About this file
This document outlines the detailed specifications for a federal herbicide application contract opportunity with the Bureau of Land Management Nevada Region. The contract involves treating approximately 1,185 acres in Sheep Creek, Nevada for various noxious weed species from June 3rd to July 31st using a terrestrial tank mix of picloram, metsulfuron methyl, and dye or an aquatic mix of 2,4-D, surfactant, and dye. The contractor must have sufficient equipment and a qualified work crew to complete mixing and application. Rates of chemical application are specified. The project area involves hilly terrain from 5,000 to 6,700 feet in elevation with sparse vegetation and intermittent streams requiring buffering of non-aquatic herbicides.

DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS
HERBICIDE APPLICATION
2024 Sheep Creek Herbicide Weed Treatment
1. Target Species: Scotch thistle, Perennial pepperweed, hoary cress, Russian knapweed Additional noxious weed species found within the designated contract boundary, and susceptible to chemical intended for use, will also be treated.
2. Treatment Area: 1185 acres including up to approximately 22 acres of streams/have the potential for water present and will require the use of both aquatic herbicide and adjuvant. Treatment areas vary in the amount of noxious weeds that are within the polygon. Actual weed treatments will be less than that of the treatment area itself.
3. Location of Work Site: Project area is located approximately 25 miles north-northeast of Battle Mountain, Nevada in the Sheep Creek Mountains. The legal description of the treatment area is: T35N R45E, T35N R46E, T34N R45E and T35N R45E. See Attached Location Maps.
Access to Work Site: Public or private access roads damaged by the Contractor shall be restored, at the Contractor’s expense, to the same condition they were in at the commencement of work.
4. Approximate Performance Period: Period of performance is estimated and timing of treatments will need to be flexible in order to maximize the effects on target weed species. The anticipated treatment window for this project is June 3rd to July 31st and the Contractor must be available during that time period.
5. Requirements of Equipment to be supplied by the Contractor: Sufficient to meet specifications of the contract.
6. Loading Facilities: Use of any loading area on federal or private land, shall be arranged by and at the discretion and risk of the contractor.
7. Work Crew Requirements: Work crew for handling and mixing of chemical and loading equipment shall be furnished by the Contractor.
8. Requirements of Chemical to be supplied by the Contractor: Herbicide, surfactant, and dye shall be used and selected from the attached lists of Approved Herbicide Formulations and Approved Adjuvants for use on BLM land. Colorant/dye must be visible for 3 days after application.
9. Kind of Chemical: Picloram + Metsulfuron methyl + Dye AND Aquatic 2,4-D + Aquatic Surfactant + Dye
Contractor must provide a list of chemicals intended for use with their bid package.
10. Rate of Application:
· Terrestrial Tank Mix: Picloram (Tordon 22k or equivalent) at 16 ounces/acre (0.25 lb. ae/acre) + Metsulfuron methyl (Escort, MSM60, or equivalent) at 1 ounces/acre (0.0375lb AI/acre) + Surfactant (Rate as specified on label and compatible with herbicide) + Dye
· Aquatic Mix: Aquatically approved 2,4-D (Alligare 2,4-D or equivalent) at 64 ounces/acre (1.9 lb. ae/acre) + Aquatically approved surfactant (Rate as specified on label and compatible with herbicide) + Dye.
11. Remarks and Other Requirements: Apply the spray solution in properly maintained and calibrated equipment capable of delivering the desired volume. Controlling drift is the responsibility of the Applicator.
The Sheep Creek weed herbicide treatment area consists of hills, mountain slopes, fan remnants, and several drainages which hold intermittent flowing streams. Terrain is overall very hilly and steep, with mountain slopes ranging from 15-60%. Soil type is a clay loam that varies from shallow to moderately drained. Elevation ranges from 5000 to 6700 feet. Vegetation consists of sparse patches of Wyoming Sagebrush, mixed perennial bunchgrasses, and native forbs. Annual invasive grasses such as cheatgrass and several annual invasive mustards are the dominate vegetation for much of the project area. A single two track road runs through the middle of the project area but other than that access is limited. More remote and steep areas will necessitate backpack spraying. Several drainages which hold intermittent flowing streams are present throughout the project area. If water is present during the time of application, the buffers for non-aquatically formulated herbicides will be maintained at 10 feet for application by handgun and 25 feet for application with boom equipment. Spraying up to the water’s edge (within the buffer) will require use of aquatic formulated herbicide and surfactant.
