GF. Do not cut or pile within 15 feet of stream channel.
/ Retain a 10 foot to 15 foot wide live vegetation screen along open roads or within the unit that disrupts viewing into unit.
/ Leave trees by preference are as follows: WL, DF, PP, RC, ES, LP, AF, WH and GF. {Ignore the species WP, BC, QA and PB when spacing between leave species.}

/ When Ponderosa (PP) is present, cut to a 20 ft X 20 ft spacing. When PP is not present, cut to a 16 ft X 16 ft spacing. Do not select any trees with signs of dwarf mistletoe, root rot, bark beetles or mechanical damage. Spacing can vary up to 50% of the desired distance to leave the most desirable tree and shall not materially increase or decrease the number of leave trees per acre.
/ Dwarf Mistletoe Control: Girdle, fell, or prune dwarf mistletoe infected overstory trees. Girdling and/or felling may only be applied to trees <21” dbh.
/ Aspen Enhancement: Cut all live conifer trees (except western larch and white pine) that are within 30 feet from the edge of an aspen stand – an aspen stand is defined as having five or more live aspen trees greater than 10 feet in height that are within 15 feet of each other.
Thin the western larch that are within 30 feet of an aspen stand to the spacing specified for the unit.
/ Retain at least two leaning live or dead trees per acre (pole sized or larger) and as many snags as practicable. If insufficient leaning trees remain, create a minimum of two per acre. Leaning trees would have a minimum DBH of 4 inches and a minimum length of 20 feet.
They should be angled between 30 and 60 degrees from vertical and each should have its top propped against another tree’s bole or leaning into another tree’s live crown if needed to provide support over time. The intent is to provide escape for young great gray owls from ground-based predators. This applies to all pre-commercial thin and small pole thinning units, where trees exceed 4” DBH.
/ Hand pile all slash 150 feet from the centerline of roads. Lop and scatter slash in the remaining areas of the unit.
/ Variable Density Thin: Cut all live lodgepole pine within 25’ of overstory western larch. Thin all other conifers to the designated spacing. Overstory trees are trees >12” dbh and they are taller than the surrounding seedlings and saplings.
/ Hand pile all slash. Piles must be located at least 6 feet from leave trees and be a minimum of 4 ft x 4 ft x 8 ft in size with waterproof paper covering to top 1/3 of pile with material placed on top to prevent loss of paper due to wind.
/ Clear all Alder and Birch species 4 feet from Western Larch leave species.
/ Contractor to layout, GPS and retain ½ to 1-acre un-thinned patches (totaling 10 percent of the unit).
/ Space all healthy, undamaged trees under 7.0 inches DBH (6.0 inches DBH for lodgepole pine), to designated spacing. Do not select any trees with signs of dwarf mistletoe, root rot, bark beetles or mechanical damage. Spacing can vary up to 25% of the desired distance to leave the most desirable tree and shall not materially increase or decrease the number of leave trees per acre.
